Why do we have to ape the West in whatever we do ?
by Kamala Sridhar on Jan 23, 2009 05:35 AM  | Hide replies

USA has a Hollywood we have a Bollywood, they have a Silicon Valley we want to call Bangalore a Silicon Alley, We want to call Nariman Point the Manhattan. Why do we want to win Oscars ? Why cant we think original.

Grow Up , India ! Get out of this USA - West fixation. Let us be Great on our own terms.

Jai Hind !

Great ..!!! I completely agree with you..!! Why we are always comparing ourselves to Western world..We are living in different country altogether which has many faces and really difficult to understand..!! We should have our own standards...Ultimately Indian quality should be superior then export quality..

First we have to start thinking that we are superior than anybody else and once we do that the creativity will follow. Currently we think we have no brain and the westerners are supreme. Well that is the whole problem. On the other hand, western world use our brain to creativity and sell it to all saying that its their original. The movies once again tagged the whole country with Slumdog. The movie can not be talked in good taste. And people who are trying to justify it are looking at India just like a Slum country. I hope someday we will start living with dignity and respect. Simultaneously start fixing our system, people, quality of life and challenge the show the world our muscles. But that just seem a dream right now.

It has always been a trend that if you show India's poverty in movies, you are bound to get noticed by the western media and get awards from the west. I am not surprised.

Certain people in Britain are still 'fixated' with India.

I have been to London several times, and the poverty in London is worse than India.

Most white countries have their own share of poor, homeless and druggies. Yet they are so obsessed with India and the poverty. Most of the documentaries shown abroad deal with India's dirty streets, street vendors, slums, stray dogs...

Very funny. Why would any Indian give a damn to Oscar-Toscar. Are they any different than our local awards. Silly people start believing in you. You are much better and belong 5000 years old civilization. They are just the new dogs in the street. Why care about them?!!!!

rediff please stop this BS

Oscars is an event organized by holyywood. Why do we consider it as a benchmark for ourselves ? We could have our own film industry award. We Indians will never get out of this 'superior west' mentality. We deserve our indignation at the hand of westerners.

An easy way to get Oscar is depiction of gross violation of human rights, supression of women, mass rapes, injustice, exploitation of poor, depiction of extreme poverty.

Ever heared a comedy winning Oscars ? So it seems OScars support only a particular genre of movies. So why so much hype about Oscars ?

i agree with most of the comments in here!!

this movie is over hyped for nothing, i honestly feel rahman is a great musicia, but he has a better jobs in recent hits like ghajini and jodha akbar, he shoudl be getting oscars for those movies, not for slumdog,

well after all slumdog is a hollywood picture eh?

we as an indian should not think oscors as our bench marks as it is biased!!

India number 1
by Jai Bharath on Jan 23, 2009 04:06 AM  | Hide replies

It is sad that the west exploits India. India is number 1 in Software. The top software companies are in India. The best brains are in India. In culture and values we are number 1 again.
Look at the nice Bollywood movies where everything nice about India is shown in songs shot in nice places. Instead this movie shows slums which are not in INDIA. Ask Amitabh, Hrithik and Shahrukh...India is number 1. Chak de India!!!

i didnt say those who r poor like slums...people who are offended by this movies are those who are having very good life.. who goes in car watch only sharukh khan movies..stupid salman khan movies..
they want to hide these slum people from the world..they dont want them to grow...if they all get equal education then all these selfish high class Hindus have to go jobless...and Indians in America who become americans in 2 days after they land here are offended because their american friends see what is India..why should we hide...India is growing I agree but only the rich are getting richer..why not the world see what is 70% of India all about...even though we are not doing anything why not a foreigner do something after watching this movie..may be this movie is good for that..
