Aamir has a Strong Message. That should be welcome
by Imran Quraishi on Jul 01, 2008 08:54 PM  | Hide replies

Firstly, A great movie, well directed, well written and remarkable performances.

You need to identify one clear message from this film:

An average muslim of India gets scrutinised or has the fear of undergoing one in some form or the other. Yet the confidence is building as the youth is creating their own future over a period of time.

The love for the country holds good equally for all the citizens irrespective of their caste, creed and religion. So the love of the motherland cannot and should not be questionable for anyone.

Time and again muslims have to prove their patriotism for their motherland.

So its a strong message and a good message that needs to be welcomed and practiced.

"Muslims need not prove their love for their country time and again, it has been there and will always be there"

You made a good point. Unfortunately the ghost of partition still haunts our generation and hence the virulence of suspicion. However good movies likes this helps everyone to break the baggage of stereotyping.

I doubt it Quraishi.. religion is first and country is second for muslims. If they are so patriotic and treat this as their mother land, then india would not have been divided in to 3 parts and Pakis, banglas trying to destabilize india. There are very few muslims who treat country first and religion 2nd. Muslims in India are easily vulnerable to ant-india elements. Look what is happening in kashmir, the muslims there are full of hatred towards india. What is the guarantee that if muslims grow in numbers in other parts of india, they will do same as they are doing in kashmir and try to divide the country again.? People will always look at them with suspicion as the ghost of partition and killing of lakhs of indians is behind them..

Some light on this.....
I agree for Muslims it is religion first and country second and this is true if the country is India, US or Saudi.
If Pak was formed bcz of only religious reason then we would not have had Bangladesh being splitted up from Pak.
Kashmiris if you know have always followed sufism, where they are more inclined to music got to dargah, they are not the ones whom you call the fundamentalist, what has happened in kashmir is bcz of the diff between Indian govt and people out there and ofcourse Pak takes advantage of it but this is all for politics and power, definately not for religion.

I totally agree with u. I have not come across any muslim who is not patriotic, who does not treat India as motherland and mother.
Ofcourse there would be some, but in small numbers.

True... but you need to understand the real culprits. The muslims suffer becos of some people in their own community. Forget India, asian muslims are scrutinised more in US and UK. And we cant blame them.. how could they realise the true intent of a muslim person? If they be easy on all of them, who knows one of them may cause killings of hundreds. I understand the inconvinience but then imagine the inconvinience the world is having becos of this violence. The discrimination was not there before this violence which proves that nobody wanted such racism but situations forced the change

Imran, I totally agree with u. Muslims are as much a part of India as Hindus & they do NOT need to prove their patriotism. I just wish the rest of the country accepted this.

Why have you not said anything about "MAIN HOON NA"... depicting a hindu terrorist slaying pakistanis and interupting Indo pak peace. That was a bullshit script for sure from Farah Khan.

Aamir's story has been picked up different english movies, main theme being taken from the movie TELEPHONE BOOTH.That doesnt mean, the film is bad,but then..its good but i didnt like the climax at all.Climax was moreover like, the director wanted to finish off the story somehow.I dont feel that was the climax the scripter or the director intended to do.

U are totally wrong. It is a remake of a movie called "CAVITE" released in 2005. But one thing you are right Bollywood lacks originality. Neverthless we both agree it was a good movie.

hey risi...they showed this movie to the CAVITE director and their team before releasing it. Those guys had absolutely no problem with it...Both movies share only the same treatment..the premise and the contexts are completely different and hence there is no point in blemishing a wonderful film by calling it "Unoriginal"....

It is a matter of perspective but I still hold Bollywood lacks originality. Do you know the hit movie "Munna Bhai" is a ripoff of "Patch Adams." Although I admit the premise and the contexts was somewhat different. Wana more "Kabul Express" is again a ripoff of a Bosnian movie "No Man's Land" which pipped Lagaan for the Oscar but director "Kabir Khan" has the audacity to say it is based on real life character after accepting the National Award. Originality is totally alien to Bollywood.

What a waste of a movie! i also saw the movie on the weekend and i feel it ahd all the cliches, tried and tested snatches of movies. The protagonist is muslim, educated, refuses to side with the extremist ideologies and sacrifices himself for a noble cause.a Jihad that he was a part of but one that just stopped short of an all consuming fire.Every part of the movie is littered with slow moving sequences, a deliberate art house experimental cinema look.there is a lot of unnecessary intellectual masturbation with character close ups and dim lighting(mani ratnam how we miss you!)..the movie seems an exercise in slow motion.Every scene took you to the foregone conclusion that this would all end up in a bomb blast...to show this predictable end, the director has wasted his as well as the viewer's time.We Indians act in extremes. We either cheer extravagant, ridiculous cinema and make it a hit or praise any cinema that borders on the so called intellectual kind as great piece of sensitive cinema...i think the only saving grace was Rajeev Khandelwal who played this subdued character who finds himself get impotent and meek to react against the fundamentalist forces...I think i watched this movie with a lot of critical acclaim; baggage ...and perhaps ended upa t least sitting through the movie...otherwise...would have walked out of the movie hall or burned the CD/DVD or indulged in some other fundamentalist step...all in all, such a huge disappointment!

Well I was going through your comments with real interest when you started with the first line "what a waste of a movie!" I really liked the movie and hence I was curious to know the perspective of a intellect like you who understands Cinema but you really disappointed me when you mentioned Mani Ratnam in such high esteem who I strongly believe is just a overrated director. Now I wanna say your comments does not hold water because it is a matter of perspective. Anway I got to your class and taste. Go and watch a Rajni movie.

Hey Risi dude what a good answer to this guy pravin nair....
U r absolutely right when u say that mani-ratnam is a highly over-rated director especially after Guru - everyone should simply agree with that...
What also amazes me about Pravin's comment here is that he says it had all the "cliches"...
Comeon man which Indian movie shows the protagonist killing himself in the end!!!That is definitely not a cliche for sure...

Secondly what u r criticizing in terms of close-ups I think you need to watch the movie again with your spectacles on dude!!!! Rarely we get this kind of "In the Space" cinematography in Indian movies...the last one I can think off was "Black Friday" directed by Anurag Kashyap...who was assisted by the director of Aamir in black friday.
You could have said something more meaningful if u really wanted to criticize man...When u r making the two arguments of "Cliche" & "Camerawork" - it just shows that it really was a waste that people like you went to watch the movie. You should sit back and watch some ManiRatnam movie with exotic song sequences in Ladakh or on top of a train.... U will love it dude and in your language u will then not have wasted your time!!!!

Dear mithun your last line regarding south indian movies esp. the term 'in your language....' is quite embarassing. Don't forget that Many south indian 90's movies are running successfully after remaked into Hindi in 2006-08, ie. after a gap of almost 15 years.
my intention is Don't under estimate anything.
Regarding Maniratnam Don't forget BOMBAY which create huge controversy and a big hit at that time.

I Appreciate a Movie like Aamir, I think it is the Best Movie of the Year, Rajeev Khandelwal should win "The Best Actor" in all Award Function(Only if Lobbying Morons like Karan Johar and SRK dont play Politics).

Those who Appreciate Aamir should also Appreciate "Sardar Patel" which had Paresh Rawal playin one of the "Best Roles in his Career".

Then we will know which Psycho talks about Actors and Movies without Including Religion...........................
