Its really tough to get into engineering and on the top of it you need to excel further for IIMs the approach of IIMs is right, its only hardwork it pays. Good article to highlight the requirements
A 10th class pass is all the schooling it requires, if any, to do the IT jobs - been there done that. That is only so that one understands enough English and knows about the workings of the society (that includes business). Other than that good reasoning and logic (that is not 'taught' in any of the glorified courses in India) is needed, which is mostlly learnt by oneself, using what one has. This fad about the engg degree is unbelievable - in fact, science courses exercise the brain a lot more than engg courses. Trends come and trends go, and things sell and things don't...c'est la vie.
Hi Rashmi, I think your article was good one!. But, i think u should also write another story (apart from the MBA cats and dogs).. U should write abt how to turn into enterpruners (a big no no for a guy/gal from middle class), although u might be a engg, doc, mba or bsc grad. Hoping to read something on that.
well, the article was informative indeed. but the author needs to update her knowledge regarding present situations. most of the things r not as said by the author. check them out.
i appreciate the articles written by Ms Rashmi which are very clear and expose the mess that "higher education in India" is in., but a series of articles on like subject viz.higher education and job prospects have been discussed among others by Jagannathan in Microview/Business Standard(log on to Business Standard site and search for Jagannathan - article is "Affirmative Action and Inaction - June 29 - 2004 - higher education is a conspiracy of middle classes to keep the young out of the job market for as long as possible and then grab the best going oppurtunity [aptitude go to hell]- This game cannot be played by the poorer classes and rich don't participate anyway - check out the article).

hi Praveen .. dont get disheartened..I am also a Mech Engg from Goa ,and have got into IT that too in campus placement.. so there is no discrimination against mech students. keep trying you will surely get through.
I wish I read this article long back when I was struggling for jobs. Anyways, a good article, throwing light on important facts and care to be taken by the freshers, and for students what to look out in future. Once out of college, there is hell out there and definitely you need direction in some way or other to be at the right place at right time. Good Luck Students!! SK
