there is a big anti-mani ratnam group, who are hell bent on putting down Raavan. These people would not be so much up in arms if Raavan had been directed by some other person.
This is typical to the Indian mentality - grab chance to put down anyone successful. Probably they were all boiling inside when Mani's successes were paraded during this film's promos. Once they got a sense that this movie could be criticized (probably a tad fair in some areas) they are all over the place.
These are the same set of people criticizing Sachin Tendulkar because he can't win all the matches :)
Don't get me wrong - Raja Sen doesn't belong to this category. He is senseless and a paid by SRK to put down all his competitions.

looki...u r dumb....or u dont understand cinema. there was no charector which people could relate to except ravi kissan and priyami. pathetic experience and abhisheks charectors miserably felt to connect. nothing with pulling ratnam down. same people hailed ratnam fr Yuva,Guru. i was looking forward to this movie and it was as pathetic as akshay kumars kambakt ishq (well at least before gng to kambakt ishq we clearly knew it was gona be pathetic)

In the process u cant let down anything. Right Yuva was the pathetic but Guru was a good movie and so does Ravan.

so Mr. Intelligent,
I am dumb because you know everybody in the world and can say categorically that there is no personality like Beera or Dev or Raghini.. or for that matter anybody in the movie except for Ravi and Priyamani.. right?
Ok mr. know all - even if I agree with you, Shouldn't Mani have the creative liberty to create a character?
What is this criticism for the sake of criticism?.. I saw many aspects in this movie which was novel, original and creative - which makes me think this is a worthwhile effort.
You are the typical case of arm chair critic, who parrots what others say and doesn't think for yourself and you are calling me dumb.. :O

Raavan was far from great, but was definitely not unforgivably boring. Whatever the self-declared intellectuals on this forum who 'understand cinema' are declaring. And maniratnam has even managed to highlight the atrocities suffered by poor tribals at the hands of our police and authorities. This review is far too cynical, and Raja Sen's potshots at the movie are not going to take away from the fact that by Bollywood standards (which are admittedly not very high), the movie is definitely above average. At least some thinking has gone into it, even if the end result is not a masterpiece, which is much more than you can say for most Indian movies.

basically the characters do not impress.
beera is portrayed as tghe wronged side. but hwat has he done to have 63 cases and the police force against him?
the police force is ruthless and do not mind victimising innocent women.
the kidnapped woman is never in danger of being raped because the captor's leader has decided not to harm her for his "own reasons".
so no character to root for. nothing that gets us involved except priyayamani's cruel fate.
and also no thrills or suspense.
without emotional involvement or interesting events, nothing is great.
its not as boring as raja sen put it. that's false. considerign the cr*p that others in india come up with.
just mediocre creative work by the script writer.
and whether the director put enuf thought into engaging the audience(his main job) instead of just giving a simplistic revisionist intrepretation of an epic.

abhishek is a non-actor and non star. only parents and ash propped him up. but a dead horse will stay dead no matter how much u flog it !!
I dont know why ppl pour wrong comments on the movie. Hindi version is good and tamil version is excellent. Kudos to the entire team!!! The story is well known but the way its told seems different and the stunning visuals of nature and music keeps you mum.
