WE WILL MISS YOU BOY......
by RKT on Jan 15, 2008 09:31 PM  | Hide replies

We will miss you Viren. We Indians must realize that what we were undisputed champions of Hockey. What we are trying to be in Cricket today we achieved much more in hockey. If Hockey gets just 50% of attention, money sponsors and love from we Indian, we can get much more laurels and recognition as Hockey super powers. After all with greats like Dhanraj, Turkey, Viren, GaganAjit, Prabhjot etc..etc..from the present generations (last 5 years) were never supported and welcomed like cricket. JUST RECALL ASIA GOLD MEDALISTS HAD TO SIT ON FLOORS AT MUMBAI AIRPORT AFTER 1998 WIN AND HOW DHANRAJ BRUSTED AND TURKEY WEPT- NO MEDIA, NO FANS. VIREN WAS ALSO A TEAM MEMBER. He scored 1 goal in 1998 final Asian games gold medal winning moment. India defeated pakistan 7-5, like this 1 goal Viren, 1 deepak Thakur, 1 Dhanraj, 1 goal Prabhjot and 3 by GananAjit - that famous revese flick of GaganAjit..many of us cann't forget. And Viren was just 19 or 20 years old then. Viren was also a part of some excellent Hockey moments of India like Asian Gold medal, Asia Championship, Commonwealth Silvers .....VIREN YOU TOOK A RIGHT DECISION. I FEEL ASHAMED AT TREATMENT OF HOCKEY PLAYERS WHO PLAY FOR COUNTRY NOT MONEY....JUST COMPARE YOUR TREATMENT WITH CRICKET T20 CHAMPIONS WELCOME IN MUMBAI....

Replace Gill with Viren
by Edwin DSouza on Jan 15, 2008 09:28 PM  | Hide replies

Probably Viren with his MBA and ground understanding of the sport in India could be the right man to replace Gill at the helm.

Not Possible with the type of clout the Politi tians & Beureucrats have on sports...Greats like Ashok Kumar, Mukesh Kumar, Shahid, Iqbal, Dhanraj could do nothing with so much ho halla....For that matter since Indian fans support cricket otherwise this Pawar, Shukla, Modi, Shah will kill cricket too

sad day for Indian hockey
by ...Anish... on Jan 15, 2008 09:26 PM

Utterly sad to see a talented midfielder like Viren quit the sport to pursue that dreadful 3 letter bullshit. Can't blame him though. Its not just a reflection of how hockey is run in this country and the state of the game currently but also speaks volumes about our society's treatment of non cricketing sportsmen. This is Viren's way of ensuring that in a cricket mad country he doesn't have to pawn off his medals to eke out a living when the game is done with him....
