Definition of a Hindu

a. The word %u2018Hindu%u2019 has geographical significance and was used originally to refer to those people who lived beyond the river Sindhu or the region watered by the river Indus.

b. Historians say that it was first used by the Persians who came to India through the North Western passes of the Himalayas. The word %u2018Hindu%u2019 was also used by the Arabs.

c. This word %u2018Hindu%u2019 is nowhere mentioned in Indian Literature or Hindu Scriptures before the advent of Muslims to India, according to the Encyclopedia of Religions and Ethics (6:690)

d. Jawaharlal Nehru, in his book %u2018Discovery of India%u2019, writes on pg. 74-75, that the earliest reference to the word %u2018Hindu%u2019 can be traced to a tantrik of the 8th Century C.E., where it means a people and not a follower of a particular religion. The use of the word %u2018Hindu%u2019 in connection with a particular religion is of late occurrence.

Bollywood promotes Islamic jihad
by deepak on Apr 07, 2008 08:57 PM

Bollywood uses heavy Urdu in all its movies...most movies make Islamic references and Islamic songs under the guise of Sufi rock...Bollywood terrorist movie themes are always excuses of victimized the terrorist was..if there is any reason to ban TV serials it should be for its insipid tastelessness...India soaps are horrible with conspiracies, family feuds, meanness, plots to kill and murder, adultery etc...cant blame the Afghans on this.

Why do you even start a thread like this - do u puposefully like the idea of people spreading hatred amongst hindu/muslims ?

I was going through the discussion board and found muslims commenting on the so-called superiority of Islam and defaming Hinduism - yet those messages are still on the board !

However when I point out serious flaws in their prophet and Islam, it gets deleted ?

I dont enjoy making comments against Islam and have many dear muslim friends - but its Rediff's unevenhandedeness which makes me come out with the truth

So do not start such forums again ...
BTW, what the hell would u achieve by knowinh people's opinion on whether serials spread Hinduism or not ??
Any meaningful outcome from this ??

I agree with you, whenever some one points out faul in ISLAM muslims always tries to show faults in other relegions. Muslims always forgets, no other relegion says its direct from GOD and there book is directly from GOD. So if ISLAM is directly from god it should be flawless. I know in my responce of this thread muslims will say Christianity also says above things but again they will forget Christinity never claims that they are superior relegion instead christinty shows a path. I am not taking about Hindunism becuase Hindu concept of god is totally different.

Definition of Hinduism

a. Hinduism has been derived from the word Hindu. According to the New Encyclopedia Britannica 20:581, Hinduism was a name given in English language in the Nineteenth Century by the English people to the multiplicity of the beliefs and faiths of the people of the Indus land. The British writers in 1830 gave the word Hinduism to be used as the common name for all the beliefs of the people of India excluding the Muslims and converted Christians.

According to the Hindu Scholars, Hinduism is a misnomer and the religion %u2018Hinduism%u2019 should be either referred to as %u2018Sanatana Dharma%u2019, which means eternal religion, or as Vedic Dharma, meaning religion of the Vedas. According to Swami Vivekananda, the followers of this religion are referred to as Vendantists.

dont fight with names now...Hinduism is an universally accepted name, and the third major religion in the world...Hindus are not to be related to India alone today, but is a globally practised religious system which covers people of all ethnic groups and not Indians alone...indeed people in Bali thru Trinidad have no connection to India at all.

Do TV serials promote the Hindu way of life?
by Nirpinder Singh on Apr 07, 2008 08:52 PM

Yes they do! Much as we use religious symbolism in many aspects of our daily lives the serials too revolve around Pujas temples religious symbols etc. Since we are a diverse society why not make the serials more representatives of our general populace? That is there should be actors belonging to all caste and social groups in all serials. If we are able to promote social integration with TV serials that are avidly watched by some people a lot of good will have been achieved.

TV serials

Yes. TV serials are products. If you dont like a product you dont buy next time. No govt bans a product unless they feel it is harmful to its citizens to allow it to be in the marketplace. It is in this context you decide the govt in afagn is secular or democratic? What are waiting fo?

Whose double standards ?
by Your Nemesis on Apr 07, 2008 08:45 PM  | Hide replies

Somebody said it. Hindi serials are produced for Hindi speaking, North Indian population. So, it is not even a news when some other region/religion/nation/community gets intimidated by what is shown.

For over a decade now, American (read western) culture (or the lack of it) has been invading our living rooms, and 'spoiling' our kids. No Indian govt have made any move to ban them. (Except for a brief censor gimmic by BJP's Sushma Swaraj on FTV. After Sushma took a few crores, FTV started airing nude catwalks the very weekend)
Because, traditionally we Indians feel the American 'liberal' way of life is more fashionable and better than the Indian 'conservative' way of Life. Even if our politicians feel that Western stray life is spreading in India, they would not ban any of the channels, for they are too corrupt to think of saving the country's rich culture and tradition. Even those hardline hindutva politicians, and organizations, which preach Indian way of life, don't stop their kids from getting American education, speaking Hinglish, wearing torn jeans, and having girlfriends.

In this respect, I appreciate the Afghani govt., atleast for now. Irrespective of how we feel about their culture & religion, they are doing what they think is right for them. But, it all comes down to business. So, no good business would like to be shut out of a market. They will always try to sneak in any way. I won't be surprised if Indian TV channels start producing TV serials centering aro

I dont think so.For a soap show to be successfull it is very importent to immitate real life events.Soap shows made for indian people are of corse going to be more hindu flavoured as hindu's are majority in india. This happens in every country,Soap show in US show christmass, thanks giving, good friday and eastersunday.Art and culture are interwind things one can not separate them. Finally Afganis have chossen to watch indian channels ,they are not been forced. If Afgan Govt is banning it then I think they are providing a new ground for islamic fundamentalist idology. To day they banned indian channels tommorrow they can make smae excuse to ban several other things. This is not a matter of channel,it is matter of principles.
