Mockery of Hockey
by RKT on Jan 15, 2008 11:11 PM

In 2007 Asia cup championship, IHF came up with brilliant idea. They paid Rs. 1000 to team for each goal scored and deduct Rs. 2000 for each goal conceeded. In the end Indian Hockey players ended up with Rs. 55 each as incentive.

Wrong Decision Mate...
by ram alwars on Jan 15, 2008 11:11 PM  | Hide replies

Hi Viren Rasquinha, I respect your decision of putting your education first before that of sports, but i feel you have taken a hasty decision.

Remember an MBA from ISB does not make you any more intelligent but it makes you only marketable to the business world. You can get an ISB degree even next year but representing the country in olympics is something that not everyone can do.

If i were in your position i would have represented the country rather than going for an MBA degree... If you still have time think about it... The country can not afford to lose a talent like you. You will have done more to yourself and the country by winning the gold medal in olympics rather than a gold medal in MBA degree...

Why should he not do an MBA. What will playing hockey give him after 20 years. Look at Mr. Negi!!

i pooh pooh ur suggestion to viren...budy there are others who would fill his vacancy..representing india doesnt fill your tummy only few get away with stuff those who run around the field for 70 minutes bending down is a hard game.. after slogging ur spine for so hard its not worth the renumeration...now like my other fellow indians dont tell because of me india is not shining..be pragmatic...the pride associated is for a moment and u savour it at that time...after that life long of misery in terms of money...no offence meant for those who already took to games..but except for 15 cricketers in indian team, chess king, tennis queen...no one else gets to earn money in other sporting field.....

Chess King is a different league unlike Queen and 15 bunch of losers, because Vish is the Number one in his game and won Twice world championship and respected all around the world for his pro in chess, but god only knows what the Queen and the 15 bunch of losers has achieved.....

@ Rexberry...I watch hockey at K.D.S.Badu stadium at lucknow when ever I pass by stadium in evening. Those boys if given support and nurtured, only these Lucknow team has potentail to take on many teams in world. If supported in all India Orissa, Jahrkhand, Punjab and Maharashtra the Indian hockey team will be a force....but how to do it? who will do it? Gill (never)? Where are sponsors? Indian cricket crazy public will go towards hockey? many questions to be answered.

I have been a junior to Viren ay school at St. Stanislaus, Bandra, Mumbai and know him as a cultured, sincere and ambitious lad. Few know that even during those days, he excelled on the sports field, securing a rank at the SSC merit list whic is no mean achievement and also was the school captain at that time. It has been inspiring to say the least to hear about his accompishments. If one has followed his career closely, this decison was on the cards and I am happy that he has achieved what he had set out to do as in an article 6 months back in the TOI he had indicated that he was looking forward to an MBA. he sets his goals and excels in them with humility that is his trademark !

All the best !!
by milind gade on Jan 15, 2008 10:49 PM

The grace with which a person relinquishes his position when people ask why instead of why not says a lot about the persons character. I wish the IHF chief who is "ruinning" the hockey federation learns this lesson from young Viren. A few characters in Indian cricket team and BCCI shoul d also learn from Viren's decision. All the best Viren, you made Mumbaikars feel proud when you played for the country.

Look at the statement at Wikipedia
by RKT on Jan 15, 2008 10:48 PM

Major Dhyan Chand Singh (August 29, 1905 %u2013 December 3, 1979) was a former Indian hockey player and is regarded as the greatest ever hockey player of all times. He was part of the Gold winning Indian team in three Olympic Games (1928 Amsterdam , 1932 Los Angeles, 1936 Berlin). He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian honour, in 1956. He got the title "Chand" or (moon) from his first coach, Pankaj Gupta, who had predicted that he would one day shine like a chand or moon. Dhyan Chand was affectionately called Dadda. Even today Dhyan Chand is to hockey what Bradman is to cricket, Mohammed Ali to boxing and Pele to football %u2014 the unchallenged masters of their sport and the only Indian sportsperson who can lay claim to such an honour.

Still there are many who feels crickers are only loved. We Indians must realize that whole world still want to play like Indian greats...

Pathetic life

If you score six sixers in an over you will receiver Rs. 1 crore. You need not score more than 5 in an innings thereafter. You will still receive Rs. 60 lakhs a year in contract. This is in Indian Cricket. In Indian Hocky. You score a hattrick goals and bring medal to India. There will be 50 people to receive you in airport. Thereafter travel in Indian Railway to your home town to think about tomorrow how to carry on your life. Wah! Mera Bharat....

Well said Raam. It is frustrating to see other sports treated like stepchildren as compared to cricket. BTW Yuvraj Singh is busy dating Deepika in Australia while his team is loosing matches byt he dozen. This dimwit has been told that he is the future captain and that has affected his brain.

Sensible Decision
by Suresh on Jan 15, 2008 10:35 PM  | Hide replies

IHF's loss is ISB's gain. This is the most sensible decision that Rasquinha has taken in his life. If he had stuck on to hockey he would have ended up as a coach for the Indian Oil team. Now he can go places with a brand name like ISB on his resume.

There was a great olympian, TWICE GOLD MEDALIST belonging to Jharkhand...the name is DUNG DUNG..a tribal...He is running a Trolley tea stall at Ranchi with two gold medals hanging on his Trolley. He sold the medals for his treatment. No body to help DUNG DUNG..Rajiv is lucky to get a job in railways as TTE and he is not a COOLIE. This is condition of hockey players in India.
