The Tamilnadu brahmins have indeed adopted very well to changing times without diluting Brahminical values customs and virtues inspite of discrimination, hatred spread by some people. You cannot expect a devout brahmin to go to a multinational company office work in a traditional dress. He has to adopt and no doubt the present brahmin generation is adopting.Brahmins have fierce loyalty to nation and some of their forefathers were leading freedom fighters. What ever the discrimination against them in the present society they have resilience and competitive spirit to come up in life. When our politicians are talking about market led economics they should also talk of open competion with economic status alone determining weaker section for certain priveleages.

What adoptions are you talking about? what do you think rest of the indians doing? are they wearing dhoti to office. Infact u r right.. brahmins have always adopted according to the rule and assumed profitable positions whether the ruler is Mughal, Maratha, or British irrespective or national, regional or moral concerns. If thats the adoption ur talking, yes ur right, from Urmila to Madhu Sapre, brahmins have adopted to changing cultural values n yet remained at the top of society. But how is that adoption related to issue of discrimination, of brahmins or by brahmins? It makes no difference to the downcaste person what cultural adoption brahmin makes as long as the holy Varnashram or the caste system remains unaltered in his mind.

In the same lines you must have heard of Dr. KR Narayanan, the ex-president of india who was a dalit. If the corrective steps were not take for social justice, he wud have never achieved that position due to the brahminical system of caste. Its not the brahmin people, it the tendency and the doctrine they get preached to. FYI many of Ambedkar's goodwishers and friends were brahmins who believed their historical doctrines n practices were in fact toxic n needed to be changed.
and btw, the irrelevant topic of adoption was not raised by me.

enough of reservation
by Undertaker on Apr 01, 2009 12:10 PM

We have had enough of reservation in India for last 60 years. Poor have rermained poor and rich have become richer including those who have fully utilised reservation in last 60 years, but still craving for it. The Constituion should be amended to include all in reserved category based on economic critera only. No more dalit appeasement policy in future. See the impact of it, we have lost best bains in India to US and other western countires and are saddled with in efficient and corrupt people who rule us indireclty through this reservation policies. Reservation is a political tool used by congress very effectively that no one wants to abolish it or no benificiaries ready to give it up.

Its not recently, please read the book "Who were Shudras?" by Dr. Ambedkar. He himself has denied the Aryan theory and with evidence proved how cunningly the caste system got developed. Only mistake of shudras was, these were the people not cunning enough in the changing politics. It is only fair that they are regaining the lost power again through politics.

Please giv ethem a chance!
by susheel kulkarni on Apr 01, 2009 12:03 PM

Its a high time that BCCI should give fair chance to the minority Muslims , Christians, Catholics, Buddhists, Scheduled Tribes, Scheduled Casts, Other Backward Class, Nomadic Tribes, Gurrillas, Naxalists, Maoists, Gujjars, Minas, etc, so that they won't remain socially backward by not representing themselves into indian cricket team.
Give them a FAIR chance in INDIAN cricket team on pro-rata basis, so that no one should feel socially, mentally, psychologically, physically or emotionally backward in this already "BACKWARD" country.

Brahmins can get 1% reservation.
by RaviSelvan CheyyurRam on Apr 01, 2009 12:01 PM  | Hide replies

I belong to SCaste. I had had enough thoughts, rightfrom my school days, about reservation for brahmins. I support the reservation for Brahmins. But the 7% is not a correct ratio. The non-brahmins who are more than 98% of the population get only 69% reseravtion in total. With my current knowledge about brahmins population, I think Brahmins can be alloted only 1% reservation. In count its a big number to their population. Let 30% for open competition.

I will change my support for Brahmins reservation if some expert can justify the reason for not giving reservation to brahmins?

Reservation in jobs
by kancheepuram narasimhan on Apr 01, 2009 12:01 PM  | Hide replies

while reservation is good in principle- as it was intended to lift the oppressed and down trodden- it should be stopped in its present form; because any one in TN/UP/Ap can simply bribe the State govt officials and get a SC/ST or BC certificate, defeating the very purpose of reservation.reservation may continue on income basis only.

A person can get a fake degree certificate. Do you abolish colleges? A person can get examination paper ‘out’ before the exam itself. Do you abolish examinations?

Reservation should be only at High School levels. It is govt's responsibility to improve the standard of education on par with private schools.
Once the reservation is availed at high school level, one should compete in open for higher education and jobs.
