Bindra's feat bigger than World Cup glory: Kapil

This is what the best cricketer of India says, so let's not even compare cricket with the real sporting event Olympics and the participants.

Shooting again is a Backdoor entry sports for Olympics and does not suit CITIUS,ALTIUS,FORTIUS motto of Olympics. It is more like a Casino Activity and Rich Man's passtime.
Anyway because in India hardly there is anything called SPORTS, this Bindra must be praised.

yes last time they used to shoot kabootar, chil, duck, squirrel n deer. how it can be sport? ban shooting.
Ban boxing too it is inhumane to see one human hitting another n bringing them to ground, bleeding the opponent. there is no glory.
Swimming also why so many events just need freestyle and 1000m to test. phelps just learnt one thing and got 8 medals. whereas soccer 11 people fight just to get one gold. UNfair.

sports are not just displaying physical endurance. they are also synonimous with mental sophistication. physical and mental endurance is what olympics tests. shooting needs tremendous mental concentration with body power to support it. so it is correct fit to be in olympics. Bindra has indeed shown ifnot complete but to an extent of the olympian talent. hope he spends the fortune he earned in establishing shooting traning centers. indians are known to be computer savvy ( mental ability) so forsure we can expect good results provided this cricket is banned for some years in india

even tea plantation, cooking, manufacturing, handloom works require lot of physical endurance, mental alertness and endurance along with quality so what? Even if u r succesful in life you need to manage 24 hrs of your day in a very high planned way which taxes you physically and mentally and that too everyday of ur life not like once in 4 years so what? Get ur general awareness high before making such statement.

Cricket is a Passtime Casino like Gaming Act

A Footballer runs near to 20Miles in 90 minutes that is one game.

A Cricketer runs hardly 3 miles in five days.

Cricket is a Royal Passtime for Older People, dirty politicians and Colonial bodies to manage and run and promote.

It is mostly a non sporting CASINO HOUSE like gaming activity and hardy welcomed by any sporting nation other than some old colonial setups and some modern dirty minds who wants shortcut to fame and make some quick bucks through fake glamour and marketing xtravaganza.

Let's enjoy Olympics without the cricket hype
by Zhakas Bhidu on Aug 17, 2008 09:59 PM  | Hide replies

We all know that where ever in India cricket is popular other sports have suffered (not cricket fault, but that's the fact). Take Kerala, Punjab, West Bengal, where cricket is not big you have other real sports doing well at the grass root level. Though Mumbai, Delhi are big cities, you don't see significant contribution to other sports from these cities.
Not to mention the imperial hangover of cricket, let's keep cricket out of Olympics and watch the REAL SPORT.

Cricket should not be included in Olympics.
It will steal whatever little limelights the Bindras, Kumars are getting for now. Even after winning medals for the country such players end up their lives in obscurity. But cricketers, even after match fixing, slapping etc. get accolades in this part of world.
Forget Olympics, but number of cricket tournaments played in a year should also be limited to a few. There should be ban on live telecast of cricket. Let people have some time to do other essential works which are in fact more important than cricket.

How about London 2012 Games -- hosting T20 Olympic cricket ?
by Vinayaka on Aug 17, 2008 09:52 PM  | Hide replies

Cricket is a globally MAJOR POPULAR , PHYSICALLY demanding sport which has ACTION, RUNNING and STRENGTH involved.

Why its not an Olympic sport when it has television viewership in more than 80 countries with millions of people watching World Cups every 4 years and also T20 tournaments throughout ? Isnt it similar to Baseball ? Then why not have it ?

Its not a new sport. Its been existing for more than 100 years now even before the birth of Modern Olympics.

Its a game of BAT and BALL which existed in ancient days also. So why CRICKET is STILL not part of Olympics ? Why ?

Forget about whether India will win or not win medal in cricket. JUST THINK of CRICKET from INTERNATIONAL / GLOBAL SCENARIO.

More and more countries are learning now. Even countries like Canada, Ireland, Scotland, UAE, Hongkong have teams apart from the 9 ICC recognized Test playing nations. For T20 (20 overs slam bang high voltage FAST, glamourous cricket you dont even have to be a Test playing nation. Anyone can play T20 isnt it ? So we already have more than 20 countries ready to play and more countries learning it and taking interest in T20 every year.

If they can just have 12 countries playing Hockey at Olympics out of 20 which play globaly cant we have T20 cricket as medal sport with 12 countries participating in say LONDON 2012 Olympics. What would be more APTER a debut for Cricket in Olympics than London the home of cricket hosting Olympic cricket or 1st time in history ?

You must be from Goa, that never produced one single sporting major ever in its history. With all its love for soccer, Goans, Keralites and Bengalis don't have enough fortitude to produce an international standard soccer team for India. They have barely any cricket talent, barring Saurav Ganguly and hence all this jealousy towards cricket. I understand your pain, bro.

The truth is Mr.Vinayaka, that every country that exists in the world has a football team and the world cup soccer is most popular sporting event in the world after Olympics probably. Cricket is popular only in a few countries including. It is losing ground in England and West Indies.

However much you wish, cricket can never be an Olympic sport. It is too boring.

CANCER OF CRICKET CAN ENGULF THE OLYMPICS
by jayakrishna sahu on Aug 17, 2008 09:52 PM  | Hide replies

Cricket has ruined the prospects of all other sports in India. What a tragedy it is that a nation of India's size is euphoric over a single gold medal! Does the nation has any right to feel proud of this achievement? Bindra's achievement is purely personal. It is his and his family's achievement.

