RE:True but dissappointing
by Amit Batra on Jul 02, 2004 07:04 PM

Nidhi,

You should realize that there are 2 kinds of IT companies -- services companies (like TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Satyam, IBM etc.) and product-based companies (like Adobe, Microsoft, ST MicroElectronics, Intel , Texas Instruments etc.)

If you are working for a services company, it will never pay any attention to your special skills (because they don't need to -- their work is far away from real technology).

On the other hand, work for a product-based company and you'll realize they let you realize your dream of what true technology is.

NON_BE
well summarized
by NON_BE on Jul 01, 2004 01:07 PM

Dear Rashmi,
If only i could have got my eyes on this article when i took the plunge. Now that i look at it, i seem to have done all the possible dont's while choosing my stream.
Though I'm very happy where I am right now, i often think that things could have been a lot better with the right choices.
Being a non-BE i dunno if i qualify to comment on this(i prolly am the IT-PUPPY) - An issue that concerns not only freshers but also ppl getting into colleges .. could not have been put in a better manner. Its the most common problem faced by students today .. very real .. practical .. frank .. and not to mention funny.
Looking forward to the MBA-cats & dogs article.Hopefully t'will help me for my future choices.

Really Good Article
by Santosh on Jun 30, 2004 05:02 PM

Hi Rashmi,
The article is too interseting to read as it reveals the hiring process of the software companies in the IT Industry in the last couple of years. But my question is that if a student is interested in a branch in which he won't get admission in a reputed college,is it a better choice to opt for other branch in a reputed college/University???
Even if he opts for other branch without any interest, will he succeed???

Dear Rashmi

Let me bring one more thing in your kind notice that, more than the selection of college what you studies is matter a lot. If student can get carrier guidance in the college itself. I am sure we can stop this Dog and Cat game through proper distribute of talent in various field. Dont u think so

Regards
Vishal

Illogical!
by Rashmi on Jun 29, 2004 10:11 AM

I couldn't even bear to finish reading the article.
Such stuff from an IIM grad!

The entire reasoning of the article is flawed. How can anyone write such things as, "It's not what you study, but where you study that counts". Life is much more than bagging the best jobs. As a responsible adult, one should be encouraging the youth to take up what he/she finds interesting.

A grad from a not-well-known institute may have to struggle for some months, but ultimately it is one's talent that counts.
I know ppl from unknown corners making their mark and I know grads from IITs and IIMs doing useless work.

Learnability ? How do you measure that ?.
by DTR on Jun 28, 2004 09:10 PM

Yeah, I agree that most of premeier Indian Software companies (I wouldn't even call them S/W company, I would only call then, S/W or IT services companies, which provide services to overseas clients, don't even have the ability to design a product and successfully market it in a Global economy), has the perception that , Students who gets good grades, seem to have good learning skills. But from my experience, I have seen people who had good academic grades stuggling in their profession (when working for foreign companies). But they have good memory power, but they don't know how to use them. They are good enough for Indian companies, since they work within a framework.

Indian education system, still struggles, to produce people with creativity, ability to survive in unfamiliar situations, with independent thoughts etc.
