Selection process not transparent
by Ravi Venkat on Apr 28, 2010 08:21 AM  | Hide replies

I have come across atleast 6 different cases where NDA aspirants went up to the interview stage and were not selected despite being brilliant and with great proficiency in English language. In one case, a candidate who could not even speak English properly was selected. No wonder because his father was a senior officer in the armed forces. There is nepotism and favouritism in the selection. A few get through on merit but pulling strings works a great deal in securing admission. It does not always work on merit. Sriram is lucky in this case. There are many young minds that have become disillusioned. Just having the ideal to serve the nation is not enough. It is important to have the right connections as well.

criterion for selection in army is different.

army wants men of action, not men of letters.

young men with special skills and high academic qualifications invariably leave army.

however army does hire engineering graduates in technical divisions; after all it is modernising for future warefares.

brilliance and english are not the most important criteria. one should have the cool head and decisiveness to deal with situations like dantewada. one has to pass written, interview, medicals, psychological test and aptitude test to make it. the complete procedure is more extensive than the rote based ias etc.

There is no requirement that one needs to be good in English for NDA. I remember when I when for SSB (in 1998 - and i did not get through), there was this section to make senteces - theu flash a word on the screen. Also they flash pictures on the screen and you need to write a story. NDA is not in lookout for movie scriptwriters or novelistst that you complete this section with pure literary excellence. Even if you pen down a few words, they could make out the psychology of the person who wrote it.

very true, hope our humanity gets to that point one day... over 60% of our worlds funds are going into defense and war which is invariably destructing the human race. if it is used for the betterment of human race, humanity would be the best thing to happen to this universe.

This is because of US.
Primary business of US is to manufacture arms and ammunitions, hence due to this,as said by you,60% of funds spent on defence world wide, out of that,I definately can say that a large chunk of money goes in pockets of Arms manufacturers of US.

Getting selected in NDA is very tough, NDA is not for all. Every year more than 5lakh candidates apply and max. 600 get selected.

this North Indian, South Indian culture will not take us anywhere. The media creates more divide than the politicians. Nowhere do they write any article where they do not bring out the divide. Atleast leave the Armed Forces as they are. Dont divide then into parts.

Yes, topping NDA exams is a great thing.. but whats the big deal in dropping engineering? So many students now a days do this for entering better courses...there is no big deal in dropping engineering and joining NDA

It is a big deal! These days everybody heads for the place where the moolah is. Almost everybody goes for MBA as preference, how many go for Maths and Physics. Just like army, air force or navy officers, the nation needs scientists also.

Sriram is worth emulation
by mallaiah anchoori on Apr 27, 2010 10:28 PM

In olden days, there used to be a belief that no parent was willingly ready to arrange for a wed lock of his/her daughter with a "knight" since his life was uncertain with the imminent danger of his being sent to the warfare. Now, the belief has undergone a change in tune withe times & attitudes of people-especially amongst the enlightened & educated girls & their parents.Cadet Sriram appears to be a person belonging to the school of thought of priortising service to the nation over several other lucrative careers with fabulous perqisites & salaries. His decision & determination are quite laudable & worth emulation.Let all other youngsters who blame the future as gloomy without any job prospects despite their so called higher eduacation & technical competence take tips & follow pursuit of Sriram. There is widespread belief that either engineering or medicine or a group I civil service only are the doors one should enter through by any educated person with reasonable IQ.Sriram has rightly proved that where there is will there is way & one needs to develop perseverance to reach his goals & become some thing worth in life.As he correctly said, defence training aims at developing all traits of a right personality development."A sound mind in a sound body"- is the theory behind all the rigorous physical activities i
