Just watch his interview on BBC and it will bring tears to your eyes.

He is a true hero. A true Son of the soil.

Hope he gets a Gold this time. His village is quietly churning out India's future Boxing heroes.

Grass roots people like him make all the difference.

If I was standing between Sachin Tendulkar and Vijender Kumar holding each person's hand and was asked to declare a winner.

HANDS DOWN IT WOULD BE VIJENDER KUMAR !

You mis-interpreted my intent.
All I was stating was Sachin has all the spot light and takes it for granted where as Vijender Kumar has none of it.

FOR ONCE, LET THE LIGHT SHINE ON THIS TRUE OLYMPIC HERO.

WHILE IT IS TRUE SPORTS, LIKE WORK, SHOULD SERVE TO UNITE ALL INDIANS.

While Bindra is an example of a sportsman working outside the system to bring glory to himself and the nation , Sushil Kumar and Vijender Kumar are example of sportsmen working with the system. True our system does not offer the kind of facilities, training and encouragement that top sportsperson need to perform at the highest level. But these medalists did not have much of a choice given that they come from less privileged backgrounds. They have achieved something with pure grit and determination and working with whatever they were provided with. Their efforts need to be rewarded in full. At the same time a committment should be made to see to it that these sportsperson are given the best of everything so that we have more of Sushils and Vijenders and Bindras and Sainas and Akhils in our midst.

great where in this world raj thackery stated backing vijendra. did he spent last night at ur home? now u will say shivaji spirit came into beijing ring n helped vijendra. no one helped him. SAI helped him to get an inspector job and also with some award money after Arjuna award. He now have 2 storey house where he lives with his bus driver dad. Got it.

buddy, shazid. In india, every region people are saving their asses under regionalism. I was born and brought up in AP, . If you are not a telugu, these people would not let u come up easily. Everyone is doing that excepot so far we marathis did not do it. But looking at the pathetic state of marathis except for a notable few, everyone is poor and suffering.

When everyone sings the song of multiculturism and national unity, then it will look good. but its not fair that we marathis only should pay for this.

Think about it. I dont agree with Raj, but read and understand my statement. I faced telugu regionalism when I grew up and feel injustice. But i am slowly learning to live with it

Indo look at these comments of this guy nick name Raj Thackery then you will understand

This is a really good team. They have 80% local players and they achieved almost 99% result. Isnt that great. Just imagine what we can achieve in Mumbai if 80% of our jobs were also for locals. posted on On Apr 24, 2008 12:31 AM

All over India there r Indians who r making country proud it has nothing to do with Maratha, Tamil, Punjabi, Bihari, UP. Got it. Read the BBC Interview on Vijendra. Those Maratha glory is good to keep when we read India Independence History. Now it is India. Got it.

The title of this article is incorrect. He's made it to the semis... thats the last 4 . So, he's not assured of a medal yet.

my bad...
apparently both semi final losers get a bronze. They should have mentioned this in the article.

Way to go Vijender..

Here is why !
In boxing, if one of the semi-final losers is knocked out, he can't box
again for a certain time period as a safety precaution, and it
wouldn't be fair to take away his chance at a bronze medal just
because his semi-final opponent was so much better than the others,in all other
cases the losing semifinalists both get a bronze in olympics and other games because ,
there are no qualifying events before the main events .

Olympics should add these sports
by nitin misra on Aug 21, 2008 12:40 AM  | Hide replies

Congrats to Vijender and Sushil for making India proud and atleast putting India into a respectable position in the Tally (however its not a very good position as compared to China and US but in terms of India's record it is).
One point I want to raise is Olypics should add Kabbadi, Chess and Cricket. These sports will add few more medals to Indian kitty.
I remember that beach Volleyball was introduced when it was not so popular except in western countries. What u all say!!!

Only an id10t will compare chess with snakes and ladders.

When they have sync-swimming, trampoline and pommel-horse Chess is not a bad proposition but chess is not a spectator sport so broadcasters who buy the olympic rights cant make much money out of it!

And we cant compare to China and US because they spend millions of $s for each sport.
India has done well for its low money spent to medals won ratio.

yeah thts a gud idea. but snakes n ladder is more of a luck game. so i think it wont make to the list. but kabbadi has been there in Asian Games. Cricket 20-20 format is also perfect for olympics. And chess is also a very popular game all over the world. So all these sports can be included.

What a pitty when Indian sports Minister asking Gopichand - "Who are you" Shame on them who made them responsible for that post.

Indian Boxers
by Guest on Aug 21, 2008 12:15 AM

Indian boxers have always done well in the international sports events thanks to their Coach , Gurubachan Singh .. Few years ago he trained well to some Satish Kumar from Punjab ( i am not sure abt his name ).. he won many medals in various international sports events .. but later on when that Guy had seen that his contribution to the indian sports arena is neglected by almost everyone (media , Govt , ppls ) , HE LEFT THIS COUNTRY and now he is either in US or AUSTRALIA .. THAT time Our NATIONAL BOXING COACH was very upset because he was the one who brings all these unknown Sportsmen from small towns like BHIWANI .. That time there was a small note published in TOI about that run-away BOXER .. He(GURU BACHAN SINGH) told that news reporter that even though his student get attracted to the US dollars and ran away , he wanted to assure everyone that he would like to come up with many more new STUDENTs who will definitely win Olympics medals .......... Today after Viju's victory , he must be feeling proud of himself and THAT run-away Boxer must be cursing himself .... WELL DONE GURU BACHAN SINGH (sorry , even i dont know your name .. i beg your pardon for my little knowledge about your name , thanx to our indian media who hardly gives any coverage to non-cricket sports personalities ) ... Never the less Well DONE all the BOXERs and Quarter FINALISTS ... in the next Olympics , we will convert our Bronze medals into Gold . this Olympics has brought only 3 Medals but everyone c
