Congrats

I was looking at the Fide Website. Anand is ranked 4th in ELO after Kramnik, Carlsen and Topalov.

Pretty baseless rankings you know... to be world champion 3 successive times and then not be ranked #1.

I dont know chess well and even while looking at the end portion for the game 12, I couldnt tell why topalov resigned... I had to ask a bunch of people and analyse.

All these GMs trade queens very early in the game that I think makes the game simpler to follow but a little boring.

There is some awesome analysis on you tube. Dont just feel proud... do something to appreciate why Anand is so good.

Lastly, there are 4 other Indians in top 100 in chess. Surya Shekhar Ganguly, Sasikaran Krishnan, P. Hari Krishna and one other person...

I hope they carry forward the tradition and chess becomes a good national passtime.

Those are the old ratings. As per the new rating after the world title, Anand might be ranked 2nd or 3rd. You need to check the date of the given ratings.

Last but NOT least- SRK - North
these names are sufficient to accomodate all "BIG South" names

why he stays in spain.
by sambamoorthy jambunathan on May 13, 2010 12:31 AM  | Hide replies

Bobby : Hi Anand,Why do you prefer staying in Spain. Is it anything to do with the taxes
Viswanathan Anand : From January to June, the chess circuit is at its busiest and as the majority of events happen in Europe its convenient for me to train and live in Spain. However, in the second half of the year, when the calendar is a bit lighter, then I usually come to India for a couple of months.

The only Indian sportmen who can be compared to Anand are Dhyanchand and Tendulkar. Rest are all just nowhere near.

I hope he gets the Bharat Ratna soon.

I would beg to differ .....Along with these three, i would add Milkha Singh ( the only indian athlete to break a olympic record) and Ramanadan Krishan (former world number 2 in Mens Singles Tennis and captain of 1960 Davis cup runners up team) ....

These 5 are legends in their own right.

i want....
by Arun Kumar on May 13, 2010 12:04 AM

i want to congratulate this genius... But my bigger demand from everyone who can fulfill my demand is that since Indians are inherently lazy and sharp minded why not govt promote chess which does not take much infrastructure... it just need good training which could happen even under any tree... this game suits the temperament of Indians. it must be publicized... included in school syllabus and many domestic tournaments should be organized. this is the game that belongs to India and i bet it can take india to the peak of glory.... i wish if people like VA exploit the power of media to popularize this game.... check and mate

More than genius
by Arvind on May 12, 2010 11:17 PM  | Hide replies

I regularly follow the game moves of Anand's matches that I get from the local chess academy. Sometimes he makes unexpected move that makes ordinary knowledged people like me to look at him like a fool for a second. Only after spending few minutes I would understand oh that was a great move. Sometimes the moves of Anand shocks chess lovers... How can a human brain think like this... huh unbelievable. It takes few days for me sometimes to come out of such shocks. If there is a word better than genius, Anand should be called so. In T.Nagar Chess Academy, Chennai a place where Anand is all time hero, I am not a fan but mad of this guy because of his brain.
