Tendulkar good but Don is the best: Boycott
by Casino Royale on Oct 19, 2008 02:31 AM

Former England batsman Geoffrey Boycott feels Sachin Tendulkar becoming the highest run-getter in Test cricket was inevitable considering the number of matches he has played but the feat does not make him a better player than Australian legend Don Bradman.

Tendulkar eclipsed Brian Lara as the highest accumulator of Test runs and in the process, also became the first player to cross the 12,000 run mark in the longer version of the game with a tally of 12,027 runs.

"There'll always be people who break records because nowadays they play more Test matches than ever, more one-day internationals," he pointed out.

"It was inevitable that people like Lara and Tendulkar - two of the great players of the last few years - would break records of some distinction almost every other year or two," Boycott told 'BBC Radio Five Live'.

The Englsiman stated that great stats alone don't make a player comparable to someone like Bradman.

Boycott said had it been the case, then he too broke a record set by Gray Sobers by crossing the 8,000-run mark in Tests "but it didn't make me a better player than Garry Sobers and it won't make Tendulkar a better player than Bradman, a genius - the best batsman of the lot."

"I broke Garry Sobers' record and I said at the time that if you play enough Test matches and you're pretty good at what you do then you'll break records," he added.

But despite his admiration for Bradman, Boycott said he remains extremely fond of Tendulkar for the way he

Sachin

I see a few guys talking about Lara and Ponting. I am a big fan of all three. I am not arguing Sachin is better, but want to make sure that people understand how great an achievement this is.
Sachin Ponting Lara
----------------------------
Tests 152 121 131
Inns 247 201 232
Avg 54.17 58.50 52.88
100s 39 36 34
50s 50 40 48
Runs 12027 10239 11953
----------------------------
ODI 417 301 299
Inns 407 292 289
Avg 44.33 43.24 40.48
100s 42 26 19
50s 89 64 63
Runs 16361 11113 10405
Two points that are not true
1. Sachin played more matches than Lara: Sachin actually has better average than Lara. Ponting does have the best average and he will break the test record soon. In ODI's Sachin has the best average of this group. All 3 of these are really great players, worrying who is better is neither easy nor productive.
2. Sachin is getting more chances: Look at this record. This guy earned his place in the team. Today's 88 proved that he is still the mainstay of Indian batting order. No one can argue that we have 5 better batsmen today than Sachin Tendulkar, even with his allegedly dimished skills. When we do have 5 batsmen better than him, he can leave.
Finally, he is the only batsman to hold most test runs, most test centuries, most ODI runs and most ODI centuries records simultaneously. No one comes close to that ever.

Sachin and Ricky Ponting got approx same age at this point of time as Sachin is. Assuming both retire at same time, Sachin will hold the record (theoretically). Who knows Ricky Ponting may be shown the door after this series.

Wish him good health. It is not easy to start playing at 16 and continue for 19 yrs..

Humility and Passion Personified

It was never about the runs scored and records broken. The feat will be achieved by many. But, the way Sachin has done it by winning the hearts of the people all over the world, being on ground firmly always can never be replicated by anyone. Sachin is one of the greatest ever human beings in the sporting arena for his simplicity, charm, enthusiasm, passion, committment, sincerity and joyful expressions. The runs and records will follow him wherever he will go. God Bless Sachin!!

He played the maximum number of test matches. Any average person if he plays those many matches can get mote or less the same runs.

REally then why dont any other average player did that earlier. An average player will not last even 30 tests leave alone playing 150 tests, so stop posting your nonsensical comments here.

Avg prson cannot have test batting avg of 54plus. Only other indin near him is Rahul Dravid (avg 53) . Then Sewag & Gavaskar with 51 batting avg . All other players are below 50 or 40.

Staying at that high avg after 19 years of cricket is very difficult. You will understand this if you have played any quality cricked. Addition to that 16000 one day runs making tally of 28000 plus internation runsIt is mind blowing achievement And I do not think anybody in future will make 28000 international runs. Nobody has made in past.

sachine is one of the best player (great) in this cricket world. he has crossed another milestone yesterday it was wonderful for the indians. please put aside the debate about selfish or team player.
he has surpassed 12,000 runs for that every indian cricket fan has to give applaud because no player in this world of cricket except don bradman and sachin has so consistent for almost 20 years

Ignore those who criticise Sachin. They do it just for the sake of crticising him and it that gives some happiness in their otherwise unhappy lives let them do it. They are all ignorant and don't have a sense of judgement.
