its controversy but reality is better then hypocrisy and inferiority complex
by usman khawaja on Jan 23, 2007 05:37 AM  | Hide replies

well always be brown not white its a natural law , we can be polite to each other but by wearing western cloths abd talking their lingo dont start to assume you are integrated , this is the mistake a lot of indians make to their ultimate disappointment , serves them right as it shows they suffer from inferiority complex , shilpa should now be more indian in the show then she was before as to prove the point we are just as good as we are

Makes me think you're the one who's suffering from inferiority complex buddy! I've lived abroad for over 4 years now, and NEVER ONCE have I thought of myself to be inferior to anyone. If anything, I've found that people here are far less educated than their counterparts in India. And u know something else ? It shows; that's where their pig-headedness and boorishness stems from. IGNORANCE!

It is surprising Brit Indians hang on to Shilpa for pride. It is show business. We Indians never change. Can someone recite the great contemporary leaders of India whom the world envy?

Asokan,

I am not surprised at your comment it never fails that an indian will let down another always so did you, surprising never happens with the French Germans Poles Swedes Scots or the English or the Welsh , no matter what class actress she is ( tells me about the commonway intellect really among us "Brownies" or Brown Sahibs of India) no body has a right to humiliate another person due to class creed or nationality , I wonder what is your experience yet , the sad fact is that we are so quick to put ourselves down that it is no wonder how we ended up enslaved for 300 years and beyond mentally.....please have the guts to open eyes and do the right thing not all is done for money even if it is then as well it murks the water more than you can think of this is an insult on the babse of race incidentally your skin color matches that of shilpa shetty and the abuse was at her skin color and racial origin which is wrong and shall not be tolerated in a civil society.....let me know what your benevolence deciphers .....

We should be proud of every single Indian performing well
by Priya Jay on Jan 23, 2007 03:07 AM  | Hide replies

Good article. I am in London right now. Yeah.. I have been watching BB since last week though I am not a fan of BB or TV shows. Surely, Shilpa with her poise and dignity without retaliation, has done good to the image of Indians as wellcultured and wellbehaved ! Well done, Shilpa! It is the same way how Indians here react to some uncultured brits(not all of the brits are so!).
It is sad that people in India dont want to take pride in the way NRIs do or when a Indian goes and performs well abroad!
WHich is Pride for India? Just staying inside the country and passing uncultured comments in daily life, screaming at eachother, giving bribes doesnt make India proud.
So, working for country and making it proud can be from inside and outside s well! Afterall, the whole world is looking at India only due to IT people, business and medical professionals go to heights abroad! Growup, Indians...., we need to be proud of evertyhting that each and every single individual brings home the fame/money/pride/goodness to homeland from wherever we are..! We should lose the jealousy and rivalry amongst us, when somebody earns well alongwith fame! Thatr will do good!
As we are living in a Small World..GLOBAL village!

Priya...

What made u to think Shilpa made us proud???Ofcourse,I am also NRI.Do u think just staying abroad and writing/speaking some english will make India proud???I am not saying that Racism is not there. But Since she doesn't have any other work/movies,What ever Shilpa does is for her to mull over and to get the publicity for her career.participating in some shows outside the country is not the only way to make India proud!!!

Not every body in India is passing uncultured comments, being an Indian one shuldn't use the word uncultured when talking abt fellow Indians...If u r truely an Indian then change ur opinion on Indians...

dude!probably priya didn't mean or address to all the indians when she said "ulcultured".Being an Indian doesnt mean u shud take anything from the fellow Indian and never reveal the other's trueself.
Everyone does the work for him/her self. When it is universally acclaimed,it needs to be appreciated.I wonder why people are getting offended for appreciating the fellow Indian(here it is Shilpa).

have you watched the show? Her versatile nature, her intelligence and her attitude and dignity have been highlighted and we know Shilpa Shetty is worth much more than people like Aishwarya Rai and Rani Mukherjee...she is a very well brought up lady and is extremely dignified...and who said she is out of movies? She is the most underrated actress in India

