Anand's accomplishment
by Satyabrata Sarkar on Sep 30, 2007 06:09 PM

Chess is a mind game whenever you play it irrespective of the different defined stategies. We should be proud that an Indian has come out globally with flying colours. He is a national HERO.

dont celebrate too much
by Sameer Bhagwat on Sep 30, 2007 06:01 PM  | Hide replies

in india, we celebrate when players win. when they lose, people take funeral processions. russians have won so many chess cups. they dont celebrate by giving 1 crore rupees.

let us not make a big deal of this.

one year, everyone is winning cricket world cup, chess world cup and hockey cup etc. next year, they all finish last.

let this guy win at least 5 more titles and then let every one celebrate. i think this is the right attitude.

You have no idea what you are talking about.
Anand first made headlines as the 'lightning kid' Today he is often the oldest player in the tournament. Anand has been in the top 3 for more than 15 years now. He has won dozens of major touranaments (linares, Dortmund, etc) and won the official FIde World Champion in 2000 -- At the time he was not the best player in the world and there was a dispute on who the chess champion really was. Today there is no such dispute.
This championship is the highest point of an amazing career. We should celebrate it even if Anand never wins another chess game.

people like yuvraj have become great without doing anything much. what do you have to say to that? people should prove themselves first. next year, anand will finish last. at that time, do you plan to take a funeral procession? dont get carried away. it is because of foolish fans like you that sports gets spoiled. be a true fan and understand the nature of sports. there is always a winner and a loser. losers are not any less than winners

Don't talk rubbish. You don't seem to have the slightest clue of his consistency and past achievements. He is one of the four chess players across the globe (any time) whose ELO ratings are 2,800 . He is winning the World Championship for the second time now and was beaten in the finals a couple of times. Do you think these are mean achievements. He has won the Linares Rapid Chess championship 10 times - nobody has ever done that. Don't talk nonsense and for god's sake don't compare Anand and the bunch of cricketing jokers.

Anand has done wonderfully over the years. He deserves all appreciation and rewards. The one thing that is bothersome , however, is that on too many occasions, Anand lost inexplicably when we most expected him to win ; example, quartefinals of World Championship at Sanghinagar, Hyderabad to Gata Kamsky; and then a World Championship title matches with Karpov and Kasparov after brilliant initial runs. Yet, here is a real Indian World Champion , one of the few Indians who have dominated international sport. May his tribe increase.

ANANDS MENTAL TOUGHNESS ...
by abhimanyu on Sep 30, 2007 05:57 PM

Anands greatest asset is his mental toughness and resilience.

Even though he lacked the coaches, training and sponsors like the tough russians, americans and germans and britishers had, he still struck on his own with his own resources and defeated them all to become the world champion in 2000 and now again in 2007.

This is the stuff out of which true champions are made. The never say die spirit.

No need of looking behind, Forward. We want infinite energy, infinite zeal, infinite courage and infinite patience. Then only will great things be achieved.

See where regional idiocies get us to.

We should be proud of our region, but much prouder of our nation that is India.

The members of each state in India, especially the sages and saints and great leaders, has deeply influenced other states in India deeply and has made a permanent impact in them with their boundless love and wisdom.

There are millions of inter-state marriages among the states as well in India .

Hence let us be proud of India first , then of our regions later.

Unity is strength. Disunity is weakness and downfall.

Vande Mataram.

Kasparov is the greatest player ever in the history of chess. However Anand defeated him more than the other players.

Kasparov always loved playing against Anand , as he stated that if he could defeat Anand, then he is indeed the best in the world.

Anand had shocked Kasparov many times.

If Anand had the training and coaches and sponsorships that Kasparov had, I am sure he would have defeated Kasparov consistently and never would have suffered a defeat from him.

friends, dont get offended when some one asks a question. i was watching the india australia cricket match while this was happening. I heard some one say that anand didnt beat any major player and in fact he only had draws. what is the achievement in draws? for people who dont know chess, others should explain. i agree that anand deserves at least rs 50,000 or 1 lakh prize from govt. but karunanidhi is busy with hunger strike in TN. he wont give prize to anand.

Anand had defeated many players of many countries. And he had a few draws as well.

To say that Anand won because of draws shows that the person who said this is an utter fool and ignoramus and knows nothing about the game.

And Anand deserves at least 1 crore rupees, as he had defeated the best from america, russia, germany, britain, spain , ukraine, greece, hungary and other countries in order to become the world champion. This is not an ordinary feat, or even an extraordinary feat.

It is an unbelievable feat, especially considering that Anand had no coaches or training or resources as the players in these countries had.

Still he conquered them all and became the best of the best.

chess is boring
by Sameer Bhagwat on Sep 30, 2007 05:32 PM  | Hide replies

chess is such a boring game. even so, i think this is a great achievement. the govt should give at least 50thousand or 1 lakh prize for this at least. hockey players can be given more, maybe 2 or 3 lakhs. cricket is a more difficult game. they should get more.

at least the IAS officer from the sports ministry should receive anand at the airport. since he lives in spain, he might not be returning to india soon.

is it true that no major player took part this year, and that's why Anand won?

Chess is boring for those who lack brains and hence lose.

Only the smart ones prevail. The others lose.

Just like in real life where the smart ones get the big bucks and good jobs , while the idiots clean dishes and plates.

Anand has won many awards in foreign countries , in recognition of his chess talent.

The world championship title itself bagged him 350000 dollars, which is more than 1 crore rupees.

And he has bagged many , many more such titles.

He has also done sponsorships in foreign countries.

He is a millionaire in dollar terms.
