What is happening in India is, majority riches are donating to the temples rather than paying the same to the Government for R&D Purposes etc., or to the educational institutions. On the one hand, every Hindu, who has legally/illegally amassed wealth, 'feels' that by donating to the God/temples, they can mitigate their sins and hence can have good after life, say heaven etc., On the other hand, by seeing these CORRUPT,DISHONEST,SELF-CENTERED and CRIMINAL politicians, the donor has no hope that it will be exclusively used for educational and social purposes by these thieves. Also, the peoples' mind is filled with lot of stories of sin, after life, hell, etc.,etc., and thus the priests, who are second rank politicians, scare the people and hence to propitiate the God, the rich donate to the temples and hence Gods like Thirupathi, Shirdi etc.have become rich money generators. Later on, whether the temple people use it strictly for social cause etc.,is known only to the priests and God. Like this, now-a-days many priests are having costly mobiles, cars, gold/cash etc. and a luxurious life than some honest buerocrats/officials who are dependent on salary. So, for better social justice and right dissemination of temple funds, free food, medical care and donation to higher educations institutions like, AIIMS, IITs, IIMs and enginnering colleges should be made availalbe. The Endowment authorities must be more transparent with temple authority and see that the money is used rightly

very irrelevant and nonsensical message.. where is data to support this sort of scandalous interference in the huge contribution made by philanthropic individuals to the cause of primary, secondary & higher education... and Temples like Thirupathi or the Saibaba Trust have put up magnificent institutions of learning.. talk after knowing some facts.. don't shoot yourself in your mouth.

If the christian missionaries utilize the money that they are getting from outside coutries they can convert around 30 more people in to their religion. But they also corrupted people that's why the conversion is not that much speed.
In my city if you conduct a Prayer on sunday with few people he will get 4000 Rs per week some thing like this is happening.Corruption is only in the minds of the people not in the religion.

This is a onesided argument. Please open your eyes and be a lotmore balanced with your views. Aren't corrupt and dishonest ppl there in other religions? Don't they make donations for their places of worship? What are you talking!

ridiculous!!

It's ridiculous and an irony, that rediff gets advise from some so called expert on our education system, but person himself sends his child to US university,he himself didn't attend a single class, very proudly he anounces, moreover writes exactly opposite, Most of students in US,UK, are bothered about how better way to freek out, drink, smoke and f... every evening, whereas in India may be only elite, moneyed children can afford to do that.
Rediff should think before interviewing and further posting.

i don't see why should people be defensive about the education system...

it is wrong from the very beginning...u people just learn 2 mug & write them in exams...I have seen a lot of people who even mug mathematics & still do well...

some people have risen above it, credit goes to them, but how many of them can u count out of 1 billion?...

& what do you think about the level of original scientific research in India?...most bright people run away after graduation, not only because of money but also because of better research environment...

Students/people run away for various reasons, for clean air, water, ample spaces, green surroundings, lot of money at cost of doing daily houshold chores of washing utensils, clothes, but you don't get stinking smells and don't have overcrowded local trains and most imp.,one can afford 500 sq.ft house in no time, in these countries,as compared to mumbai, delhi, pune ,bangalore.
These are facts of life ,Mr.das,u just cann't deny them
But point is not why people run away, it's that Why rediff publishes views of a person, who himself is having no faith in his country men and finds all mistakes ?????

it is precisely the point dear adwait ..

what do you attend classes for ? what will you lose if you do not attend classes ? zilch ... in fact you will become a better person if you do not give any credence to a decayed system of our schooling ...

and the fact that he felt the need to send his kids to US is a cause of concern ... so many of us would have done the same if resources permit it. so the disease is something else, not the fact that some people go to US for studies ...

and everybody knows very well what is the disease - it is the pathetic education infrastructure we have ...

what we are debating here is the causes of that disease and how to eradicate it.

contribute something constructive rather than heaping personal criticism ...

The same pathetic education system of India has produced millions of bright and hardworking ( they have to do it to survive abroad)students, who are doing better than other country students in developed countries schools!!Due to which they are considered threat, and mind well most of them have graduated in this very nation, and then gone for greener pasteures or whatever.I don't know which disease u write about,
I maintain my comments reg.Mr.Tarun

the bright students you are seeing are the statistical fluctuations of the system. there are statistical fluctuations in other direction too ... we have dawood ibrahim and chota shakeel also as products of the same education system. for these statistical fluctuations, the system is not responsible ... they will alwsys be there ... can become worse or better but cannot be eliminated.

what i talking about is the average level of our educational system. and that is rotten no matter how many silicon valley engineers come out of its ranks ... see the percentage of silicon valley engineers among the total number of school going kids and you will see what 'average level' I am talking about.

and also you yourself raised one pointed finger at the education system when you said that the educated exports are considered a threat in developed countries ... mind you these bright brains if they live in India are no threat ... they become threat if they are trained in US universities ...

and whatever little bright brains we produce (no doubt we have good universities but very few) are in spite of the system not because of the system.

all the fellows
by Niraj Prasad on Dec 14, 2009 04:39 PM  | Hide replies

all the fellows here who have reduced this important debate to reservation debate please answer this one question -

if you eliminate (or increase) reservation for any class (caste/creed) does it increase the openness of mind, does it makes 'education' any better. education are not just about schools or colleges. a drop out who is useful to society is much more educated than a PhD degree holder who promotes his caste fellows (and our universities are replete with such fellows) ...

just for example -- i would consider Dhirubhai Ambani as a highly educated person coz he created jobs for many, created wealth for many, expanded the manufacturing horizons of India .. but please do not think that he is the only role model that I want our kids to consider. we want role models in every walks of life ... business included. I could give the same type of example in the case of Amir khan ... he is also one dropout. anyway this is going astray ...

this debate is about how to make our education system truly 'liberating', truly 'open-minded', truly 'educating' ... for that we need a basic fundamental change in the way we think ... a piecemeal solution of implementing (or dismantling) something as trivial as reservation is not the answer ...

how do you inculcate a sense of open mindedness, liberal and independent thinking (of the kind that Dhirubhai and Amir has - just to reiterate my earlier example) among our kids ? either you do it by the channels of education or otherwise ...

schools are just the easiest way to 'educate' our kids, they are also the most accessible to people who want such changes. family and parents are not accessible to us, neither is interfering in family affairs desirable.

so the debate centers around thsi issue --

how do we improve school/college/university system today so that we have better thinking, sensitive, humane, independent, rational, citizens tomorrow ??

guys, please do not let the reservation issue or any such politically charged issue deviate you ...

think hard ... this is not as trivial as having more IITs or having more reservation or sending our kids to US

it is easier said than done... 4 rural population v don even hv basic infrastructures in thousands of villages n we start talkin of liberating it(edu.) ..education 2b made universally availble 2 all wl hv 2b tackled politically only..gov hv nt bn able 2 bring in reqd. consesus 2 mk it a fundamental right...1st there hs 2b an honest n strong political will 4 ensuring universal education in d country , then only it cn b administratively formulated n implemented , wid d present ruling political setup it doesnt seem possible as they hv other agenda pts. imp.2them, may b perhaps wen sum other ruling setup comesup.. so dude wat u think may b good 2 read but nt practicable enuf 2 practise..ideal thinking bcums idle in practice if it isnt pragmatic in charactr.....
