Where is the SOUL?
by Janish Murgai on Jul 05, 2008 06:21 PM

Films, when first made were the purpose of entertainment and slowly some film makers with a conscience started making films to get a social message across. A new breed of film makers has emerged who make the so called realistic cinema. These directors somehow forget realism behind if and when required. 'Aamir' falls in this category, the film's soul is not in the right place. The film is neither an 'ENTERTAINING THRILLER', nor sending a 'SOCIAL MESSAGE' or 'SHOWCASING REALISM'. As Saisuresh Sivaswamy points out there are far too many cinematic liberties taken. The film is well made, but I don't for once beleive that a majority of the minority communities in our 'AMAZING NATION' breed hatred. I wish these 'FILM MAKERS' who wish to make realistic cinema get their facts right first.

saisuresh swami made me uncomfortble

I feel the same wauy reading the column. The unfortunate part is 'Saisuresh' is typical secular type who doesn't see minority community's silence on Amarnath and other places where Hindus are targetted. Now the message come across is is that everyone knows this pseudo seculars but is silent...Typical trait of pseudo seculars is that truth make him uncomfortable and here author admitted so now he will instigate minority community to oppose the film rather then accept the truth and shut up.

i am surprised at the mention of amarnath in ur response to a film review.
what do u know about amarnath??? what makes u think that hindus were targetted at amarnath? if u think that revoking the order transferring land to SASB is a communal thing then better check ur facts mister.

A good actor in the horizon!
by Risi I on Jul 05, 2008 04:50 PM

The highlight of the movie is Rajeev Khandelwal. The movie gave him ample scope to showcase a range of emotions and as a viewer one could really feel his pain and helplessness. Overall, the movie was good but not great and the last moments of the movie dragged a way too much. Nevertheless a very different and strong movie. By the way, his voice is somewhat similar to Jimmy Shergill another good actor who has qualities to do intense scenes but has underachieved so far.

Yeah they should have added an item number of the great overactor Shahrukh Khan with filthy motormouth Raki Sawant along with an assembly line brigade of Bollywood’s who’s who like muscular Sunil Shetty, gorgeous Tushar Kapoor, national talent Dino Morea, flat face Kareena and all.

by Girish on Jul 05, 2008 03:56 PM

get rid of this kid-glove approach towards muslims. look what the muslims did in kashmir. the muslims dont' want to give any space to non-muslims and they want all freedom. they are rightly portrayed in the film

Following hindi movies did full justice to the topic of minorities in India.
1) Garam Hawa
2) Salime Langde Pe Mat Ro
3) Maachis
Although there are several movies made on the topic of terrorism or state of minorities Muslims/Sikhs etc but none can claim to have done justice.
When you take a serious topic then honesty is the first requirement. Films like Dil Se.. Roja Bombay were quite well made but they lacked soul.
No doubt Amir is a well shot movie but again it is devoid of any rationale.
Fanatic should be shown interacting with educated , devout , rational , progressive , practicing muslim and not some one who is muslim for the namesake. Same holds true for any community. You can show a drunkard hindu beating wife for dowry or something else having illicit relationships and then conclude that all Hindu males in India are like that and justify their wives being lesbians in movies like Fire.
For every Dongri / Nagpada / Bhendi Bazaar there is Sion / Ambedkar Nagar / Dharavi etc. Not only in Bombay but everywhere in India.
The doctrine of terrorists are born due to injustice doesn't make sense anymore until it is shown convincingly.
Movies can not be made to educate people regarding realities as they wont earn money. With media/news overdoze there is crimnal neglect of thought provoking documentaries by Indians. But everyone needs entertainment and hence even daily news has been reduced to nautanki.

agreed....there r 4 kinds of directors 1st like m.s sathyu who made garam hawa with intellectual perspective, then come 2nd types e.g govind nihalani who makes film with lot of heart & a mix of idealism with realism....tamas , vijeta , drohkaal & dev prove this...even mani ratnam belong to this 2nd type as showed in his bombay, roja & dil se...but then come the third type of directors who are psuedo intellect with limited capacities...like mira nair ,ashutosh gowariker etc...they are lucky but then they desrve it as their heart is still in right place.....but what to doo with the fourth type of directors who breed out of frustations & try to sound different by seeking negative perspective of a subject & adapting to sensationalism & controversies...deepa mehta has excelled in this type by making 1947 the earth...where sex became more important to show pangs of partition. anyway when we discuss of this type firther we see anurag kashyap & his croonies not behind.....chahe iske liye inhe sandaas aur whan padi shit dikhane ki zaroorat bhi pad jaye

dear amit jain....
VEry good categorization but it holds good only for the first two categories....
I dont know why viewers like you fail to understand that films are not made to send a message across everytime. A film is an attempt to tell a story-and if that involves showing shit or a sex scene then so be it....
1947 Earth was essentially a story of those three characters in the setting of the partition...Their relationship was a tool used to narrate those times...After it was Real People whom the partition affected and this waz the interpretation of what the partition did to that particular set of people...No point remaking Gandhi & Bhagat Singh again & again. Also 1947 earth toook off from the book "icecandyman" so I think there is nothing wrong in staying true to ur inspiration which happend to be a book this time....
Also if you have a problem with unnecessary things then I think you should just throw mani ratnam out of the second category in put him as the leader in the fourth category..
Why? well you had a problem with sex scenes in 1947 earth and a scene where shit is shown in toilets in aamir...then how come you do not have a problem with shahrukh dancin on top of a train in dil se...or he and manisha koirala breaking into a dream dance sequence in Ladakh!!!
I think that is a lot "shittier" than 1947earth or aamir...
