Good English is prerequiste for being a waiter...not engineer!
by Rao Fakir on Jun 09, 2013 04:12 AM

The top-notch engineers in the world are Koreans, Japanese, Taiwanese and German...all non-English speaking nations...even in the U.S. (where the language of business in English), some of the top notch engineers are Chinese-born whose English is far worse than te worst English-speaker in India! So for being good engineer, you need good engineering knowledge and brain, not good English..may be to be a waiter at a 5 start hotel, you need to have good command over spoken English but notfor engineering

Not Just about ENGREZI
by Abhi TwoPointO on Sep 13, 2012 12:40 PM

People, if you read the article carefully it says that many people are not even proficient in their MOTHER TONGUES. I can understand that if English is not one's first language, fluency can be an issue. But what about fluency in your first language? Can these engineers write good Tamil syntax if from Chennai or compose a thought provoking essay in shudh Hindi if from Delhi? I think the larger malaise is no communication skills or ability which betrays a mind that cannot organize thoughts and articulate them to others.

50% of Indian engineers LACK basic ENGLISH skills!

This deficiency is not seen during 1970 to 1990s when the Corporate Colleges/Schools were not established. The stress is more on the core subjects and not on languages which is the main cause for deficiency. During 1980s the Govt. Schools were well performed and the teachers are also teaching the students with devotion. Now it is commercialized. For English there is a separate coaching centre like SPOKEN ENGLISH. For other subjects like Maths, Physics, Chemistry there are coaching centers which deal with EAMCET etc. Dependency on colleges/schools is much less as they tend to go these coaching centers which attract students. The Engg. colleges they themselves do not have any good Faculty and one faculty rolling to 3 to 4 colleges and imagine what education the engg. colleges can offer. Every MLA/MP/Minister is having his own engg. college and you imagine its functioning being political. Unless drastic steps taken to close the colleges which do not have proper faculty and infrastructure, you do not expect good education. Mass copying is also one of the factors as every engg. student gets first class no 2nd or 3rd class. But when he goes for interview he gets 30 to 40 marks only. Parents should be alert in getting education. Do not pay high donation and join them in C class Engg. colleges. Let him study one more year and appear EAMCET and get a good rank.

If 50% engineers only lack knowledge of english, it is very good data. We have many Backward classes, besides SC,ST,muslims, our 70% population lives in villages or small towns. We need both type of technical hands, knowing English for IT/advance research jobs etc., as well as working engineers on the site/field. This combination is one of the ideal combination.

Yes, since Engineering is taught in English, it is very, very, very good data.

These 50% engineers who lack basic English skills are going to be the best Engineers when it comes to communicating technical aspects of their work to their global coworkers.

Engineers in India need to know English, Engineers need not
by Premendra Pranay on Jul 25, 2012 02:21 PM  | Hide replies

Indian Engineers need to know English so that they can be employed by masters knowing English. What other members are saying is that "English is not necessary for Engineers" , is 100% correct. For technical knowledge and economic development English is not necessary. All technical giants like Germany , Japan etc are not English speaking countries. Ones saying that " English is Global language " can read map but cannot understand it. that is why they are declaring it a Global language. For ill informed, one information. China spend twenty years and million of dollars in translating technical books into local language and taught technology in local language. That is why today they are what they are.In India, we learn technology by rote without understanding it because it is written in English. You can identify them by statement they frequently make " English is Global Language". Not because it is global language but because it is written in books by Britishers and Americans. No country can develop either socially , technologically or economically where " knowing a foreign language " is a criterion for employability. Learn English for your economic development in India but social and technological development? A big NO.

All education in India should be in local languages and if that is not possible, should be in Sanskrit language.
