While it is great that India finally achieved something significant as far as modern infrastructure is concerned it is still behind other developing nations and should really think of taking it to a new level to celebrate. China has already made more that 9 Cable stay and Iron arc bridges which has set new benchmark internationally. India talk about making Mumbai, India's Shanghai, but reality is that it will take Mumbai another decade to be where shangahi is right now if they continue to build at the pace at which this sea link.

Why don't they de-congest the cities in India.Mumbai,Delhi,Chenna,Bangalore,Hyderabad
are all so congested, they should develop other cities as well,it is only then that these cities would revert back to livable state.I cannot travel in Bangalore without a traffic jam,I cannot board the local train in Mumbai even at 10 PM at Kurla.Where the hell are we living ? What infrastructure and for whom ?

Yes. You are right as far as the common man is concerned. Unfortunately, in India the common man can still not afford a car. But my friend if your look at it without a jaundiced eye you will find that so many four wheelers will be off the regular roads. This will mean more space for people like us. Those who can pay will only use the link. We can travel in the BEST service which, incidentally, I consider as one of the best and cheapest and in the world.

WHERE IS MY FOOT PATH TO WALK??
Huh...In Mumbai..How many people walk on the footpath, the number would be in your fingers. And if you have footpaths they are meant for hawkers...
And then we call SPIRIT of MUMBAI....yaks
Above sentence is picked from the books of Truth.

what a waste of time
by don b on Jul 01, 2009 11:22 PM  | Hide replies

i am surprised that people in India feel that traffic is going to be be eased in mumbai for the north south travel . just looking at the photos, its clear that there is massive congestion at either end.

the reason for this epitomises the typical india attitude.
1. No planning - HCCL build the bridge.. but obviously there was no thought given to traffic planning by city planners/engineers. I wonder if such a thing exists in india. another example is mumbai-pune expressway. its a 6 lane road (3 on either side) but the 6 lane road starts 30KM from pune and ends 30 odd KM from mumbai. once the expressway stretch is complete, the lanes narrow and the road sufaces sucks , so rather than increasing the lanes as the metro areas get closers, the lanes are actually remain the same or even less !!! in the US, its exactly the opposite..
2. politicians do not give a crap : they must have made crores as commisions from HCCL. they dont give a damn about people and society in general. no politician must have given a thought on whether this project will work or not.

3. indian ppl - we don't follow the rules of the road , we are totally indisciplined while driving... cutting lanes, breaking traffic signals.. etc..
overall, after few years.. there will be no maintenance on this road, walkers and beggers will infest it and there will be total anarchy.. our ppl dont change.. this has happened time and again.. so to even be talking optimistic would be understatment.

You know what. I agree with you. Especially the second point. Politicians and particularly, babus made a lot of dough in this project. I was associated with it for a short while and am privy to some of the dealings that took place. But all said and done, hats off to HCCL for completing the project. Had any other agency taken it up they would have wound up because of the bleeding they would have been subjected to. The system is entirely f...ked up and you know it as well as the next man on the street. There may be problems but it is none of HCCL's doing. They had a defined strech and they completed it. The stupid planners should have thought of the snarls that are taking place.
