if govt is hell bent on making reservations based on caste. It should also bring a legislation to allow caste conversions so that people have free choice to change their castes and not fix them by birth.
This way disadvantaged people born in unreserved caste have option to convert and get benefits.
Yes. I agree with comments. The reservation system is damaging the morale of many students who secure much higher marks compared to the students of reserved clases, but could not secure the accommodation in higher education.
Today, if India is making its presence felt in major international fora, it is because of the contributions by its intellectuals mostly from these premier institutes. Thanks to the efforts of their respective faculty and alumni, the institutes have attained the name and importance which they highly deserve. These politicians make a mockery of everything keeping in mind only their vote-bank politics, in the process causing irreparable damage to the systems. They have no long-term VISION. Who will teach them? A LOUD public outcry is a MUST.
I'm Mr.A, from a forward caste (I learnt in school that the caste system was done away with, but when applying for college I came to know that I' belong to FC). I got 97% in my school exams. But I couldn't get into a good engineering/medical college in India since they asked 98% for my caste. So I've enrolled in a college in the USA to pursue my education, & settle there after that.
I'm Mr.B, from a backward caste. I got 73% in my school exams. But I couldn't get a seat in an engineering/medical colleage, since they said that 75% is teh cut off for my caste. So I've enrolled in an arts college & hope to become a clerk/accountant in life.
I'm Mr.C, from a scheduled tribe. I got 40% in my school exams. I got a seat in one of India's most prestigious medical colleges, since they said a mere pass is enough for me to enter into college. I hope to settle down in Delhi to earn money. I don't want to go back to my tribal village, where there is no basic amenities.
Brilliant students emigrate to where opportunities are (brain drain). Average students deprived of good chances, become normal working staff. Poor performing students get into the best colleges. Where's India heading to?
Hi, There should be uniformity in reservations for all central and state colleges or none at all. Best is let the power of admission and scholarships rest with the respective college boards so that we can actually see foreigners coming in to study rather than south asians flying out in droves. rgds, GB
PKL. April 13th,06,Thursday. Sri Ramannand your columnist is dead right let Merit prevail and abolish the pernicious caste...But how you can achieve this object in reasonably credible manner.Indians who love merit first know what it is- "Merit". I distinctly remember ,Challenging the high -powered Educational commission some 41 yrs. back under Prof DS Kothari &Mr GC Naik when I argued its persisting articulation as synonymous to speech ,writing and flippancy in English, and alone ,it is again this urban middle-class tilt that is deified by Indian Estt.in the deluge of high premiums earned by neophytes of Inf.scs,BPOS and alumni of IITS and IIMs. It is not merit sir , but glorification of the white Masks on our swarthy black skins that is substitued for merit in official reckonings!Be it the veteran sport- person Kapildev of yester-decades or others...Abolish class-distinctions,have neighbourhood schools, let no one flaunt Anglicisation as merit and you would see the great Kundalini of the Billion + Indians would show what is real merit. the caste system should end. the reservations are an insult to the lower caste to categorise them as "lower" in the first place. it repeadtedly reminds them of being a lower caste person. how sad. why dont people through the political schemes ? the politicians want a vote bank. they dont people to be smart, they'd want poverty to continue, they'd want electricity , water and basic problems to continue! they'd lose thier easy votes otherwise. they'd have to actually work after that!
These is exactly what all of us keep saying. Sadly it is politics which drives all our systems, be it education or jobs. This is never going to change unless someone goes for drastic revolution and protest.
