There are thousands of castes in OBC which didn't even enter legislative assembly nor parliament atleast once after independence including MLC. Yadavs are not restricted to Bihar or UP. They are all over india. Come south india to see the horrible standard of living of Yadavs. You fear as if caste census helps only OBC is meaningless. Dark skinned people comment is nonsense. True indeneous indians are dark skinned else need to check their chromosomes :)

POLITICIANS - THE REAL OUTCASTES
by bidhan gupta on May 15, 2010 07:43 PM

We all agree that we are decent & good human beings. We are also proud that we are INDIANS. What are we ashamed of? For one, it is our caste system which we need to totally eliminate from our society. Their is definitely a need to consider all human beings as equal. Unfortunately we have given rise to an unwanted caste - the POLITICIAN CASTE - which has time & again exploited the religion & caste factor to create hung parliaments / assemblys. In fact we have a state which cannot decide on a Chief Minister because of caste / creed factor. The state finally decides on such a person who cannot win an election by himself & cannot take even the simplest of decision - from where he should fight an election? Ever heard of such a caste of politicians. Sadly our constitution allows him to thrive. Cheers to our INDIAN DEMOCRACY THROUGH CASTE.

RESERVATIONS ARE THE MAIN PROBLEM!!!!
by alok bhagat on May 15, 2010 07:42 PM  | Hide replies

The main problem is reservation. Had there been no reservations, people would not have discussed this topic in this fashion. Here, nobody is opposing caste based census, just that caste based census will create more freebies, and nobody wants that.

Once quality and compulsory education reaches all indians , reservations will die as people will demand quality through equal opportunities. Till then, no one can stop reservations. Had reservations been properly implemented, by this time we could have achieved some satisfactory results to cut down reservations. Caste based census will help whether reservations have helped them or not.

caste census is essential
by harsha on May 15, 2010 07:39 PM  | Hide replies

The census is about the statistics of various parameters in the country. What is the problem to know the exact numbers of SC/ST/ OBC people of India.
If we can know the numbers of persons belonging to religious and linguistic groups; why not Caste census. In the age of RTI, everything should be transparent to the citizens.

We should not be afraid of calling a spade a spape

Politicians needs votes. If not castes, they will demand votes on religions, regions, gender, handicapts, homosexuals, marxcism, naxalism, democracy, socialism and what not. Come out of your irrational fear. Once people are educated, they will demand only quality , transparency and accountability .

You must have started this compaign when reservation was introduced in System during 1950s. Or atleast when reservation was refabricated during 1991 in the name of Mandal, or atleast when reservation was reimposed in the name of OBC during 2007 or atleast when AP govt introduced Reservation for Minorities in 2005 or atleast when govt appointed sachar commission to head count people in the service on basis of religion or atleast when govt appointed Ranganath mishra commission to reintroduce reservation on basis of religion, or atleast when Handful of MPs supported currupt Justice Dinakaran in the name of Caste or atleast when DMK seeking excuses on A Raja issue in the name of caste or atleast finally When our present union cabinet appointed on basis of caste and creed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! but not now. Remove reservation first
by ramanathan krishnan on May 15, 2010 07:31 PM  | Hide replies

Why this publicity stunt by rediff? Caste is asked to keep track of reservation. First reservation should be removed, then asking caste in census should be removed. In fact this is a healthy way, atleast everything is well recorded, and people have lesser opportunities to cheat later. Govt is doing some good things and stupid media is opposing that. Esp so called bright talents (hrd rediff recruits from IIMs also) are also so stupid, very sad

Nonsense, if you have reservations you have to have census to back it up. Let Rediff grow some cojones and start a campaign against reservation based on Caste and then Ill see merit in this silly excercise...

This is a biased campaign
by Niraj Kumar on May 15, 2010 07:23 PM  | Hide replies

This is a completely biased campaign from an agency which is supposed to be neutral. The campaign is launched based on the premise that an overwhelming majority of Indians are against the caste census, which is a flawed assumption. Rediff could have at best asked people for their opinion. It hasn't launched any campaign asking people to assert their opinion for caste census. Just like brutal caste system that denies privileges and voice to the oppressed castes, rediff has also denied people of a platform (campaign) to express their voice for caste census.

There are valid The argument that caste census will reinforce casteism in social life and public policy is ridiculous. Caste system will only become irrelevant when all castes become equally prosperous and powerful. The caste system will continue to flourish, as long as the gap remains and to make all castes prosperous and powerful, you need affirmative actions and to frame a policy for it, you also need reliable data. Earlier many had questioned the validity of reservations for OBCs based on 1931 data but now they are opposing the caste census. This is double standard at its best.

and how you are going to achieve this ?

In Rajasthan 99% Reserved job are taken by a single cast that is Meena ...

they are neither too poor nor untouchables ...

There is no chance that a person from untouchable cast can take benefit of reservation ...

There is another powerful cast Gujjars demanding reservations...and i think given ....

So how it going ... when can i expect a cast free india ?

It is not needed
by alok bhagat on May 15, 2010 07:15 PM

There is absolutely no need of caste based census.
rather do a income based census, see who is actually in need of the help.
Even people who are from the backward castes and are well educated donot want all this reformative policies. Rather form policies for the rural tribal and ecomonically backward people. I strongly feel that people who are educated, having jobs and are living in urban towns and cities do not need and want this freebees from the government.
