this is absoltely rediculous because she has gone their to earn some money . Nothing more than that.We should waste our time in such absurd things. In India there are lot of basis problems and we should try to solve them first.

That's mean!! why should someone live under someoneelse feet? You have to understand that Indian IT is due to US and EU's mecry (of course they saw good deal). Can Indians make their fighter planes? Can Indians have their own passernger planes? Can Indians make thrir own garmet machinery? Can Indians make their own railway platforms, trains and busstands and road sides without beggers? I hear hottible road conditions, garbage piles and outraged corruption. You go no where near Superpower. Hope you are not the lead for this Superpower Project!

Shipa issue
by Ash Pat on Jan 23, 2007 08:34 AM

The article lacks proportion and perspective. Its easy to make sweeping generalisations. Really to make grandiose comments on Brit society based on a trashy serial like Big Bro is oversimplifying.Racism yes but Shilpa being the role model and how she held on her own against 'racism' is all crap. This is a controlled envmt - what Shipa faced wasnt even close to what common Asian Brits face everyday.Shipa had a choice and shes getting paid for it.
Secondly who r we as Indians to talk abt being 'racisit'. Arent we all? Take a look ard our class ridden society and the answer is clear! So stop over simplifying based on trailer trash like Goody and Big Bro...more intelligent articles please!

I am a racist too
by on Jan 23, 2007 08:10 AM  | Hide replies

I'm an Indian..i dont live in india.. i moved to US few years ago cuz i get paid more here. I 've been living here for many years but i still didn%u2019t develop any love for this country or for the people here. Concerning race yeah ...i'm a racist too.... i cant stop hating the whites cuz i think they all are colonists, also they put me through mild inferiority complex. I usually dont hangout with blacks and i lift my car windows up and lock my doors if i see one on the street. i never liked asians and god only knows what i think about sushi. And mexicans never cared to smile at them either even though they serve me food everyday. My kids are proper american citizens I timed my wife%u2019s deliver such that she will only deliver on US soil. I don%u2019t trust doctors back home. But i dont think i will teach my kids anything about patriotism. I love my India even though i never helped any Indian. I cant stand anyone saying it's poor cuz it hurts my ego. I know there are slums and poverty everywhere but i love to live in denial. cuz my love is not that sincere. I hate self criticism. I never cared for those lower caste people either. I think we should control them otherwise You never know one day may be we will see a lower caste purohit(pundit) can you believe that :-) anyway the important thing is i think i dont care if i'm a racist but if i see another racist i get enraged. and the vocabulary of my rage includes racist rants to burning effigies. so here goes one for you Jade ....

I look for a toilet then I find a railway station nearby, ok, I go there it stinks, I don't feel like doing it. Get out by street side, look up and down, left and right, and finish my job!! Great! one american saw this he spit on me the I got raged.....goes like this...I blamed Indira Gandhi..:))

This is one of the most bizzare messages I have ever read. I do not know whether to admire your honesty or to be disgusted with your views. In the end, in fact, I am quite amused to go through your message. Thanks for it, and all the best to you. I wonder though, if you still have an Indian Passport!

To all those serious minded morons who take objection to everything that is Bollywood; at least write properly before commenting on the actors' stupidity, etc. Have you heard Shilpa talk? Shahrukh, Amitabh, Urmila? These are extremely cogent and articulate individuals, not to mention well-read. You two-bit morons, doing some faaltu programming think you are superior to everyone? Get a life. If you can't watch movies, don't. But at least don't impose on us who like it and consider part of our lives.

What Crap that India is an IT powerhouse
by on Jan 23, 2007 07:30 AM  | Hide replies

India's IT outsourcing is 2.2billion,
Israel 3.6billion
Canada 3.8billion
Ireland...whopping 8.6billion.

With 1 billion people, we think we are a powerhouse. Furthermore, we see lots of indians doing well in the US, but thats because we have a large population. Look at any great university in the US (not the crap ones but the great ones), you will find that the Chinese and South Koreans outnumber the Indians by a large number. This is despite it being more difficult for Chinese to get visa to the US and of course, the language difficulty.

People in neighboring countries (except Pakistan) look down on us. All the Sinhala people I know look down on India. Their GDP (Sri Lanka's GDP per capita) is about 1.5x India's despite having a war that overshadows the whole country.

Even countries in Africa like Botswana, Namibia, South Africa overshadow our GDP per capita.

We are not known for our hospitality in the western world. In fact, most people think that India is a hegomon.

We have come a long way in improving our country but we have a big head for nothing. We need to improve our status and our economy and we need to work on this. Stop arguing and lets make India better.

