Only one Exam
by Dulal Das on Feb 16, 2012 08:18 PM  | Hide replies

Only one exam is needed for Engg all over India for central govt. colleges. Let it be run by those who conducts IIT-JEE.
No weigh-age to School Board Exam please.

Yeah, in Bihar people write board exams at home, in some cases someone else write for them.

Board exams are totally bogus, any system based on board exam is bogus in itself.

Not possible. JEE is designed to create a range of marks at the top level. A guy getting into Civil Engg might not even have half the marks of the top ranker. But the guy getting in Civil is still better off than the lakhs of others who have taken the exam and not qualified. Creating a single test would be really tough to make such a distribution of marks and still be able to place a few lakh aspirants across the country based on it. A test meant for the top bracket cannot be used to classify the bottom guys as well.

Narayan murthy had commented on the quality of IIT students..
by Indian Guru on Feb 16, 2012 08:11 PM  | Hide replies

Infosys Narayan Murthy had commented on the quality of IIT students. He felt that the majority lot of quality of IIT students has gone down..

May be this was his thought to review the system and had passed on the message to Sibal as what exactly he needs..

During Kapil Sibal's stint it will only get worse...considering how viciously he handled negotiation on Lokpal bill.

dont fiddle with IITs and IIMs
by veerapuram dharan on Feb 16, 2012 08:03 PM  | Hide replies

these two along with IISc are the only world class institutes in india that has a historic reputation across the world..these are not only talent identifying schools but mainly a research hub..if the basic mechanism of identifying a brilliant student in these institutes is compromised, then the india which is famously remembered for researchers like cvraman, bose, chandrasekhar etc will turn into producing fake AQ khans....

Best comment here and wish Rediff had a ranking system so we could highlight good comments and make them more visible. That abundance of what is just classic INTELLIGENCE is India's greatest human resource - please don't dilute it by making the ridiculous board exams a measure of a person's intelligence. The entrance exams aren't the best measure either but then we can never come to a consensus about the "best". Therefore please leave it to the institutions to decide how they award merit.

Sorry - I was too hasty to post a reply - my bad. I agree with all that you've said, except for that last part "producing fake AQ khans" - I have no idea what you mean by that particular phrase "fake AQ khans" and for me it signifies nothing. I mean, there can be plenty of fake khans, and singhs, and iyers and boses and mistrys and d'souzas and what not so I don't see the significance of saying fake aq khan!

thanks..what i meant to say at the last was, if we pollute the prevalent entrance system, then a less intellect would get an IIT degree and instead of churning out cvramans, we would get people like AQ khan, who are literally thiefs of nuclear technology...

ISEET minus 10 2 marks, the way to go forward..
by Indian Guru on Feb 16, 2012 08:02 PM  | Hide replies

ISEET is in line with the international trend, where logical thinking and reasoning aptitude takes precedence..

The current lot of IIT/JEE is spurning candidates who are experts in precision rote.

They are the best of the best at learning and are using knowledge that already exists, but they are unable to use the existing knowledge to come up with something new, and this is were identifying people with intelligence, ability to reason, logic and defying the current trends comes into picture..

Mr. Sibal with all the poor performance in science and research seem to come with the right answer, where students joining or selected to IITs have different ambitions than, just competing and joining for a high paid job..

well, ur point about the logical thinking etc is valid..but these are technical institutes, where an intense subject knowledge is the need of the hour..how will a logical reasoning will help technical students when they are predominantly applied in management areas?

The bottom line is a person who has attitude and aptitude to make it to IITs, will eventually get through to IIT, no matter what the pattern of examination is.

The pattern of IIT/JEE has it self undergone major change over many years..

It dosen't matter whether it s IIT/JEE or ISEET.