Christie is right in opposing cricket's entry into the Olympics, though I don't agree with her reasoning. There are both individual and team games in the Olympics.

Cricket is ostracised from the Olympics due to other reasons. Criocket is a game for the underdogs, weaklings and sissies. Look at the Indian cricketr "stars" and their unending injuries. Force them to play football, hockey, basketball or volleyball for half-an-hour, and I bet, the majority of them will faint on the field.

Instead of making funny proposals like entry of cricket into Olympics, let's seriously think about banning this farcical-sport from our country for a decade, if not for ever.

Did you ever feel the exhilaration of bowling a perfect ball and getting the batsman out? Did you ever hit a boundary or sixer and come back home to tell your parents about it?

OR

Did you suck at every sport, including cricket, during your childhood? Did your friends not let you play cricket with them, or did you get out for zero every time you went out to bat? Did you fumble for catches, let balls go by you while you fielded? Do you have pain deep in your psyche?
I can only empathize your sociopath behavior towards cricket, I suggest medical treatment.

Wait a second.. You are a soccer playing commie! No wonder. Despite having teams like Mohun Bagan, Mohd Sporting Club and what not, why have you guys not sent a qualifying Soccer team to the Olympics. Forget Olympics, why don't you soccer playing clowns not qualify for even the World cup.. Do you ever qualify to play in the Asian context?
The bottom line is, nobody stops anybody from being good in the sport of their choice. Just because Dhoni played cricket, he did not stop anybody from being a good soccer player. Produce soccer stars and they will get endorsement money and make the sport more popular.

We have tennis "stars" like Sania Mirza and Mahesh Bhupati who cannot sustain international tournaments to the last 8 stage, and why blame cricet for that?
There were always P.T Usha, Aswhini Nachappas and Malleshwaris, who were never good enough for international level of competition. Did Gavaskar or Dhoni stop the Government from building better track and field training facilities?
Why is there not a single Marathon entry from India? It does not require any equipment/training facility, even Kenyan and Ethiopian athletes take part in that and WIN!

Don't go about bad mouthing other sportspersons. You say that no cricketer ever prevented others from excelling. It is not that cricketers physically prevent others, it is simply that there is no encouragement for other sports. If today the boxers are doing well, it is because of their determination and their ability to overcome official apathy. We still celebrate the world cup win of 1983 in 2008. How many tournaments have we won after 1983 apart from the T20 cup? According to you, nobody ever needs any training facility and they can simply go out and win. Of all the stupidest arguments, I have heard, this takes the cake. Then why should the cricketers practice "Nets" or whatever? Why should they have equipment? Let them simply go out and win. Even with all the media hype and all the facilities at their disposal, how many championships have our cricketers won?

This idiotic government won't let the shooters import equipment and yet they are expected to win. Bhindra won because of his personal efforts and equipment.

Don't talk nonsense just because you are a cricketer.

I have often seen cricket-maniacs getting insane like you when cricket's real dirty face is exposed. But be sure cricket will be an extinct sports very shortly. It has reduced from 6 day Teast to 50-50 to 20-20. It'll be 0-0 very soon, putting eggs on your mouths.

Who said so ?Cricket has not ruined anything man Its people like you Sahu who have ruined everything. We WON GOLD MEDAL this time and 3 of our Boxers are in Quarter Finals. One of our Women's Badminton players (World No.15) reached Qtr finals too & lost after a great fight. So other sports too have improved a lot. Its not cricket to be blamed.

England introduced both cricket & hockey to India. While it took 20 years & 15 matches before India beat England in cricket for the first time (1952 test in Chennai), it took 37 years &22 matches before England beat India in hockey for the first time (Britain 2 - India 1, 1985 Champions Trophy in Perth). As long as England ruled India, they never played a match with the Indian hockey team.

So cricket didnt come in way of any sport in India. Even when it was there hockey was doing well and won 8 GOLD MEDALS in Hockey (TILL DATE the most by any country in Hockey). In cricket we didnt achieve anything other than 1 World Cup in 1983 & a T20 World Cup in 2007.

Why dont you encourage your kids to take up any one Olympics sport at a young age & train them hard day in day out to make a champion like Abhinav's parents did. They bought him a gun and not a bat. Why dont you buy your kid a swimming suit or a football ? Out of a billion Indians only 15 are in India cricket team. What about rest ? So stop talking nonsesne and let cricket do its job and lets continue winning more medals in other sports too. Let every sport survive man.

Actually we can think of sending individual cricketers to Olympics for other events. For example, Dhoni would have definitely fared better in sprint events than most of our so called athletes. His fitness levels are definitely much more superior than that of our athletes. In fact he would clock the fastest over 100 meters in India.

Why did not promote Football after 1950's when we have greats like PK Banarjee; and Hockey when we had greats like dhayanchand....we were more busy looking at Lala Amarnath, Deleep Sardesai, Gavaskar rather then PK and Dhayanchand, these 2 poor fellow might not have got even a 0.000001 % of what sachin, Dhoni have made....

The fact is that cricket was played in the 1900 games at Paris and then dropped.Like said before Cricket is a game played by a minority of the British Commonwealth countries. As if enough has not been said about our cricketers,do we need the Olympics also to praise our cricketers. We can't expect to have a sport in the Olympics just because it is famous in our country. The maximum possibility is that only when India hosts the games which doesn't seem realistic.Leave everything alone, once cricket becomes an olympic sport,i dont think we can sustain at the top level because countries like Germany,Holland,China and major part of Europe would start training at a level which we cant imagine. So it doesnt work either ways!
