Money hungry politicians and profs
by alagu achari on Sep 24, 2009 10:35 PM

Average meal per day for a person in India is Rs.2. IITians asking for luxury. In universities and colleges, there is no facility like that of IITs. It is not the merit of them which makes it. It is the common Taxman money. Do not extract more from Indian citizens in the name of IIT and IISc. Just like politicians who think they are working hard for the nation, and need to stay in 5 star hotel... same way IIT and IIM profs are doing. You are teaching just like an university/college profs. If you want more.. go and lick boot of developed countries...

then the govt must close down and lock out all other engineering colleges and B Schools mushrooming all over the country and churning out garbage who ultimately end up in contact centers; the much social and savvy ones move up the ladder there and the rest of the bunch make no sense!!!

Here are my opinoins...

1) Salary : definitely needs to be way higher than what it is now. Have performance based pay with huge extra pay for good performance. You can't attract fresh PhDs with offering such low pays.

2) Contractual hiring : Yes hiring of fresh Phd candidates should be on contractual basis. It is being implemented successfully in US with the name " tenure system". My observation tells me that assistant professors without tenure work really hard and build their research base which helps them to successfully continue their research.

3)Assistant profs don't need teaching experience. If a prof knows well about what he is teaching students can follow, provided the prof has good communication skills.

IITs contribute to USA not India
by Dr Dang on Sep 24, 2009 10:26 PM  | Hide replies

Let USA pay salaries to IIT profs. In fact, let them tale IITs over. Indians don't need IITs because it is a waste of money if you are watering a tree whose fruits are being enjoyed by someone else. Another idea - IIT students should sign a 10 year stay-in-India bond during admission.

Dr. Dang, You should be Dr. Trash. Do you know how much money is remitted by these ex-IITians back to India, if you taking a monetary aspect of this whole deal.
As far as the salary goew, when will these IIT learn to survive on their own. They should generate their own income, either through research or donation or endowment. These professors will then realise that U.S tech professors earn that kind of salary because they generate that kind of money to their universities. No one is giving it to them in charity. They are in their labs 18 hours a days just to discover something new.

Idea
by Junior Don on Sep 24, 2009 10:24 PM  | Hide replies

So the Idea is to make IITians feel disgusted about India and Indians. They start feeeling hatred for the system and ultimately migrate to US. Well done US, UPA, and sibbal. Thanks.

So the main culprits are US and UPA not general Indians. Here also only few people are making them feel disgusted having different IDs.

The teachers of the IITs must not feel that they should be treated as superior to all other Indians.
India is still a poor country, and the IIT teachers already enjoy a much better pay-packet and other benefits compared to most other people, including teachers at other institutes of higher education.

If you look around you will find people from all kinds of institutes making great contribution to society. I am sure the contribution of non-IITans is much more to India than the contribution of IITans. We have to ask the fundamental question - why are IITs needed? What is the use in spending so much money on them? It is a known fact that a REC Btech costs the govt about 18 times less than an IIT btech, and at the end they both contribute the same to the society. It is the same stuff they study. IITans have only used IITs and run away to the US to serve US. why should the indian taxpayer pay for their high-profile education? Let them become autonomous and fend for themselves. Soon they will know their worth.

The IIT teachers should not behave as if they must be treated as superiors to all other Indians. India is still a poor country, and by the Indian standard, the IIT teachers get a very fat pay packet - even compared to most other teachers at the higher education institutes.

It is surprising that they claim to be indian and yet fail to understand their own country!100 crores striving hard for square meal a day and they demand US salaries. They should realize that it is this country which has raised them to this status. However lot of unnecessary pampering by Government is the cause of present behaviour. If they want autonomy let them run a private institute with no govt aid(tax payer's money). Lets see how many students and of what calibre they can get to pay the US equivalent fees in the IIT to support their US salaries.Govt should stop pampering this IIT and IIM as special class and treat all educational institutions eqally.Constitution also does not provide for such elite treatment on such grounds and if the govt succumbs to such demands it will be dicrimination unsustainable in the eyes of law. Infact they have not remained indian since years and most have flocked out to developped countries. Most brain drain has been from IITs. Its indian tax payer who spend for them and they serve the foreigners. If the students are like this naturally the teachers are responsible for this attitude development in them. And now they want US salaries so let them go to US and get a job there. They cant have the best of both the worlds!

IIT has to compete with the world and not with the poors of the country. Politicians and ministers have all the things they want then why not the people who are best in their class?
And btw what you have done for the poor ppl in India, except this lecturing?

Your staement is comendable. I am from one of the IITS. in the department I studied only 3 or 4 faculties out of some 25 faculties were up to the standard. 50 percent were utter crap.
The 3 year assesment period is a very good idea. Good work minister.

Anand is right. As an ex-IIT an I can say that a significant portion of the iit staff are not good enough
to teach. The three year assessment is a MUST.Why teachers of a premium institution want to run away from Probation?
