Pathetic Situation..Who's responsible?
by Siodude on Aug 30, 2004 12:53 PM

Our sportspersos were drubbed all ends out barring few. What else can one expect with under par facilities provided to them? With a shameful bunch of conscienceless incompetent whimsical superiors at the top, who have never strived to uplift the nations abundance of skill? No national infrastructure to rope in the performers in nascent stages, no benefits, no encouragement.I am surprised that India has these many atheletes who participated. Selection is random, and favoritism is present it seems.Stop chanting cheer slogans when these people represent our nation at the Games! There is every probability of underperformers being chosen by our "behind the scenes" superiors whose only aim is to make money by prostitution of their power.

SAF and commonwealth games should be banned
by sivadas on Aug 30, 2004 12:50 PM

First of all we should propose a ban on Commonwealth Games and SAF games, and afro-asian games in which we Indians perform well (where the competition is less and the standard of the athletes is poor) and the winners will become national heros (like Anjali bhagwat, etc). So, they will be content with winning in those games instead of bigger ones like asian games and olympics. Instead we should be exposed to a much stronger games, even if we fail there, perhaps they could improve their personal landmarks and improve slowly.

SO IN MY OPINION SAF GAMES AND COMMONWEALTH GAMES SHOULD BE BANNED OR AT LEAST INDIA SHOULD NOT PARTICIPATE IN THESE GAMES.

Performance of Indians in Athens 2004
by Raju Vishwanathan on Aug 30, 2004 12:37 PM

Optimistic view

It was overall a not so good performance by Indians except by Rathore and Anju bobby george.

Anju set up new national record in the process but failed to Russians. Sports minister should have a fresh look at the indian sportsperson.

If the performance at the Olympics has to improve we have to get the factories up n runnin. And rewarding a winner with 20 lacs or clerical post in the GOI is no goin 2 help either.Thats the saddest part.Indians r happy with a job and a job means security, nothing else will do or is neither required or aspired for.And sell themselves for a pittance, which is the root cause of corruption which makes dealing with even a petty officer a big pain and results in MNCs steerin clear o India.

Weve factories and camps which have honed the talents of Sachin,Azhar,Pace men,Paes etc. Then how do we expect miracles if we do not have factories for other sports.Im sure if a few Hulks from the film industry can set off a body building revolution a good attempt to start a Olympic winners factory will show results in Beijing and also reduce the no. of Diabetics who end up with it becos of lack o exercise n tension/stress filled life styles. We were very close.Ending up 4th n in the last 8 in many events. Its quite close. 001 to 010 in 4 years. May be May be 10 10 10 in another 4?

Only if we pick from all the 1 billion at school level.Give it a try MonMohun n Kalaam.

Olympics
by Prasanna Veeraraghavan on Aug 30, 2004 12:33 PM

The truth that I could gain out of this olympics is that the Indian Sports must be in for a good revamp and overhaul if at all we need to do something for the Beijing. Well, let us look to Beijing now. We can take a leaf out of China. They are organising lot of talent search and are looking to build an enormous talent that is to take on the world. Where are we? Our Government says they spend around 500 Crores each year but half of the money goes to paying salaries. All our Indian federations and associations are filled with people who are no way related to Sports. Is this the way we develop sports? We are not doing any justice the abundant talent available in us by ignoring them to run the development programmes. Worse is the Contingent that goes with the athletes to watch olympics. What on earth is happening? You send 75 athletes and 75 people to watch? If we are that rich to send a bandwagon for nothing why not we invest it in better facilities?

It is high time the Indina thinktank ( where are they ??? ) does a thinking. If a country with a population of 100 Million can't match it is not a problem of population but the AUTHORITIES. Won't they ever CHANGE???????

The Positive Part of the great Indian effort in the recently concluded Olympics is a Silver Medal. However, if we take China as a case study, they have over a period of couple of years/decades have improved to such an extent that they are just next to USA and have replaced Russia in the No.2 spot.

It is not that China follows rocket science. It is just that they have worked harder, smarter and better.

Atleast in 2008 or atleast in 2012 Indian Athletes should make a significant mark. A country of more than 1 Billion winning just a silver medal is not a great achievement.

Government and Corporates should take necessary steps to groom children to become world beaters. If we could produce some of the best Software professionals in the world, is it impossible to produce world class sportsmen. How long should India keep missing the Bus, when others flying in spacecraft. When we have best scientific brains from IIT/IISC and management brains from IIM, and all forms of spiritual Gurus, giving peace of mind Mantras, is it not possible to become a winning Nation?

Lets remember Swami Vivekananda, who was a Lion among Men and who created a great Impact in a Foreign land.

digusting performance
by sreekanth on Aug 30, 2004 12:16 PM

It is quite disappointing that a nation of 1 billion people has brought home just 1 silver medal. We now know where we stand in the world. It is a lesson to learn for we indians to headstart from now on atleast for the 2008 bejing olympics to keep our self esteem with our neighbour, when the olympics is gonna take place in their homeland.

An improved performance
by Neeraj Negi on Aug 30, 2004 12:15 PM

Indian performance in Athens olympics could easily be dubbed as its best ever. I have been following the games for past 24 years and its only this time around that lot of indian sportsmen came up with good performances. Never before had we got so many top 10 finishes - Anju; Leehesh; Rathore; 4 X 400 relay team; Abhinav; Sirur; Kunjarani; and Women Archery Team, they all did India proud. Though others may disagree - when had India performed better than this. It will take concerted efforts to jump into the league of USA, CHINA, JAPAN and Russia. This olympics gives us hope.

really bad performance
by Suhas on Aug 30, 2004 12:09 PM

It is true that this a really a shame for our country with such a big population, I am also confident that we can do far better, as we have capable persons in our country, only the the thing is that they should be given right means and training, further their selection should be fare too.

No coming to the point of PRABAL, it is better that person like him should not use caste and religion while writing any aricle on web/media. These type of things are the real cause of India being unsuccesful at many grounds. For Prabal that I am not Punjabi, I am Indian first..
