India Coach-local or outsider
by Sashi Rao on Jun 04, 2007 12:50 PM  | Hide replies

Kapil Dev needs to realise 2 things- best players dont make best coaches-just look at John Buchanan.India's experience with past India players as coaches including Kapil were failures.Second, sadly having any Indian as coach brings in lack of objectivity and regionalism creeps in.
Way out now is to have a qualified and experienced foreign coach( not just explayer)but with two assistant Indian coaches. This way in say 2-3 years time we will have a pool of qualified and honed Indian coaches to be ready for the top coach role.

Mr Rao needs to realize two things - The example of John Buchanan is one of "not-too-good-players" making great coaches, not one of good plauers making bad coaches. In case you're fighting a war of examples, then you should probably have a look at Ajit Wadekar and John Wright, both decently good players, and coaches with good records.
Secondly, the names Kapil Dev suggested as Indian coaches were the likes of Ashok Malhotra etc. who dont even fit into the bill of past Indian greats who're ineligible to make good coaches

Mr.Suri needs to realize this, Ashok Malhotra is a good administrator and does know what cricket is. He was a good selector. Kapil cried his way out of match fixing and other than that nothing to say about his coaching. Wadekar as coach I agree but we cannot be world beaters and at best we can be good in India. Gaekwad was also very good coach, madan lal same case. We defeated good teams in India but outside zip. Only when Wright came along India started beating australia in Australia....So big NO to Indian Coaches.

All please understand two things - 1. Cricket is a dieing game 2. The only way to save is by asking Mandira to play the game in a bikini...

Musharraf should be India's next coach. Our players need strict discipline and that can come from a coach with military background.

How can anyone be worse than Greg
by Gorango Thakurta on Jun 04, 2007 12:33 PM

India was ruled by foreigners for 1500 years, how can we lose the hangover in 50 years?

Anyway, how can the team go any lower than where Greg Chappel left it?

Gavaskar will never take up this job. He is a smart businessman. He has lots of media commitments and a good brand image. He will never risk that on a fickle Indian team.

Bring Reservation in Cricket!
by Kamsten Yangte on Jun 04, 2007 11:04 AM  | Hide replies

Govt. should immediately bring reservation for SC/ST/OBC in sports and especially cricket. Cricketers are becoming rich and millionaires by sponsors, and these fruits should also go to SC/ST and OBC.
In this way industry will also help the under-privileged. Bring legislation for this parliament asap.

Not a bad idea!!! India is losing anyways with the current bunch of cricketers, so no harm in introducing reservation in cricket. Nobody can blame our cricket team for losing then..

Excellent suggestion. You must be such a jerk to give this. Already this country is going to dogs just because of reservations everywhere else and you want sports also to follow the same route. What a hopeless character you must be to come up with suggestions? Pl understand the importance of encouraging excellence, at least in sports and don't for heavens sake pollute sports with this contaminated thinking.

Even without reservations Indian sport and cricket it is no better. So why not let the under-privileged enjoy the fruits?

COACH
by Upadrasta PardhaSaradhi on Jun 04, 2007 10:24 AM  | Hide replies

SL able to win the World Cup under whatmore because they played like a team, listened to the coach and implemented the strategies discussed in the team meetings in a perfect fashion.

When you have senior players who only plays for their owen personal history, dont listen to the coach and captain and then tries to implement their own strategies, the team is never going to play as a team for a long period.

no coach or even god cant help the INdian Team until and unless the players especially Senior players come out of the impression that they
are semi-gods and can do anything and get away with it and play as a team.

Coach can give you suggestions. Its upto you to take in a positive manner or negative manner.

When Tom Moody challenged Murali and told him that you are becoming old and not good in Fielding, Murali took it as a challenge , improved his fielding and showed to his Coach that he is a world class players who takes suggestion as a suggestion and improves his game.

In the same way, when Greg told Saurav that you are not fit for Test cricket until you changes your game against a short pitch delivery, It
created a lot of nonsense and Saurav played all sorts of polititcs instead of improving his own game. Still his weakness is the short pitch
stuff and even the bowler like Shahadat Hossain can trouble him with the short pitch stuff.

If the players are not willing to listen and improve, even god cannot help them. Forget about the Coach.

great point ... i agree with you ...

my only point against greg chappell was that he was too fond of coaching his players through the media ... so he used to resort to SMSes and mails criticising people he didn't like (a lot of journalists can vouch for this beh.)

in short., greg chappell coached thru the media while whatmore/moody didn't.
