Olympics at Athens

It is a great opportunity for all the athlets from India. We need to strengthen the teams not buy providing a participation list. We shall have a meticulus methods to choose the courageous, rightuous and clean sports men and sports women. Only these personalities when given sufficient support and guidence can bring us medals.

We take several things granted. For example take the situation of coaches. When you can not watch the integrity of a coach, you can not expect a medal from the trainee.

India needs funds, and funds spent in the right way in the right path.

Hope 2008 will be good to see.

If we don't have indian sportsmen at the olympics, there won't be any body finishing last. Its time the government does some thing, with so much corruption rampant in the Indian Olympics sports body. How do you expect to compete with countries like china. Its simply waste of time and wast of the tax payers money if you don't get the system in order and remove all the corrupt officials.

Message to Indian Sports

Action Plan:

Drastic reduction in sports authorities and buracracy. Remove all non performing or train the trainers. The should

Identify sports where we have enough resources and talent.

Compare individual performance with world performance - Quality control.

Fix key and critical qualifying criteria in selecting the perticipant.

Evaluate medel winning capabilities.

Narrow down as critical as possible and forget quota system.

In case you do not observe any sportsperson do not send team. Take the lesson form China. If China is no. 1 in population they stood 2 in the world in medal tally. What is our target??????

We have the potential but we have definite problem channelising our resources.

Message from an Indian well wisher from Australia.

Why did India invent zero huh?
by cheez_m on Aug 30, 2004 08:21 AM

It makes me feel now why at all did India invent zero afterall? 75 contingent and one silver this is no better than zero. Bravo Rathod though! and shame on crook weightlifters. They should be thrown out of the team seriously. I still think we had a fair chance in Hockey, but all this infighting and too much ego took the whole team down. India should have a fair understanding now which sports can deliver medals (yeah hockey, shooting, archery atheletics are there) and start grooming players. Only time will tell how can we compete in future and at what level.

we can and we will

The 28th Olympics ended today and Olympics return to ASIA after a long time in 2008, the 28th olympics was India's best since 1980...So there is hope, our athletes ended in more finals than any games in the past two decades and this shows that there is hope, the lone medal we got was not from a known sport, no one expected a medal from trap shooting.

Our athletes have time and again conquered the centre stage and they have come out with medals at world championships in various sports in the last 4-5 years, shooting, athletics and tennis being the most succesful sports. In these games our arheers did commendable job when you see the infrastructure they get here to practice.

For beiging my hit list for Indian medals would be

1.Shooting

2.Athletics

3.Boxing(hey where the hell is dikho singh.....)

4.Tennis

i pray that we get a gold in Beijing.

Let the best atheletes win, and yes kudos to Brazilian Vanderlei DE LIMA for outstanding sportsman spirit in men's marathon. Thats what olympics is all about ,sportsmanship peace and progress.

Never mind sending only 1 person to olyimpics.
by Srinivas on Aug 30, 2004 07:49 AM  | Hide replies

One reason told was lack of facilities and poor India. See countries like Morocco, Keyna and other african countries. Even Iraq did well in soccer. What facilities and extra money do these countries have that they win medals.

Pick those events and send only those whose national record are nearly equalling world or olyimpic record. Never mind sending only 1 person to olyimpics. That is what we should learn from these countries.

Wholeheartedly agree. Send only those that are truly qualified. I have a similar question. How can a country like Iraq, in the middle of a war and such chaos, send a winning soccer team? What is the difference between them and our teams? I can make some guesses, but we really need to find out.

good article
by senthil on Aug 30, 2004 07:01 AM  | Hide replies

That was a good article, but our atheletes only get attention during the games. Why is our government not encouraging these people? It is really dissapointing to note that second populous country doesnt have good sportsman. China which rejoined olympics just 24 years ago is doing amazing hope our government realises that.

Lack of facilities and poor India is just another excuse. Look at countries like Cuba(9 Golds), Kenya etc. They are poorer than India and get far less facilities than Indians.

by G Mookerjee on Aug 30, 2004 06:41 AM

unless there is a consistent performance from any athlete they should not be sent for the Games.Somebody can achieve the qualification mark once by chance, that does not mean he is Olympic material. And after all these years, let us give it a break and concentrate on our own games like Guli Danda and Kho Kho.

How many of 70+ are really sports persons
by Mahesh on Aug 30, 2004 06:38 AM

70 + is really a big contingent.. I sincerely doubt if even 20% of this contingent are real sports persons, rest all I assume are some body to some body in Higher Political quarters who went to athens to enjoy a holiday. Nations pride is of no value to these silver spoon fed fellas. I feel sorry for all the real talented probable medal winners, who are left behind in the competition of recommendations.

Jai Hind..
