Why Whatmore?
by Ajishnu Sharma on Jun 06, 2007 04:13 PM

This guy takes things a bit too far always... from his nonchalant wave which acts as a sentence finisher to bizarre remarks like this one...

We opted for a foreigner in the first place because we tried for years with Indian coaches (including the Paaji himself) until everyone finally gave up.

Patriotism is fine, but it has to pay dividends - the guy who would make a good coach, Shastri, is not interested, because of media commitments (so much for patriotism and national cause). Dtop being ridiculous paaji, go back to your golf or whatever has caught your fancy lately, and leave team India alone.

They are already facing enough from a bunch of narrow-visioned selfish morons who call themselves cricket 'fans', without having you jump into the fray too.

What's he talking about?
by Ravi Shankar on Jun 05, 2007 08:38 AM

I've always liked Kapil for his straight-up no-frills attitude. But he's a bit out of his depth here, isn't he?

He says, "The players have never worked with Whatmore, how can they recommend his name." Er... so if there's a great World Cup winning coach out there who our boys haven't worked with, they can't recommend his name? Kapil, the man helped a not so superlative team win a World Cup. If our boys haven't worked with him yet, maybe they should be!

Personally, I don't see what the big deal is. Indian or foreigner, hire the coach who has the best plan to get us :
1) to top 3 of test cricket & keep us there for 2 years
2) ditto ODI cricket
3) at least a 50% win record in Twenty20 cricket, which I suspect is on its way to kicking 50-over cricket in the backside.

Mohinder Amarnath
and Sandeep Patil should be given a chance as both are willing abd much credible cricketers. May be Dennis Lilly search and train some fast bowlers for us

I'm not sure if credible cricket experience can make one a good coach. Like a lot of people have said, a coach is only as good as the captain & team. So where a coach can really contribute is areas that might not be so clear to the captain & team. Ideas. Lateral thinking. Buchanan-style. If Sehwag has gotten into a habit of leaving too much gap between his bat & pad while facing in-cutters, the coach should be able to notice it & help Sehwag correct that problem.

But I agree that Dennis Lillee helping our fast bowlers is a good idea. Fast bowling is an area where we have been traditionally weak & we can definitely use some help. Thankfully, we finally have a bowling coach in Prasad. Maybe Lillee could work with him as a consultant.

by binu on Jun 04, 2007 10:37 PM  | Hide replies

none of the indian coaches in contention has a playing creditablity outside india. how can they provide input. More over they will be awe of super 3 of indian team, they will be just ys sir ys sir to these guys. Can u imagine prasad giving his idea to tendu or rahul or saurav. It will be better we get a foreign coach, we all should remember under john wright(foreign coach) we had 4 good yrs. In Indian coach give chance to mohinder amarnath may be he will not bow tht much these seniors..

Prasad is a bowling coach, which is where he should remain for now. And as a bowling coach, he does have the authority to tell Ganguly what to do while bowling.

Amarnath might not have 41 37 centuries, but he played a key role in winning a World Cup. If I was Amarnath & I faced attitude from a top player, I would politely or not so politely remind him of that.

Not that I'm gunning for Amarnath. I just want that coach to be hired whose ideas have the best chance of working for us over the next couple of years. Personally, I'd lean towards Whatmore and dive away from Fletcher.

Make Vinod Kambli as a batting coach.
If Venkatesh Prasad deserves as a bowling coach, then definetly Kambli also.

Hi Rajesh,
Venkatesh Prasad had a good career as the coach to India under 19 team and brought them to the final of under 19 world cup.
If we remember correctly he was the player who bowled much better in unfavorable conditions than Srinath and won many matches for India. The overall statistics may not support his true calibre because his career ended abruptly while others got more chances. He definitely deserves to be a coach.

Venkatesh Prasad won matche(s)!! When?? Examples? He was a pathetic fast bowler with only one credible delivery (which was indeed good), a leg cutter. That's all

And India lost the Under 19 final to Pakistan in a pathetic display of cricket. They could not even chase 111 runs.

Just for the info of general public...
