IIT has much better accountability than other departments of the governments. most government offices are pilferage points, with choice candidates. customs, police, excise, revenue, all kinds of offices with an extremely fine tuned payola system that reaches all the way upto the PM's office. you get the cut whether you like it or not.
Why can't Govt propose for IIT Prof to do invention which will fetch money? Don't do research for research sake, unless there is a practical application. Earn money and keep it with you. IIT's don't want Govt interference, which is understandable, but then they should not go back to Govt demanding higher salaries.

By practical applicability, I meant the outcome of research should be able to generate money. Don't do theoratical paper publication. We have best brains in IIT's, now what is needed is to give some business acumen to them. They can tap private companies for funding, to do research for them. All over the world people are trying to do things in better, faster, economical way, now this is the chance of IIT's to add to that.
let IITs become autonomous and earn and spend on their own. If the faculty feels that they are worth much more than they get, let them prove it by becoming autonomous, without taking a single paisa from the government. This is the litmus test. Let the government tell them straight - either take what govt gives or fend for yourselves. simple. These professors use their age old notes that their teachers gave when they were students, with their pages turned yellow with stickers and tapes to hold the torn pages and talk unrealistic classroom bulls* go out in the open and face the real world. They have enough facilities, everything is free inside their campuses, much more than they want. They have no regard for the taxpayer who pays for their luxury and consider the taxpayer dullheads and useless. Let them fend for themselves.

The money these professor's wards/students back to India from abroad would put indian tax payers to shame. Infosys founder(s) were all from IIT. Examples are aplenty. So these individuals has contributed way too much. It would would be foolish to trivialize their contribution.
Sibal charged world class rates for appearing in Supreme Courts etc on behalf of his clients. In case of IIT faculty-he says he will not because of lack of resources! Sibal-Why two standards/

I guess Sibal charged money from his clients. But the IIT teachers are paid from government fund, which is created by common people.

(1)"Senior bureaucrates have given themselves a massive, second salary hike just a year after their pay revised under the Sixth Pay Commission - at a time when the government is cutting costs, swearing by austerity....Additional secretary-level officers, second in the nation's babudom hierarchy, have been placed in a pay scale that starts over 80 percent above the range in which they were placed under the pay commission.....Ironically, the amended rules were notified just five days before the government snipped proposed salaries for IIT and IIM faculty, citing shortage of central funds to meet demands of the teachers...." - The Telegraph, Calcutta Dt. 19 September. The above one contradicts Mr Sibal's contention.
(2)Sometime back remuneration & perks etc of MP's and top dignatories in the government were enhanced significantly and the then Hon'ble Speaker Mr Somenath Chatterjee wished that such enhancements should have been decided by a Commission like other cases.
Above exhibits lack of proper and seriouness of intent on the part of Mr Sibal.

Those who are demanding USA-class salary, just throw them out of IITs. only 10 to 20% professors are up to the standard in IITs. In fact, there should be a 5-year assessment for all professors.
There are lots of talented researchers abroad who want to go back to India. They can take over from these oldies who do not perform but asking for higher salary!!!

what made you think that talented researchers of indian origin want to come back to make career? Those who has some family constranits only want to return. Don't live in fool paradise.

was he charging to Govt. He only charged to one who could pay. IIT faculty should also to apply in other firms which gives the World class salary, let us see if one will be absorbed.
