Prepartition India had Urdu language that was refined and was considered urbane and sophisticated. It was the language of durbars, bazaars and adalats, in much of North India including areas that are now Pakistan. The Hindi lobby campaigned hard and got it removed. Infact one of the factors for the insecurity among muslims that led to the success of Muslim League was the removal of Urdu and the introduction of Hindi. Net result: Cities lost not only a language but even refinement. Delhi, once considered a very cultured city became boorish. Lucknow is now a city that resembles Gorakhpur and Ballia. And what has been the literary contribution of Hindi during these 62 years. No major works of literature or world class poets. It has to be forced to be spoken simply because it is not an aspirational language. The elites will never use it and those who aspire towards social mobility would eschew it.Note how contestants in Bigg Boss speak English and have to be told to speak Hindi. It has a certain rural idiom and even its prose/poerty is quite rustic, unlike Urdu that was always associated with Royalty and power. Even when it was banished from the official curriculum, Urdu has still enriched India thorugh the lyrics of Sahir, Khayyam, Khumar, Majrooh and others. I have nothing agianst Hindi but I feel that simply because Urdu's development had Muslim contribution, therefore it was less pure and replaced by the Hindi brigade. But ultimately India lot more than it gained.

So what has been the contribution of Hindi in terms of literature - prose/poetry? What you are defending has been literally imposed upon everyone including the so called - Hindi belt. I bet even you would'nt be speaking in it at home! It was sheer jealousy of the Hindi brigade that got Urdu removed even it has a voluminous body of world class literature and has the gravitas, in its vocabulary, tone and tenor, to represent a nation! Contribution wise there is nothing to talk about Hindi, all you can do is force and beg people to talk in it.

Urdu is not a language but it was developed to subdue Indian language and culture
Abu Azmi, the late Sunil Dutt, Gurudas Kamat are primarily responsible for the slums in Mumbai. They are held high glory by party workers since these slums are big votebanks. Partly to blame the middle and upper-middle class who care least about even voting.

Well said. Language is just a medium to connect with each other. Why people make such a ego issue. I see Abu's demand is valid. Adding an additional Indian language should not be any problem.

Its about identity...adding another indian language to personal portfolio of azmi should be even lesser of a problem right?
what is wrong if , azmi is asking the papers in Hindi instead of English, is hindi a foreign langauge or hindi is from Arbastan. shame on you Raj for politicising an unwanted issue.

Accept it or not, more than 80% people of India understands Hindi while less than 5% understand English.
FYI, I am no fan of any language. I love to learn as much as I can.
