Education standard is also low in India. In many colleges there is no sufficient apparatus to carry on lab test, but we get degrees like B.Sc., M.Sc. chemistry or B.E. Chemical. Professors work on low wages, no interest in teaching. No library, books and facilities. This is not the case of only engineers, many managers in other fields also do not know proper English. They cant write an influential letter to Bank or any other authority and you will find many mistakes..
Pritam Inst of Tech. Lovely Professional Inst. MahaKaal Inst. of Tech. Dhulia Inst of Tech. Sehore Inst. of Tech.
What u can except from engineers??? who graduated from such colleges. On top of that these people are working in MNCs which usually hire only engineers from best colleges.

The number of Chinese studying English is rapidly rising. We will soon see the Chinese displacing us from the pre-eminent position we enjoy in the IT field.
The author seems to be a Englishman propogating his language skill. For an Engineer engineering skill and analytic skill is the primary requirement. While thinking on a problem basically a person thinks clearly in his mother tongue or the language of the region where he has been brought up. Does the author think that a person who could speak english due to his schooling in a convent school can be a better engineer. No it is not. My experience of over 30 years working as an Engineer, Manager and controller of some of the projects within India and also abroad has taught me that Indian Engineers with limited english knowledge are far far better than English fluent Indians , Europeans, Australians and Americans. I can narrate 100s of examples where these engineers with their skill and ideas have been able to solve many problems at project sites.
Most of the engineering colleges are run like business expect making money they dont impart basic skills for the industries. I was in IAF in the technical dept and english was comuplsary before they imparted technical knowledge. In fact one should learn from the defence insitution

Ya only the advanced defence technical institutions spell except as expect and compulsory as compulsary. Ordinary IITs and NITs are not good enough.

Technical reporting is as important as the core technical interventions in any situation. France or China do not use english as the medium but we do, due to our history. So a certain degree of proficiency is essential in that language to avoid errors in communication entailing rework and losses.
I am not an Engineer. I am ordinary graduate. One of my friends who is Engineer visited Surat and installed some machine from his company. He was to prepare the report. He was unable to make the report. So I made the report. His boss said to him. Definitely, you had not made this report. My friend himself told this to me. But for Engineering post I think fluency on English not required. What is required is technical skill and talent. If one has that, It is ok.

left brained - proficient language. right brained - proficient logic and mathematics. There is no hard and fast rule but upto some extent, also proved scientifically. choose according to your abilities.

Many Indians are working as engineers without holding any degree; making lives better. Most of the problems around us do not require very detailed knowledge of engineering or language-skills. We should consider that in typical Indian mind-set we are not gutsy enough to see a problem head-on, we just find who is responsible and start abusing them. Still we have a few good minds who believe in their 'work' more than anything else.
