oscar misconception
by sunil sidharthan on Jan 26, 2009 06:06 PM  | Hide replies

There is a misconception regarding oscars given to hollywood movies and oscar given to foreign films.I suggest my friends to watch the oscar nominated foreign films and then wonder why indian movies miss oscars. Some of the Iranian, chinese and french movies are far better than hollywood movies.Only such movies get recognition. So whenever we miss oscars just watch the foreign movie which won the oscar and then argue.Slumdog millionaire may not be the greatest movie of the century but it is a strong contender when compared with other hollywood movies released.Dont tell me about Dark Knight. It is just a commercial movie which has good direction, some interesting stunt sequences and a gr8 perfomance by late Heath Ledger.Dont compare Slumdog Millionaire with Indian movies.Slumdog Millionaire is a hollywood movie with India as the backdrop.

Slumdog M will be better than other hollywood movies, that doen not mean it is great. There are many indian movies far better than this. Please try to watch india film festivals and then argue. Why these movies are not even going for nomination??Just because they are 'BLOODY INDIAN FILMS'

good movie but not a great movie

slumdog M is a good movie but not a great movie. It just like any other potboilers of bollywood movies, made so many times by our bollywood directors.Just bcoz it has been directed by a british director and the movie has been nominated in the oscars does not make it a great movie. The movie is once a watch. It has no repitation value. The movie has been making waves in the west just bcoz danny boyle has shown them the poverty, hungry and naked street childrens and of course taj mahal. This is what the west think about india. They think taj mahal and slums is the real india. I m happy for rahman being nominated for the jai ho in the oscars but honestly rahman has done some brilliant work in the past than jai ho.

I agree, the movie seem to strive on deprevation of indian people. Its surely a representation of india's socio-economical situation, which was depicted in stark masala form, which ofcource we should recognize and accept. Just hope people around world understand that its just one small aspect of Life in India which needs improvement and will change We have more that what was shown.

Other aspect....

I know there are many undesirable things happening in our country but by including them in a movie, we actually making people used to those things. We need to show these aspects of our society as offense and not as a part and parcel of our life.

PARADIGM SHIFT

HELLO ALL THE READERS
First try to erase the news about awards to SDM. Now see the movie. This movie has lots of good points. Struggle of a small boy. Direction...etc etc.. BUT....BUT... What message you get when you walk out of movie hall is?????????????????? What things keeps on running in your thoughts??????????? what indirect subconscious message enters our brain???????????? FILTH POVERTY GUTTERS CHILD EXPLOITATION SEX BHAILOG... EVEN BAD PART IN CHARACTER OF ANIL KAPOOR GIVING A WRONG HINT (THIS WAS NOT EXPECTED IN MOVIE!)..
Getting award is really great achievement. But this movie is a brain child of outsider about India.. It is English movie dubbed in Hindi. Agreed our politicians are not doing any thing for the slums... agreed its a reality.. But do we need to enlarge it? And enlarging it will help to reduce it? Also why showing the Internal problem to other countries in Glorified way? I feel its our own foolishness that we Indians are happy for getting award for this movie in west which is showing negative things about our country. If you think about the performances, no doubt they deserve what ever the nominations etc etc.. BUT THE SUBJECT PROBABLY HARMS INDIA MORE THAT IT IS GOING TO BENEFIT.
I STRONGLY RECOMMEND ALL THE READERS TO SEE THIS MOVIE AND DECIDE HOW YOU FEEL AFTER THE SHOW.

Bang On Piyush!!!!!!
You are absolutely correct!!!! These westerners never gave any nominations - awards to Indian films which were much better than Slumdog....(Rang De Basanti, Taare Zameen Par, AAMIR, A Wednesday) because these films show the middle and upper middle class India , an educated India, which cannot be digested by them ......they feel good only when India is shown asa land of slums , filth and all ugly and dirty things.....the makers of slumdog are too clever.....just to pacify Indians , they took Indian actors(Irfan,Anil) or actors from Indian origin(Dev & Freida) .......I strongly beleive that AAMIR and A WEDNESDAY were far better movies than this slumdog.....and all of us educated Indians shud request to BAN this movie.....Now I know why Danny Boyle in all his interviews said that "He was not sure how would the Indian people react to the movie" because he knows that he has glorified only the FILTH of India.........afterall he is a britisher.......the people who ruled India for 100's of years , they know the Indian people's psychology....yesterday I saw on NDTV 24*7 a talk show involving all slumdog cast....and Barkha Dutt , ANil looked so stupid when they smiled at that Patel boy's statement that "My mom was running all over the place(mumbai) behind me, with a mosquito repellent " .......

personally agree to your point.
I also fail to see why we should give any impotrance to oscars.
It's a white supremacist racist award. If TZP, Lagaan, Apaharan, Swades and movies like those cannot get noticed, I dont know why we even care for them.
I think our media has to stop licking western boots. This is so sick, Indian media just dont have any self-respect. It's disgusting to say the least.
And why do Bollywood producers not make movies on our own counterparts of Erin Brockovich - our water warriors, our rural innovators, our past engineers, sportsmen, craftsmen? Chak de was such a hit. If the right story is picked up, then we get our counterpart of Million Dollar Baby - not one but hundreds of stories out there. Even Munnabhai was good.
Dhyan Chand, MAK Pataudi (one eye, batsman, better player of fast bowling than two eyed others), the spin quartet, Paaji, Dada, "My Finest Hour", 1983. (Not movies on current players, they will get totally spoilt...)
All really good subjects for movies.
Ancient Indian science and engineering (plenty of Science fiction ), social reformers (personality films), Akbar and Birbal, and even before that. Ashok was a sick action-porno movie, forget it.
You can also make movies about each of Mumbai's professions and show rags-to-riches stories in each industry. From catering to IT to medicine. So many rags-to-riches stories not involving going to America. Guru was just one movie in that category.
Filmwale toh so rahe hain.

Is the purpose of making Slumdog Millionaire fullfilled
by chandu on Jan 25, 2009 09:06 PM

What is the purpose of making the movie or writing a book. Making money or winning the Awards. No the true purpose is making people aware of the reality and solving the issue raised in the movie.

The filmi people has done thier job.

Now it is our turn to make the Slum people progress. To educate them. To bring them int mainstream of the society. And helping the orphan kids like Latika, Jamal, Salim n't fall the prey of the villian of the society.

Because the Developed India means n't only the development of the handfull of the people but the development of the whole Indians.

Hope that will happen soon.
