Cricket in Olympics
by Sharath on Aug 19, 2008 10:37 AM  | Hide replies

The fact is that cricket was played in the 1900 games at Paris and then dropped.Like said before Cricket is a game played by a minority of the British Commonwealth countries. As if enough has not been said about our cricketers,do we need the Olympics also to praise our cricketers. We can't expect to have a sport in the Olympics just because it is famous in our country. The maximum possibility is that only when India hosts the games which doesn't seem realistic.Leave everything alone, once cricket becomes an olympic sport,i dont think we can sustain at the top level because countries like Germany,Holland,China and major part of Europe would start training at a level which we cant imagine. So it doesnt work either ways!

I dont understand why the Indians are so crazy about this cricket. We are lazy people, dont want a quick result and follow this in life also.People shamelessly sit infrom TV to spend their valuable time and later blame Government for all their woes.Pls dont include this game in Olympic. The countries playing base ball promote all game equavally and just watch the Olympic medal list and see where are we with 125 crores useless heads.

can u please tell which 100 countries play baseball.

i did a google search . found only 25 odd teams.

16 took part in qualifying .
8 qualified for olympics.

so why not have a qualifying for cricket too ?let the top teams qualify , whichever they are .

this is what i found on wiki search

The International Cricket Coucil has over 101 members or countries.

There are 10 full members who are qualified to play test cricket. These are
England
South Africa
India
Pakistan
West Indies
New Zealand
Austrailia
Bangladesh
Zimbabwe

Popularity

The majority of baseball's popularity resides in East Asia and the Americas, although in South America its popularity is mainly limited to the northern portion of the continent. Baseball is among the most popular sports in Canada, Colombia, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands Antilles, Nicaragua, Panama, Puerto Rico, South Korea, Taiwan, the United States and Venezuela.

Baseball's largest national market is the United States, where it is currently the second most popular sport, behind American football. Baseball was long the most popular sport in the country, and since the 19th century, it has been popularly referred to as the "national pastime." In addition, Major League Baseball has been given a unique monopoly status by the Supreme Court of the United States. This popularity continues with Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig commenting that baseball is currently more popular now than it has ever been.

Worldwide, baseball is estimated to be being the seventh most popular sport, behind Association football (soccer), cricket, field hockey, tennis, volleyball and table tennis.

This is wickipedia search on baseball.
its seventh popular BEHIND CRICKET .

do u want a link or will u search urself???

Baseball has the backing of western countries which cricket doesn't have. The other thing is that we are not ruling in cricket like the Americans do in Basketball or Baseball. Why do you go that far....Australia has cricket as its national game and yet they don't crave for cricket in the olympics.Cricket is not as intense as baseball even in the 20-20 format, the
format cannot simply fit in the olympics.Even if all this is done, there is no guarentee that we will win, once it is an olympic sport teams like Germany,China,etc....would start training at a level which we cannot even imagine. So does'nt work

Britain or England invented cricket for standing in the sunshine all day in their cold climate and to develop a tan.Hence it was not taken seriously worthy of much attention,to be include in Olympics.Baseball is an action-packed game requiring great physical prowess like football. Both baseball and cricket originated in the west whereas football, the world's most popular game is believed to have its origins in Asia.

cricket is not popular all over the world. It is played by less than ten countries(not a single major country or superpower).ICC tried to popularise it,but failed.People around the world consider it as a game like golf, passive and non-vigorous.Golf is not included in Olympics though it is played by more countries than cricket. This is the stark, sour truth. When cricket is patronised by more number of countries(at least 30),then it can be considered to be included in Olympics. This seems improbable at present.Football and hockey are played by a large no. of countries. This is your answer,Mr.Jesus Christ!

I didnt get what u meant by major countries and superpowers, if you are talking about USA. none of the popular games around the world is popular here. Whatever is called football, is called soccer in US, and its no way popular here, and if you say hockey , is it ice hockey. so if you are taking popularity as a priority, then u cannot include any games, even soccer which is probably the most popular sport is not so popular other than in europe and latin america. How many percentage of kids play soccer in India, and how many kids take swimming and gymnastics as a sport from which most of the olympic medals are won

ice hockey is a variation of hockey.soccer is almost like football.cricket is similar to golf.superpowers are china, russia, usa, france and britain(permanent members of u.n).Britain or England invented cricket for standing in the sunshine all day in their cold climate and to develop a tan.But football reigns supreme even there.

Cricket is a curse on Other Indian Sports
by Kamal on Aug 18, 2008 10:14 AM  | Hide replies

Though I'am an avid cricket follower, however, I do feel that cricket has hurt the most the other sports from nourishing. People in India are crazy about cricket, so much so that the other sports governing bodies have nothing to fear from public in whatever they do. They only become careful when a mega sports event like Aisan games/Olympics arrive. If people follow other sports diligently, it would help in clearing the mess and force the government to invest in sports seriously, and that would help these sports to come to international level.

Obsession with one sport is really bad!

Who is bothered whether you are an avid follower or absurd follower!! Any sport is an entertainment and cricket provides the best form of entertainment. It deserves being in the olympics

Exclude Cricket

Its very tough to understand what Christie wants to say. According to his yardstick then games like football, hockey etc and also relay races should be excluded from the games also

70% of international cricket's earnings are from India.Only in India, cricket reigns supreme over other sports. In all the other cricket playing countries(less than 10 in no.)cricket is secondary to some other game.Except Indians, noone else thinks cricket deserves much attention.Australia is dominating cricket decisively since last twenty years, winning the cricket world cup 3 times showing the biased nature of the game of cricket.Even with so few countries playing cricket,India could never dominate it consistently. So forget about India performing well even if cricket is introduced in Olympics.Australia has a national sports culture, which we do not have.Hence it is a prominent world sporting power not just in cricket, but in many other games.
