Bandra Worli Sea Link
by DilipVishnu maydeo on Jul 01, 2009 10:19 PM  | Hide replies

Just because we can build big ,should we ?
We have incurred a huge environmental cost by reclaiming the sea for the cause of a few motorists.Tonnes of Iron and Concrete to defile the sea. What a show of strength and power and pyrotechnics.Stop raping the sea or we will have to face Tsunamis and Hurricane. The development model has failed .Mumbai is the example of that failure.Cant hide squalor and filth by cosmetic facades.Restoring the glory of Mithi should have done before that opulent bridge. An inland waterway along the Mithi would ease out the traffic at a very low cost without floods and waterlogging.

The bridge will be a perpetual traffic jam in Mumbai, bcz it is NOT the bridge that can solve the traffic problem, but traffic regulations, which is missing in this country.

Can't agree more on the inland waterway you said in your comment. Sadly though the environmental impacts which should have taken precedence to all other factors was trashed. At times I wonder what exactly does it take for the environmental clearence. Do they have atleast a procedure like a standard operational manual to clear projects. I also wonder about the quality of people we have at the helm of things in the MoE.

Naked and ugly political contests to hijack every pubic project for elections became commonplace. Pure 'grab your slot' mentality.

Not just the sea link. If you look at the flyovers built, every second flyover could easily be avoided and saved thousands of crores of public money. But then there are huge moolah involved. Contractors, engineers, political funds , realty mafia - not to mention naming ceremonies and other rhetoric theatrics.

One fine morning we will wake up to the crude truth that we killed mother nature in India and the killer is political fraternity. By then it will be too late. It is only a matter of time that mother nature showed her discontent.

Planning
by Bharat Bhooshan on Jul 01, 2009 10:14 PM  | Hide replies

There was no planning at all.

No effective traffic management system after the end of the bridge as a signal is supposed to come up at a T-junction in a residential area. Also once traffic is offloaded off the bridge it moves onto a 6 lane road however, two lanes of this road go towards car parking as several buildings on the road do not have the provision for cars to be parked.
The Bridge opens out in front of a school which has students coming in at 8:00am and 11:00am (Peak Traffic Time), no provisions have been made for it.
A party hall is also just about 100 meters from the end of the bridge along Worli Sea Face Road which does not have an underground car park or entrance within the building as a result traffic is forced onto the main road which makes just about 2 lanes for travel possible at lunch time and the entire night after 7pm.
Worli Sea Face also offloads onto a road where a overpass had been built originally for the old plan of the bridge to move traffic but now it will create a huge problem as the cars must move below it where only 4 lanes are available. Also on either side of this road, there is a temple (Markandeshwar Mandir) and a shopping mall (Atria Shopping Mall). So the question of eased off traffic is totally nonexistent.
The toll for using the bridge is currently expected to be aro

by rajeev rege on Jul 01, 2009 10:12 PM

Now politicians will think of building a Bridge over the present Bridge to solve traffic jam problems.

idiots did not think about how to get off the bridge
by Shekar T on Jul 01, 2009 10:04 PM

Build a bridge and then think about how to get off it. Was there reservations in the team that built this. The bridge is designed by politicians, who have no brains.

Now Watch Out For These Rackets
by Bharat Bhushan on Jul 01, 2009 09:58 PM

At both ends, a clique of taxi drivers will corner all the slots to make an easy killing.
It happens at the airport. It happens at the
Churchgate and VT share-a-cab stand. Only those who are 'approved' members of this clique are allowed to operate, any outsider
is shoved off, quite literally.
