Impressive at a glance, let's see more...
by Anadi on Jun 26, 2004 09:05 AM

Hi,
As I went through this article, I enjoyed and felt there are some people having concern, but couldn't understand till the end that a person claiming to be writing for youth, was writing this with what concern?
Why a discussion about "IT Cats and dogs?" What message a person planning to go in IT or for that matter, anyone planning to get into the engineering colleges should take from this article. Going to the depth of the article, even though it was showing opprtunities after opportunities that if you fail to be a campus recruited programmer, you can get a job, or even if you can't , you have BPO to go to, I felt it is more on the depressive side and meant sarcasm than analysis of the situation.
Wouldn't it be better if people with intellect start putting there thought in ideas for furture than analyzing the present and that also not showing path but confusing people. I would say an article coming in public might be much better if it's target is not to have flashy titles and evaluate a specific group for others and give them a picture which is based on ones individual thoughts, but to have ideas about future and show path to the youth without confusing them.

True but dissappointing
by Nidhi on Jun 26, 2004 04:56 AM

Dear Rashmi, I am also a computer science student and have been away from home for about 3 yrs.Studies have kept me busy from keeping much track of what's going on,so I can't comment on whether u've written is true or not but I find it a bit dissaponting that the employers in India don't give much consideration to the student's intrests in the subject.I wish those ppl luck if they can carry on working without being passionate about thier work. But it hardly seems promising for students when they start seeing the their studies as just a means earning money rather doing something they strongly feel about.

stupid article.... wake up guyz!!!!

Dear Rashmi!!

I was shocked to see an article like this from a highly educated lady like you. (IIM graduate) and more appalled to see replies to this article,, it seems everybody is so frustrated and thats the reason why supporting this article. As per figures in your article, only 1/6th of the engineering graduate make it to the highly paid software jobs (I know many people doing just a typing work or attending calls in their offices,, and calls themselves so called IT professional ,,,, and more ever these jobs are no more secured,, you can get kicked off anytime!!!) and you are misdirecting aspiring engineering students to just go ahead and take admission for whichever branch they get,,, and then after spending 4 years of their important life studying engineering, you are suggesting them to become so called dogs ( this is what you termed the other 250,000+ engineering students) and run behind BPO jobs,,(which anybody can do,, you dont need 4 years of engineering study to attend stupid calls) why the hell waste your 4 years of time, money ( without which its very difficult to get in to engineering college now a days) and not only that,, contd....... in next message

Its ok to have ur thoughts said... but u cant go against someones expression just because of ur feelings. There must be an analytical/statistical treatment explaining what exactly and in what way, stated things are wrong....

Do whatever it takes to get a "job" soon after college. By the time you reach your mid-20s, you will know the true meaning and value of your life and you'll be led to your career. If you think you have the talent and skill to get a job that's really aligned with your interests from the very beginning, be ready to accept that your interests may change.

Good article for graduate students
by Suryadev on Jun 25, 2004 10:18 PM  | Hide replies

Dear kitti Rashmi:

Your Dogy article is Caty! Congrats. Is this all about Cats and Dogs these graduates need to know or more? It is also very important to let the graduates know the nature of duties these folks are going to do after recruitment. Must be frustating for many doing routine job. For example a mechanical engineer has to spend rest of his life as data base guy. For me it is total nonsence to learn that Engineers working for IT jobs. Moreover these companies recruit through competetive tests!!! An engineering graduate can grasp mathematics, designs and complicated drawings to score above 60% but these companies still want to take recruitment tests! It's the luxuary these companies are enjoying in India. I bet that if you ask those senior folks (recruiters) to take these tests they will not go through! It's a Shame to India. Is that all about money this society meant for? The nature of jobs done by Infosys, Wipro and TCS are not suited for Engineers (Comp. science may be an exception). Fifty over years of independence we still don't have our own planes, efficient automobiles, good roads and other infrastructure. Engineering graduates have to do more for our Nation.

Your opinion is correct

Though I'm Computer Engg. now I realize that running just for CS branch without bothering college was a mistake. Whats there in Infy,TCs.. actually quality of work is just a computer literate high paid clerk. It doesn't suit to Comp. Sc. graduate. These companies r even the last prefence of people from elite colleges. They r recruiting engineers just bcoz due to private colleges they r available easily nowadays due to lot of private colleges(I donno what would be the future of those engineers). As far the money is concerned their clients r at US. So nobody will do this stupid job at US just for 500$ a month while our elite engineers (so called by media) do it happily. There is nothing called job satisfaction. PLus all subs r good, is mech.or civil not challenging?? Definitely it is..and people working in core engg. though may earn less but they r true engineers. It doesn't mean that Comp. Sc. isn't of worth, but most of the jobs r application based only in IT field and those belonging to the core software are v.v. low numbered and only a few IIT/REC fellows get. Good college provides good facilities while comp. at an average college??????????

"Engineering graduates have to do more for our Nation." -- for example -- building a road in Bihar and getting shot...and meanwhile what will the IT companies do...may be close down shop or start recruiting Chinese people to do the programming as our engineers will be doing something for the nation..

what crap are you saying..why are you so far away from the practicality of life..God's sake 300,000 engg. grads...only 55,000 in IT...rest (300,000-55,000 = 245,000) can do the engg. job (if there are any in India)..

why are people so paranoid and circumspect about something which is good for the economy ?

Narrow mindset

Learning engineering course in any branch (not of interest) for the sake of an IT job may ruin the candiadte's career. Studying a course in civil engineer, if not interested, there is a good chance that I may fail in Buliding Design course especially when I know I am not atall good at drawing.
If you study well, you surely get good score/grades..and consequently you get a decent job.

For a moment, just think of a case wherein.. a software company lays off some people with background of mech, meta, civil, chem??? Mind you, this has happened earlier..barely a few years ago...

There are good jobs in India in the core sector as well where your technical expertise can be well exploited..this surely gives job satisfaction, which I think matter most in the long run.

IIT

Fact!
by Sireesha on Jun 25, 2004 07:41 PM

Real true! There were rare opportunities for those who passed out in 2002. It was really tough time to get even a call for an interview. The previous batches had an option to select which company to join as they had many option in their hand and were not able to decide to which company to join and the fate of 2002 people was that not even a single interview call. Also a few companies which came forward were looking for engineers from reputed institutions. It is true to say that 'a single opportunity is required to prove ourselves' in my opinion.