Dear Nita, the above friend has given you a value added knowledge and if you dont understand the bit of it then please keep your mouth shut..It shows he has good knowledge on the growth status in India and instead of encouraging him and concentrating on that.. we are wasting our energy reading and commenting on crap topics and publicity stunts created by media for an actress.. what a pathetic condition..
And about racism insident there has been many such insident happening to fellow Indians in UK.. what about them.. The media is least bothered.. "Shilpa made us Proud" -- what a misleading and crap headline

Dear Ajith,

Your "above friend" obviously likes keeping his head burried in sand. And due to easily available cynical Indians, finds it easy to spread incorrect information. India's IT outsourcing revenue for 2006 was $23.6 billion. Before you start delving into value added knowledge, please read topic below:

http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9000877

Nita, well said but to add to it, I would say GDP lessons are grossly outdated also and way off the mark :).

Shilpa has done us proud !!!
by Augustine Prabhu G on Jan 23, 2007 06:54 AM  | Hide replies

First best joke of 2007!
Please do not insult India by writing such stupid articles. Write about racism as a subject if you want - not Shilpa, India's pride, her maturity, stupidy etc. When you publish an article in internet about a nation, think twice if you are making the greater population proud. Do not demean India and Indians' standard. If you are too inclined towards Shilpa, write a personal letter to her.
A few examples on the class of India where you can feel proud about being Indian (women).
1. Kalpana Chawla
2. Sunita Williams
3. Chitra Bharucha etc. Sorry !!!

Well said prabhu...what nonsense people are talking about shilpa..She is a beauty queen who advertises vodka !! What great achievement she has done ? I would atleast appreciate if she would have won some beauty contest (by any chance). Achievement is a word with lot of work behind it..Mini skirts, Bikini dresses, Advertisements for alcohol or Coming in the headlines doesnt make somebody an achiever..

Prabhu, How many articles have you written about Late Kalpana Chawla, Ms Sunita williams and MS Chitra Barucha. Probably your wavelength is different. For whatever reasons Shilpa took part in the serial and whatever prize mooney she has pocketed, is irrelavant. The way she has handled herself in such an uncivilised environment, she did it with style, dignity and elegence.

I wonder whether you have said or written the same what you said had Shilpa behaved in the way Jade, Jo and Danielle did?

Dont just criticise, learn to appreciate.

Crapy Title
by Madhu s on Jan 23, 2007 06:54 AM  | Hide replies

I don't have time to read about movie stars. The title is a Crap. What is to be proud about Shipa. She is an actress and made money from the show. She is an Indian and had an argument with another lady there. Seems like this lady said something and the other lady (Goody or Guddy, though she looks like a mixed race) said Dog. Dog is such a nice and faithful animal, what an insult to the entire DOG race!! Had Dogs understand human language and can browse internet (rediffonline) I bet they would go on protest. Well, nice of the Brit, it is easy to make mistakes (if). It is not easy to confess mistakes and apolozige. Goody lost money and Shilpa and Ch-4 made money. What is for us to feel PROUD (strach my HEAD :)))!!!!! MEoW...MeoW...MEOW....You CATS.

Good article, well done Shilpa
by sandeep on Jan 23, 2007 06:47 AM  | Hide replies

I think this is a well written article. Shilpa has done a good job no doubt.
I reside in US so could not watch all the serials but did see some snippets on web. I was concerned at the way Jade and company were treating Shilpa but it was clear, this was a case of class v/s. crass. She hung on and still came back with dignity was awesome even though I would have loved something more coming from Shilpa(I am a bit bigger fan of Bose/Bhagat singh etc than Mahatma Gandhi :) ) but in civilized society, her approach should have worked very well and so it did. Jade booted out with such huge margins proves it convincingly.
Shilpa did present a cultured face of India and such things have a positive bearing on image people have of India.
There is much more awareness of India now internationally than when I had transferred 9 yrs back when very few here knew much about India(positive anyways). I think Indians did quite well in high-tech and India is recognized as an emerging powerhouse and I have had people from other countries tell me recently that they wish their homelands could also do as well.
Such positive exposure(read bbc also) which Shilpa seems to have got in UK and other places, would further cause of outsourcing(already big) to India to some extent.
With some good leaders and a bit of luck this should be India's century and it is about time too.
Go India, go Indians..

I concur with Priya and Sandeep. However, none of us can actually say with pride that Indians are also not racists. The other day, somebody posted on rediff saying how dare they insult and belittle a cultured "brahmin" girl like Shilpa ? Excuse me, but what exactly is that supposed to mean ? That its cardinal sin to abuse a brahmin and that other castes are expendable ? Let's look behind our own backyards ladies and gents, because we have specimens mouthing off such boorish comments right here in India itself.
