what a truth.
by SVK on Apr 13, 2006 07:26 PM

A guy like me who studied all his life to get best education was restrained from getting into IIT's just because I belong to general merit quota.
well people will never realize value of merit they are losing out.
Pretty sure millions will be cursing those people who made these laws just for the sake of getting votes.

Those who care all OBC's et al. make reservation based on economic status. This will finally enable you to reach real goals of social equality.

Merit should come before caste
by Shravan Reddy on Apr 13, 2006 06:42 PM

I completely agree with this. People should realize that by making these reservations they are only going to prolong these people's miseries and at the same time weaken our country from the inside. As such we have enough enemies outside our borders. Our political leaders should make sure they are not creating new enemies to deal with inside our borders.

Caste vs merit
by AYON on Apr 13, 2006 05:45 PM

The only reason why even almost 60 years on, we are still a developing nation and not a developed nation, is the compromises we have made at every step(be it on the issues of corruption,or with undesrving politicians,or primary education) . There should be no compromises whatsoever when it comes to higher education, which gives birth to the business leaders of our nation.Leaders should be people of undisputed and unquestioned competence levels and not a bunch of half-baked individuals who thrive on charity. This is an insult also to competent people from lower classes, who are also viewed with contempt even if they are deserving.India is going thru an important era in it's economic growth. This phase needs solid professionals to spearhead it.Quota system would finish us off.

Caste System - No good
by Preeti on Apr 13, 2006 04:54 PM

Admissions based on caste is a bane to our nation which is leaping towards prosperity based on its merit. Its like Aperson who started using crutches after a fracture recieved loads of sympathy and privileges due to the handicap. Even after getting well he did not want to let go of the comfort and stck to the crutches even after the leg became well.
The same is happening with our caste system.
Lots of efforts had gone in uplifting the weaker sections of the society and now the divide amongst us is no more due to caste but due to financial status.Let there be reservations to the finacially poor sections. These reservations should be mde only for primary education and they should be provided financial assistance for higher education purely based on merit.
There are many upper caste people too who are struggling for a meal a day.
Lets say no to the divide created among humans in the name of caste.Lets strive to remove the divide created due to financial differences with more innovative and constructive interventions.

i very much agree with the author..this castism should be removed completely.particularly if caste is considered for admission in educational institution it will dilute the quality.few politicians just for their own benefit use caste and all those points....

merit over caste
by anand ramanathan on Apr 13, 2006 02:14 PM

Dear Moderator,

It should never have been caste versus merit. It should always read as merit over caste. The main problem lies with the Short term planning at all levels.

Rather than giving the facilities so as to promote healthy competition, the policy makers have resorted the easy way out by creating quota systems.

A better approach would have been to create aid at the grass root levels. Start from School level. Provide an equal platform so that in the long run, only those who are good are in the race. The question for quota does not arise at all.

Why are English medium school students prefered over the public school students? Pretty good question? We are living in a world which is getting smaller and smaller by the day. The job market is the world. Its a matter of time for foreigners to be competing against us for jobs in Indian companies. What are we going to do then?, stop recruiting foreign people because they are outsiders? I agree that local talent has to be exploited first and IF and only IF there is no local talent available then only outsiders should be allowed.

In our case here, where are we giving a chance for the local talent to develop.-Anand

The caste based reservation
by Truth on Apr 13, 2006 02:06 PM

The author sounds to be blindly throwing his hatred. !. The caste based reservation is introduced not to spread the caste system, but because those belonging to that castes are economically and socially backward.
There must be compulsory free education for all till secondary.
Our education system is so great that only the rich gets admission to higher education(bcoz they are trained by private coaching centres!). Would the author say to eliminate the cash based quota in higher education?
There must be reservation based on the creamy layer. But increase the number of colleges so that others are not affected.
But i would like to say that, reservation system should be limited to education only , not for job!!

Think before you write somthing !

Unvalid Reasoning
by Response on Apr 13, 2006 12:45 PM

I absolutely dont agree to this plea of doing away with reservations. If they are not there, then it will be back to the good old days when, the society was broken down to different strata based on caste. So I guess its pinching all the upper caste people, when they are getting a slice of their own rules. Atleast 50% seats are kept for them, for the past 5000 years, the lower class people didn't even get 1% seats, anywhere in the society. So guys chill, to undo all these things of the past, one has to definately support reservations based on caste.
