Need a Tea Party Movement
by Shaunak on Apr 09, 2011 12:08 PM

Instead of fighting for another checks-and-balances position like Lokpal, Indian youth must draw inspiration from the Tea Party movement sweeping across the US, which correctly identifies the real problem as massive government (of which corruption is a mere consequence) and seeks to reduce the scope and size of the government. When we have minimal government and more market-driven democracy and people to are 'free to choose', the opportunities for corruption will automatically reduce. Remember - government is a cancer that grows at the cost of host organism (citizens). Like cancer cells, it has its own agenda and the only solution is to eradicate it (not trying to reform it). Let's fight for a goverment that serves only its legitimate functions of defense, procting our borders, our life, our property, our liberty, adjudicates on disputes and provides those public services that cannot be profitably provided by the private sector. Governmnet must move out of its policing, regulating and wealth-redistribution functions. THERE IS NO OTHER WAY.

Stop Jingoism
by Ravi on Apr 09, 2011 11:57 AM

Iam not so much worried about the people who is participating after full knowledge about what they are supporting for. Iam just addressing those who are bringing in jingoistic propositions without complete understanding about the issue.
A committe of intellectuals with high level of integrity have not drafted a rough jan lokpal bill as sugested by you Mr Harish Challa. If it has been done then the draft bill would have been very potent. The draft bill is not potent as it is and hence this agitation by Hazareji. I do support and also iam part of the movement and that is precisely why iam participating in this discussion. While i support whole heartedly about fighting corruption, what i dont support is accepting jan lokpal bill as only solution to tackle corruption. Iam supporting wholistic solution which should cover every citizen of this country, not merely by having stringent laws to control corruption by fear of law, but wiping out the root cause of corruption.
How many of us all who are participating in this movement are aware of root cause of corruption in this country? how many are capable enough to work out ways and means to tackle this menace? How many can think creatively and plan meticulously about how to imbine a sense of morality in every cittizen of this country? These are my questions and i dfinitely do have some answers and also expect others to contribute to finding solutions and implement them.

Article for a Cause or Case study?
by Jayesh Bahadkar on Apr 09, 2011 11:56 AM

This article by Mr. B Raman ignores some of the basic principles of critical writing like proper assessment, judgement and reasoning.

At a time when majority, mainly youth, is supporting the cause and stand taken by Mr. Hazare; it is easy to attract eyeballs by expressing a contrary, controvertial opinion. The author seems to have succeded in the same.

Secondly, Mr. Hazare has not claimed his "Monopoly to wisdom" on the issue. The inaction of one and all on this issue since it was first presented in 1972 in parliament, has prompted him to take charge.

Thirdly, Corruption a matter of "Character & Integrity" and not "Wisdom" as projected. Character & Integrity is a personal trait and is not in captivity of Wisdom. A trait that our politicians don’t have but have displayed exemplary wisdom to find innovative ways of corruption.

The author seems more focused in understanding and explaining the “Phenomenon” rather than the cause itself, comparing it with French & Egyptian history all through the article. He actually mentions that “There are many of us who are fighting on this issue of corruption for years - each in his or her humble way.”; shows that he is content with the current state of affairs.

Someone said “Desperate situations need desperate measures”

Raman, dont leave your day job
by jaint on Apr 09, 2011 11:51 AM

What proof do you have to show Anna Hazare claims "monopoly of wisdom"? In fact he even was open to not be in the drafting committee. Finally, for the first time in the history of independent India, one man lead the challenge against the pseudo democrats who were very content in looting the nation while putting on a facade of empathy towards the average citizen. These power mongers were worried that a national movement may topple the UPA. Nothing else mattered other than to hang on to power.

The dumbest line in Raman's article is this, "In Egypt, the youth kept the leadership and initiative in its hands and did not allow an 'ayatollah of democracy' to emerge by taking advantage of the mobilization of the youth and the assertion of its power." It is Anna Hazare who inspired the people of India (youth and everyone else) to raise up and protest. Anna Hazare appeared first, then the people came out in support. So where is the question of the people letting an 'ayatolla of democracy' to emerge?

Indian Democracy wins
by slater on Apr 09, 2011 11:46 AM

Well this dialogue indicates the Indian democracy is wide open for dialogue and corruption. We can air our views without fear of being intimidated like china. Next stage is removal of corruption. One Anna Hazare will not do we need a million Annas. If we go the jasmine revolution route we will have no capable leaqders only next gen corruption. It is preferabe to have a collabrative society where technology and law sustain a peaceful and egalatarian society

ego !
by Jayaraman V on Apr 09, 2011 11:40 AM

Mr.Raman, It is better to shed ego and acknowledge the efforts by Anna Hazare to catapult the anti-corruption activities to a national level. If not ego, what other factor is responsible for your tirade against Anna ? Such attitudes only dissipate our effort and fight against corruption ! Let all the anti-corruption movements come together and form a single front, without any qualms of who's their leader, so long as he forms a team to spearhead the efforts !!

FUD : Fear , Uncertanity and doubt is old tactic Mr. Raman
by Batao Na on Apr 09, 2011 11:33 AM

So a former intellegence officer is not busy spreading FUD ,

Fear, uncertainty and doubt (FUD) is a tactic used in sales, marketing, public relations, politics and propaganda. FUD is generally a strategic attempt to influence public perception by disseminating negative and dubious/false information designed to undermine the credibility of their beliefs

Any movement across world needs participants and a leader who can motivate age does not matter. How does it matter if Anna is 72 Years old or 17 ?
