Unnecessary hype
by Veera S on Jan 23, 2009 03:51 AM  | Hide replies

Oscar awards are given in US for English Films..and again nothing can be said on the way they are chosen..

As usual, too much type is being given to an insignificant and mediocre film...

WIll there be great hype and celebration in US if any American is honoured in India??

It is a proud occasion that Slumdog got 10 Oscar nominations. But I think the credit solely goes the director and cinematographer of this film who chalked out the blueprint of this film. The performance of bollywood actors Anil Kapoor,Irfan who are not playing the central character are just like any other bollywood movie.

The most important part is since this movie has a worldwide viewership and it includes people who has little knowledge about India who tend to inculcate a filthy(unhygenic) feeling about the country. They belive the whole country is like a slum far from being a superpower.

Although the cinematography and direction in slumdog are beyond par but I believe Lagaan being a commercial bollywood movie carried a much better theme than this. But it couldn't score anything in Oscars.

Best Cinematography (Anthony Dod Mantle) and Best Film Editing (Chris Dickens)

In regards to review.. I was little annoyed to see how they portray the SLUMS. I think it's too much graphic. I see you can get millionare by beeing smart way or quick way and also their results in future.
Every actor (child to adult) did justice to their character.

Slum dog ...Award or Insult?
by Farhan rizvi on Jan 23, 2009 02:15 AM  | Hide replies

Indians will be happy for seeing SDM getting 10 nominations for Oscar. The dark side is as some of my friends asked is India is that poor and backward? Such conditions are always exploited by Westerners. This is why Satyajit Ray champion of showing India's poverty got life time Oscar award. Well Jack Indian I appreciate your poverty, slums you snake charmers that is what India referred as Land of Snake charmers. The hidden message by making this movie and also appreciating by the West is in their view, though India has taken over Jaguar, Corus etc or even reach the moon. Still you are the one whom we ruled and for us your image is like what we showed in Slumdog..
The positive of this which India can take is take a big political manifesto for eradication of poverty and slums if they really want to be in the league of Developed Nations they have to eradicate this like polio from the society.

Obviously India 80% population is poor.whats wrong in that. If you and your friends have so much problem accepting the reality, why not watch Karan Johar, Aditya chopra's movie and have a feel good factor. Its like you see Kamasutra and say every Indian does that.

First see the movie and then discuss. As it said mental slavery ....old habits diehard who think made in USA or UK is gold standard. Slumdog the movie was not made by an Indian director but one who are still consider Indians the same old slave, first come and live with any Britisher.Do you think All 80% who according to you lives in poverty lives the same way as it was shown in the movies. Do you bring your own household junk in drawing room. So you are of the opinion to show negatives. In USA too there is lot of poverty, how many movies you saw where they show their demerits? Free your self from mental slavery my dear Indy.

I have already seen the movie 2 months back and liked the intense pace of the movie. As you depict mental slavery, do remember that the Computer on which you are putting your FALSE pride is IMPORTED from USA, so you are an mental slave too! I can talk about the discoveries by America and you have to s$%t on your pants! Anyways I don't think you have travelled by Railways or buses and noticed how many people go to s%^T in morning. I hope you have not even seen Dharavi!!USA is filled with movies on Blacks are supposed to be poor but I guess you have not even visited any developed country to compare too!!

the movie is made from a book written by "Q and A" written by famous Indian Author "Mr. Vikas Swarup". So dont complain on people who made the movie. More over the movie was started by " Loveleen Tandan" as director who got replaced. Stop wyning and accept the reality guys.

I had great expectations about this movie and it totally disappointed me.
This is a propaganda movie , which is trying to sell poverty to world. I won't be surprised if it also has an Anti-hindu agenda Hidden in it.The Muslims are shown here as poor victims from the followers of Lord RAM, Look how they have depicted Lord RAM ( Instead of a calm defender of Justice/Weak , he is depicted as an angry young boy with an evil looking face).Muslims are the bloody fanatic killers in every part of the world ,Yet they are shown as inocent victims. They have almost wiped out all other groups/religions from Afganistan, Pakistan, Jammu and Kashmir. This movie is the Islamic underworld propaganda Machine at its best. Unfortunate part is they make use of Ignorant Indians in their big game, ( Remember Dawood used Poor Hindus to park cars loaded with explosives for the 1993 mumbai bomb blasts)Every city in the world has GOOD BAD and UGLY. Mumbai is no exception. To make a movie on the ugly does not make it any better. I my opinion, the Key thing that makes a movie better than others is a unique story line.. This movie totally lacks it. This movie does not deserve any nominations / awards.

you think about Muslim while you eat, drink, sleep, in the bathroom, while queuing for bus. Nice buddy, looks like you will become one soon. Any way don't bother yourself too much. Look what's happening in Belgaum. Karnataka is going to burn soon on this issue. cheers.

by indian on Jan 23, 2009 01:38 AM  | Hide replies

There are several posts on this forum which raise question about why slums have been exploited in the movie.

However, the goras have proved themselves as jokers because this movie proves that SLUMS in India are worth MILLIONS as compared to the RICH and AFFLUENT Banks and US Organisations which are on the brink of bankruptcy.

Just wonder if our SLUMS are worth MILLIONS, then how much an average middle class Indian can achieve :)

Goras gave oscars to this movie to project India as a poor nation, but I can assure you that it will hit them back like a boomerang in the next few months if this movie receives oscars.
