Armchair Critics
by Go Modi on Jan 16, 2008 01:40 AM

How many of you idiots have done anything for this country. Think of that before you write comments.

Before you attack me, I served in the Indian army, and fought for my country. Don't you think I could have done what y'all did? How many of you think of our jawans when they die? How many of you congratulate our hockey players?

Idiots! Arrogant poufs!! Good for nothing except some Muslim bashing sitting in your chairs in the USA.

Great for India to have Viren
by live to be one on Jan 16, 2008 01:37 AM

Viren,I really proud of you that you are indian. I dont think any of the indian cricketer would have done this at peak of their career. It is your life and you have everyright to decide what you wnat to do.

These same ppl who want you to play now will not stand by you if india doesnt do well in olympics.
Sportsman with Education has lot of knowledge n respect. I wish you all the best....

Me & only me attitude!
by on Jan 16, 2008 01:10 AM  | Hide replies

From extra-ordinary indian, viren you are going to be ordinary!
I have done my MBA (IIM)& drawing a decent salary but i can tell you playing for your country is zillion times better than an MBA degree!
Getting an MBA at age 28 or 29 won't make much of a difference to u r career but if you give one more year to your team it can make a difference!
Its not a big deal getting into ISB for u, if you can do it now, u can do it next year also with u r hardwork.
anyways i think the otherside always looks greener!

Let the entire indian hockey team resign and do MBA.
Sports is about passion and not money!
And i can promise u viren is not going to starve! (fit hai, brain bhi hai, problem kya hai)
Don't crib about being poor, do something, Look at leander paes, he is making money! he is brave to choose a game like tennis, where are so bad historically
Viren played for 8 years, why not seven or six or five or four, if he is so scared abot future & now we have olympics and he is quitting just to do MBA from ISB. GOD HELP THIS COUNTRY!

I expected better reasoning from you for being an IIM graduate. Do you think people who have a career because they dont want to starve. Let me tell you, of most of us who write in rediff, none of us would starve for the rest of our lives. Millions of poor in India are living proof. They earn less in a year what a lot of us earn in a week yet most of them survive. It is about choosing a career path that gives you the best opportunity in life to do what you want to do.
If Vivek feels an MBA will give him that edge, it is wrong of others to sit in their cushy chairs and pontificate on whether he is right or wrong.. As far the pride in playing for the country goes, I feel it is a far too over-rated phrase. Even a software engineer in India feels the pride in contributing to the prosperity of the country by putting in the hard hours to earn foreign currency for RBI. So, do you mean to say the efforts of the software engineer are inferior compared to a sportsman playing for India.

is a hockey player getting the same recognition as a cricket player....Hockey fed is filled with morons...so its not a simple ME only attitude....its not easy for a player to keep on trying for Gmat and enter ISB...as he will loose 2 more years....and ISB does take huge fee...i feel its a good decision...hez almost at the end of his career

Well, for one reason...This PHL the players played for a month and they were paid differently according to their level..which is fair..but still max. was seventy thousand and min. was thirty thousand...this I am telling of the winners and second place team...others I have not yet asked. Each team played about seven games atleast...so the junior players got about three thousand for a game, for coming second in the pool table.
Hockey is tough, don't compare it with cricket...with all due respect to the cricket players...but they are over paid..!! Play cricket for 8 years and you don%u2019t need to work for the rest of your life%u2026play hockey for 8 years and if you are as smart as Viren%u2026you take a break and go and do M.B.A.
It is not that they just paly a single game of 70 mins. The stamina required is phenomenal just running for 70 mins. is not hard..many can do that..but sprinting up and down the field, at times bent and dribbling is tough..I have done it I know..!

Don't day dream that hockey will get its due reorganization in India, as long as people are mad behind the bunch of losers "our cricket heroes". India ranked 8 th or 9th among the more then 100 hockey playing nations, but our cricket team also ranks the same among 12 cricket playing nations. In our country other sports will become popular only when pople don't treat cricket as a religion, because cricket is a waste of time since all other sports will be completed in maximum 2 hours, cricket starches for hours

common u get paid for working 8 hrs a day u work less than that and u wont be paid ..that holds good for every game too..in cricket we work for 8 hrs for 5 days...just like any other profession...and look at the game u r talking abt..hardly more than an hour..and still cribbing..we stand in the sun for hrs at a stretch and we throw the balls from here to there ..no other games this much stamina...its the most energy sapping game in the whole sporting fratenity after chess and balls on the board.....

yeah u r right..why dont they bring atleast one more world cup.. look at cricket we have the richest sports body in the entire world..even thought football is the worlds loving game BCCI makes the most through the little know cricket thats the power of cricket...cricket should be given the national games status and it should be made mandatory for every one to play it..We have the cricket god in our team the rocks the tigers the ..they have won so many w**** cups...that is the reason they are given the renumeration...after hard practise only people are paid that much..u hockey guys have to make movies..but we have to work hard in the sun..stand 8hrs i think at a go... we work like any other work..we wrk for 5 working days...wat abt ur filthy game..just for 70 mints u have to play and u cant win a single world cup ...dont rest on ur past laurels though u won 8 i think olympic and some few more than 4 world cups....so come on stop crying and start playing...

Good luck Viren
by nitin bhat on Jan 16, 2008 12:02 AM

First of all, I want to wish Viren good luck for his MBA.
I have Viren play and I am disappointed to see IHF do nothing much to keep players of Viren calibre. IHF ruined Dhanraj's career as well. I hope IHF can learn something from BCCI and make playing professional hockey a top career in sports in India.

Wise decision..
by Ash M on Jan 15, 2008 11:24 PM

Viren is indeed a cultured, sincere fellow. I have met him a few times and found him to be a very gentle person. Studies are important too and it is good that he has opted for studies after giving a good time of his life to hockey. I wish him best of luck for his future.

Dung Dung saab was in that state at one time, but as I know now, he has been helped by SAI and is much better off now.

But yes the state of hockey is sad to see...after winning the Asia Cup the team was invited for high tea with the President..and they went there by autorickshaws on the other hand the cricket team came in their super luxry a/c bus.

Gill sir is not that bad a person, he is a good Genral, if he could do a Herculean job of wiping out terrorism he can any day do good for hockey. This Asia cup he had anounced a lowly sum of Rs 1000/- for each goal scored by the Indian team...and he had to take such falk from certain high people for his anouncement..please see from a neutral point.. Genrals in India are always bound by forces beyond their control. Hockey is in a bad state but he is not to be fully blamed.
I was sad for the game, but I am doing my bit to see it rise again( I make hockey sticks, although I don't sell in India too much I am trying to make sure players who want quality stuff get it).
It is good to see so mant msgs...please you all also do your bit to help hockey.
