IIT Btech students who get into IIT on general merit are world class in terms of their learning capabilities. Rest of them are not, not even the faculty. So it is incorrect to say that everyone in IIT, including the other staff are world class and hence must be paid world class salaries. Most of the PhDs thesis there rot in the shelfs, only to be used by other PhD seekers, and have no practical relavance. India has not got any direct benefits from IITs because indian taxpayer has paid for its running and the trained Btechs have run away to the US and settled there. So, shift IITs to the US and let the US goverment pay for it, and if the teachers of the IITs think that they are world class then they will get US salaries there.

current situation of IIT/IIM Directors
by Shiva Muthu on Sep 24, 2009 09:05 PM  | Hide replies

I have heard senior faculty members from RECs, now NITs, say that a few decades ago the Secretary of Education/HRD would visit the Principals in their offices. The NIT principals were treated with great respect and their views were greatly valued. The ministry used to value them and defer to them. Now they are treated like a principal of any government college. What a fall. Think about the situation now. IITs have also been pushed to that level. If the Directors of some of the best institutes in the country are not respected by the ministry, this is really a sad state of affairs. If this is the plight of people who are treated on par with Cabinet Secretaries, I shudder to think about how ministry treats an Assistant Professor or other faculty members who are ranked very low in the totem pole.

No body is coming to them for abusing of doing nothing. Recently, IIT Kgp director was beaten by their own students so what image they have in their own campus, you can think.
Sibbal is very right, he should be strict. Salary will be decided by the Goverment and Sibbal is ready to discuss that. Even the hunger strike itself has shown that these professors are considering their value equivalent to any of the workers association in one private or public firm.

once in a while these directors and faculties are to be beaten to discipline them. There are rotten tomatoes everywhere. Just because someone is an IIT professor we cannot say that he deserves respect, I can say may be only 10% deserve respect, rest do not.

PB4 for Assst. prof with 3 years experience
by Shiva Muthu on Sep 24, 2009 09:00 PM  | Hide replies

PB4 is required because :
1. In IITs, the job done by a Professor, Associate or an Assistant is not very different. The increase of salary is only a reward for the contributions made and not for additional responsibilities as is the case everywhere else (With poisition on assumes more responsibilities). Justice demands a flat salary structure.
2. The logic of consultancy etc. earnings do not apply as he / she is yet to establish his / her standing. He / She cannot even take a sabbatical / long leave.
3. The salary may not be sufficient to maintain a soceital standing. With all the background the young men and women need a decent standard of living.
4. The same is there in UGC for Associate Prof. As per 5th pay, Asst. prof at IIT is equivalent to Associate Prof. at University.

The salary is just not decide by the job or the presuure one take of his/her work. Assistant should get the same as prof, all should become the senior prof and there should be no cap of 40%. What will create the competition of performing well.
