Great articles...Indians abroad should make their presence felt...if all Indians unite and threatent o leave economicly flourished countries like US etc...we can bring them to their knees....but alas we indians ...can we do it!!!!

Look at china, Israel...US cannot think about annoying them....they run its economy...though US does not like China..but they do willingly with Israel...wish Indians could demand their worth in Gold from these Power-houses.

Rubbish
by Gopal on Mar 19, 2003 12:56 AM  | Hide replies

Clearly, this is the most substandard work produced by Rajeev Srinivasan in all his columns ever written on Rediff. The "religious angle" is pure speculation and no basis exists for that nonsensical assumption.

Using the Malaysian incident to heap rubbish on "pinkos" is another amatuerish attempt to paint everything wrong in India on leftists. Rajeev and his ilk assume that everyone that reads newspapers is stupid and cannot decipher leftist garbage from fact. Fact is readers can decipher both leftist and rightist nonsense.

We as a nation need to be ashamed of both incidents. The riots that followed Godhra were perhaps more shameful than Godhra itself because it resulted in deliberate slaughter of people who had nothing to do with Ayodhya or Godhra. Slaughter of both Hindus and Muslims. Raping women to avenge Godhra is perhaps taught to extremist apologists like Rajeev. I come from a very religious Hindu family, but we have never been taught to defend rapists, vandals and murderers.

I know what his response is going to be. That I am a pinko too.

The Straits Times carried a report about this incident. They commented how the UNMO, the ruling party in Malaysia, has a Youth Wing that is openly pro Pakistani, and has been indulging in anti India sloganeering. They also said that 4 Pakistanis rounded up along with the Indians were treated with courtesy and offered refreshments, unlike the Indians. Also, Malaysia just became the chairman of the Organization of Islamic Conference. You still dont believe it's possible there's a religious angle? You must be blind.

'JNUwallahs'

Dear Mr Srinivasan,
It ill behoves you to spout such venom against communities in general - "JNUwallahs", Muslims, Christians. You sounds quite like the rabid hindu fanatic that is portrayed in the world media - as you yourself pointed out. With such publications, you are probably helping their cause.
Hinduism is a religion of peace, which does not mean Hindus should take atrocities like Godhara sitting down or that they should resort to mass murder like they did in Gujarat. Gandhi showed another way and it would serve us well to remember that - especially the educated Indians. It is for us to show the way. The uneducated do not know any better. You should.

rajeev is just doing unto the jnuwallahs what they have been doing all these years. they (just look at bidwai's rantings) have demonised anybody who as much as dares to identify himself as a hindu. if you are so concerned about decorum, why don't you ask the bidwais and the dsouzas and the arundhati roys and the anita prataps to cut down their hindu bashing too? otherwise you yourself are clearly one sided.

This shows the weakness in our Media. The media should be strong enough to publicize in the favour of India and its people. But, the Govt. has not allowed to do that. Look at what happened to Tehelka.com. It is all the fault of our Govt. and nobody else.

One more great article...
by Ravi G on Mar 18, 2003 11:34 PM

Mr Srinivasan, it is a pleasure reading your article!! Unfortunately, many of our politicians do not think along the same lines. When you have doctrines like the Gujral doctrine where you do two good deeds to your enemies for every kick recieved, no wonder India and Indians are treated with disdain abroad!!
India should no longer think like a weak country, and should not hesitate to talk tough. Only then will be taken seriously. Why should we tolerate when legal law-abiding Indians are mistreated by the law enforcement agencies of other countries? This will only encourage other countries to follow suit, as they think they can get away with it.
In India, secularism means being anti-hindu and pro-minorities, and not equality for all relegions. Not only politicians, but even mainline national newspapers define secularism that way. How many newspapers have dealt with the persecution of minorities in Bangladesh, or the plight of kashmiri pandits? It is rather shameful that the plight of illegal pakistanis in US gets more news than plight of hindus in bangladesh!! The population of minorities in both Bangladesh and Pakistan has reduced by a very large percentage, whereas those in India has increased proportinately. Will any newspaper point that out? No, because you cannot appear to talk about plight of hindus even if they are at the receiving end as otherwise, you will be a "Communal newspaper". You are not supposed to talk about growing number of illegal madrasas at the borders, not talk about the illegal conversions being induced through sewing machines and cash etc, because we are secular!!
When a group of VHP men attacked a conversion site in Mysore and displayed the anti-hindu, hindu-bashing material ti the media people, the major newspapers just reported that "VHP men attack alleged conversion ceremony", while no mention is made of the anti-hinduism pamphlets, except in a few local language newspapers. This is balanced coverage by our media!! Why don't these people try to promote their relegion without bad mouthing other relegions?
The more liberty these people have, the more they try their best to harm India's interest!!! And these people are the true secular patriotic card carrying Indians that we are supposed to thank!!

At last, a comprehensive answer to the great Old Left secularists, modernists, progressives, thinkers etc. etc. etc.

These so-called Indian intellectuals, who never fail to win some prizes from some obscure institutes from the Western world in general, have no idea how much damage they do to India at the international level. They provide perfect fodder to western journalists who haven't the slightest clue about the intricacies and under-currents in a country of 1 Billion people and are probably thrilled that they are quoted "globally" and are in line for one more prize. As far as I can see, to even compare India with its neighbors on secularism etc is a shame. I am proud of one simple fact. 50 years ago, a Yusuf Khan had to take the name of Dilip Kumar to gain acceptance. Today, a Dilip Kumar can become Rehman and have absolutely no problems in becoming one of the most celebrated figures in India. The great secularists will never bring this out.

So I suppose by building the temple at Ayodhya it will scare the Chinese. We are so busy fighting and destroying ourselves that every Tom Dick and Hari also wants to take a swipe at us. So let us stop blaming these Toms for our mess.

A suggestion to Rediff on this article
by Uday Kulkarni on Mar 18, 2003 11:18 PM

A good article giving insight of the politics and religious background of Malaysian ethos in dealing with indians. But isn't this article similar to the news items that appear regularly on Pak News websites advising what India should be doing or what Hindus should be doing ? How can such a nicely written article help build relations with Malaysia ?

If we as Indians want to prosper, we need to take these view points across to the world. We need to get across the correct message to the South Asian neighbours of India who are small countries with limited infrastructure and majority of the press controlled by Islamic fundamentalists. We need to let them know about the true picture of Indian Muslims in India and not the abberated versions of some political parties and their ideologies.

I have a suggestion here as follows :

In the internet era where the access to information is so easy and fast, the above article needs to be a bit refined to reduce anti malaysian tone and get it published in Malaysian publications like Malaysia Times or Malaysian National News Agency- BERNAM; under an exchange of publishing an article explaining Malaysian view point on rediff or Times of India . If this is made possible, we will defeat China because they will not be able to match upto the ndian free democracy, free press and free ideologies which the Islamic world is yearning for with Americans and European nations going anti Islamic. This is the time when they will buy our ideologies

Once again a GOOD ARTICLE .

Hi Rajeev

I appreciate you writing this article about the recent ill treatment of Indian IT professionals in Malaysia.

India (and its government) should voice out its opinions and take a tuff stand against such incidents. I hope one voice has all the power to make a huge difference.

Thanks though

regards

Srikanth
