most of this 83% unemployed engineers cd be from computer education background...parents and would be engineers - pl.understand IT is down and out...pl.prepare ur child to take other streams...unfortunately, very few talk about core engineering , Lathes, CNC machines, etc. these days...talking of these itself is percieved as a taboo...whereas rest of the world, particularly China & Germany are excellent engineering masters of automobiles, aerospaces, energy devices, etc...pl.explore non-IT streams.

Problem with mindset and system
by Ashish Sharma on Sep 12, 2012 01:18 PM

It because more professional degree holders are created every year than the number of jobs in respective fields. A majority of these professional get their qualification from sub-par institutes that lack proper technology and facilities, wherein they get their admission in by paying huge donation fee. Moreover, their mindset is to get a good job in a multinational instead of opening their own small scale engineering workshop. When even institutes like IIT lack behind in their ranking and technical upgradation compared to other international institutions, situation for these regional institutes is worse. What else can we expect.

In Andhra Pradesh this acadamic year the Engineering seats are 3.0 Lacs and the candidates are 1.5 Lacs. Upto year 1995 the Engineering seats in AP are 2000 and the candidates for the entrance exam was 1.0 Lac.This statistics speaks everything. How can the quality of an Engineer in general will improve?

True. The pathetics unemployabiulity of Engineers is due to large swaths of land given away by all AP govts during last 15-20 yrs to private colleges who cannot do not know how to run colleges. They do not maintain a updated library, industrial workshops, computer labs, softwares, faculty, etc. Private players made a lot of money thru management quotas. The state level entrace test EAMCET is a joke. Few topper gets into govt. colleges, but all others get a engineering seat even if 1,00,000 and above rank...shame that parents are party to this current situation...and so all unemployed land up in united states of ameerpet or SR nagar to learn basic software applications, then fake thier experience, apply for US visa, prompt US authorities to brand Indians as thiefs on thier immigration websites...parents must understand that there are several other professions for thier child to explore.

Blame the system
by Ramesh Mosur on Sep 12, 2012 01:13 PM

The problem is not only with Engineers. The rot has set in all professions. We need to amend the educations system right from primary scholl level. I do not expect this happening in the near future with sucessive governments being busy in looting the nation and covering up the mess

Agreed...

I agree with the writer, we have been conducting interviews for the Engineers and it is indeed very sad to see graduate engineers who cannot communicate properly, do not have clarity on fundamentals. Most of the simple problems provided to these applicants remain unresolved. the flaw is on both sides, Teachers share a major blame but the student as well, who is not willing to learn. Hope atleast the students see this article and decide to upgrade their skills and life.

Today's Engineering graduates
by raju on Sep 12, 2012 01:09 PM  | Hide replies

There are many private Engineering colleges and many graduate engineers come out every year. The quality of Engineers are extremely poor. You can find many indians who do higher degree in USA(i.eMS), they confirm that their standard was so poor in India and they struggled a lot to cope up with their higher studies.

Students, companies and colleges all are at fault
by ! on Sep 12, 2012 01:05 PM

The problem is more emphasis is laid on theoretical education than on practicals. I did my B.E(Electronics & Telecommunication) from Pune university. But it was purely theory subject. We did not have not praticals for subject Telematics in which study of Telephones and exchanges is there. Nor it was required in syllabus for Study tour of any Telephone Exchange or any Telephone company or special languages related to telephone industry. Then how can you expect such an engineer to ready to be employed in mobile company for designing telephone if he has not opened up a phone and knows its practical working. Also for projects even for B.E level most of the students buy readymade projects from market and hence are ignorant about practical difficulties and design decisions that are required to be taken for their own project. They only concentrate on theory and in campus jobs are given only to those who score high in marklist and no value is given to practical knowledge during these campus interviews.
