I think you forget that a lot of people here have appeared in a lot of competitive exams. IAS is just one of those exams. Please keep this in mind. And if you think you are overworked in Public Sector, please join the Private Sector. A brilliant person who has appeared in the IAS exam should have no problem in that .... and you also get the salary that you want.

Do not think those who are not in the Public Sector are people who could not get in. Most don't want to get in.

The Babus are the real rulers of this country. They appear both in policy making and execution. Netas are responsible for all that they do.It is the prerogative of netas to do legislation and babus to broden it and execute. Now, since netas are hell bent on vote politics they making the policies to suit their nature. The financial freedom is not given to the babus hence always for anything they have stand infront of the people representative. Let me tell you one truth, India was better ruled between 1975-77 in its life time. It is because of no authoritarian rule during that period. There is psychological study which says that authoritarian rule model is best for India and not democracy. Anyway, coming back to babus, every year at the max of 100 are chosen from a lot of 4 lakh candidates, the ratio of 0.00025!!! through a tough competition for which they work for morethan 2-3 years. This babu is responsible for betterment of 10lakh people in is constituency. He works normally 24 hours day (yes more than anyone who work in a private company) because he is involved in CIVIL SERVICES. You cannot compare it with any other competitive exam which has got only one paper and 2-3 rounds interviews. Finally for anything there are 1000's of seats or jobs for which success ratio in any worst case is not less than 0.05. Babu has to travel a lot to make sure govt policies are implemented and some one has to serve him during that time but a pvt employee can stay in a 5* hotel at comp money.
beware of this dangerous breed. it is not only spoiling present but generations to come by there iinefficent management of govt. schemes designed out of hard earned tax payers money. Give them pay hikes as much as they want with only conditions of contract jobs.

IAS officer is an important person as he takes decisions which affect the way of life of country's citizens. its very important that these IAS persons do not feel inferior and should be paid at par with private sector employees for a very simple reason, just as how private sector expects quality of service and output from the employee same way the govt. can start expecting the same from IAS officer if they want pay rise...by all means give them the pay rise but I sincerely hope we can expect good service from the IAS. Also the point the HR guy makes in the article is so stupid, even if the rent of staying in the house which the IAS stays is 10lakh what is the use! I am sure IAS would be very happy staying in a Rs.50K house with the other Rs1lakh as increase in its monthly income he can save to his daily materialistic needs like any other human on this earth.
RE:Increase in pay for IAS may be needed

Salary must be paid based on the responsibilities. what these babus do is known everywhere. including falling on the MP feet. if they do not get motivated and work they should leave the services. threre are plenty of people who do these kind of clarical job. these babus do not worth anything. Big burden on the tax payers.

I agree with you provided the law should be amanded that a corrupt babu should be hanged immediatly after detection.
It is not a question of whether additional perks and salaries are to be given to the Babus, whose only "contribution" is enormous loss to the Public Sector Enterprises. The only question to be addressed is whether we need IAS Officers in the first place. Nowhere in the world do we see such services, which are the remnants of British imperialism. Besides, the IAS officers are corrupt and thoroughly incompetent. It is better to recruit experts based on open advertisement to man top posts.
RE:We Don't Need IAS!
by PAL on Oct 11, 2007 11:55 AM
We do not need IAS officers of present lot. Their job should not be permanent they should be hired and fired.
even if they are put at the same level as private sector salaries, they would seek (demand) favours for international trips and long distance journeys. today, the salary what they get is a net savings for them since all other expenses (including diapers and condoms) are given to them free of cost. If they are to be to be at par with private sector executives, they should be falling under the executive compensation (as per the companies act) so that their perquisites get limited to 10% of salary and also taxed. Like in the private sector, they should also be made accountable/answerable with goals and 6 monthsly performance reviews etc. which would make most of them lose their jobs.
RE:Pay them in Oct-2007 - half of them are eliminated by the year end
by PAL on Oct 11, 2007 11:57 AM
They should not given any automatic promotions. should be fired for inefficiency. are you babus ready for that.
Late Rajiv Gandhi said, for every 100 paise spent by Govt only 16 paise reaches people.Guess where does 84 paise go. Do you really need pets called Babus.
RE:cost of Babus
by Balasubramaniam R on Oct 11, 2007 12:13 PM
Sorry I think you have a wrong idea. There are a number of vacant posts in Public sector undertakings and these posts are advertised for. But you find that there are no takers because of the comparatively poor compensation package. Further an executive in govt. does not have the same freedom he enjoys in the crporate structure. In govt you have to work with the team provided to you whereas in progressive pvt corporates an executive can build a team all by himself.
I think the Babu's can be paid performance based incentive. All the perk's which they enjoy should be evaluated and the value should be added to their salary. And all those who are non-performing should be penalised. There is no harm in paying them if they can bring in discipline, reduce corruption and improve efficiency in govt operations.
RE:perform or perish
by Balasubramaniam R on Oct 11, 2007 12:16 PM
very difficult to quantify performance because of the nature of work. it will lead to futher corruption.
Late Rajiv Gandhi said, only 16 paise reaches to people for every 100 paise spent by the govt. Now its anybody's guess where does 84 paise go. So the cost of pets called Babus are your imaginations. Think.