Fantastic! I agree with you 100%. She has not made us proud at all, in fact she let us down. She denied all charges of racism whilst we all know this was untrue! How can she be ok with the fact that someone calles us a PAKI and laughs at us and we all should just take it in and be silent like she is now, Forget that - not me! She has been bought out by the media to act like this, shame on her

Good message, Priya. The essence of the article is that whatever Shilpa did whether she did for herself or whatever motive she had, she was subjected to humiliation by her peers in the Show. On that front, on a global level, she was viewed as an Indian first and as such her demeanor (inspite of the abuse) makes one to be proud.

Just want to comment on this section
"It is sad that people in India dont want to take pride in the way NRIs do or when a Indian goes and performs well abroad!
WHich is Pride for India? Just staying inside the country and passing uncultured comments in daily life, screaming at eachother, giving bribes doesnt make India proud."

I am working in UK and really don't take any pride in what most of the NRI doing. Most of them don't give a toss about India. I am proud of people like Narayan Murthy or APJ Abdul kalam Ajad or other lot of not so famous people who are working hard to make india better country.
I think 70% os indian are working hard to make it a developed nation but 30% want to live on others labour( like most of the politician) and don't care about development of country.
So please don't make generic comments about indian if you don;t know about Indian!

Yeh Parveen, how is that? I do not get it. She was ok when she was in BB house but as soon she came out of BB house she changed so much, racism is ok to her? Nothing has been done about it, makes me feel crap to live here in UK, like anyone can say anything to us and we all will act like a silent Shilpa? I don't think so. She is a weak girl, hope people see this.

Rasna Arora
well written article
by Rasna Arora on Jan 23, 2007 01:13 AM

If someone thinks that by being 'paid' by a company to be in a serial/show it gives people the right to act racially intolerant, they need to rethink what they are as human beings... when someone is being wronged in front of u-irrespective of race/religion, etc - if u as a human being choose to ignore it and let it go on-u are as much a part of it as the person doing the act. It takes courage to side with the underdog and stand up for what's right... Im glad this issue blew up as much n im glad Shilpa kept her composure n dealt with it the way she did, in the end it is she who comes out a stronger n better person. n to all those who think hurting someone for their color or their 'pronunciation' of certain words is acceptable and 'funny'-which happens every single day when u are an NRI in a foreign country, by the way... think again, cause in the end it is u who comes out as the loser and the close-minded dimwit!
And for Indians living in India, stop thinking of NRIs as something to be loathed-which is what has become commonplace for no reason! an indian is proud to be an indian wherever they might be and India is always their home, even if they dont live there anymore for whatever circumstances! For God's sake, people!!!! wake up and be human beings FOR ONCE!!!!

Talk about making proud
by Rohit S on Jan 23, 2007 12:52 AM  | Hide replies

ISRO launching and recovering the capsule does make me proud. But Shilpa doing her job, making money for herself (I dont think even the money she makes there will count towards the Indian Income Tax). Why are we so bothered about all this. Moreover, whatever happened will now give people more choice of words to insult Indians outside India. If she went to England to get a good name for India, then fine. After 50 years of independence we are still insulted, it got her some sympathy and much money. Thats all happened. Rediff should get better articles and I hope the author understands what he wrote.

Well said Rohit! In India, educators, scientists, researchers, professors (even IIT professors) are poorly paid. Sometimes it happens that some 4th class govt. employ earns much better by bribes. India was suffering before economic refers, currently it is stinking because of steep economic gradients. people become more materialistic, and city roads are flooded with people who flee villages. India does not have a plan for its need. We are nobody in this world, just mimicking the western life thinly spread over the world by colonization. We should think about our needs and a system that can grow stendily and heathly over time but not by steriods (dollar in flow). Where is our identity in this world? No identity is no pride. Rediff should focus more on life shit in India. Perhaps it is time for us to think India's future and a possible mechanism right away!
