Oh really, it is no excellent, it is par from excellence because she is talking and favouring tamilnadu....and many tamilian would support her. Karnataka claims is correct, whether is political or non political it is secondary..
this problem arises whenever there is no rain water and cauvery water basin will not be sufficient to share with both the states. unfortunately, eventhough, there is solution incase of crises, water cannot be shared because of narrow mindedness of both state politicians only juduciary with its vast power can find amicable solution atleast temporarily for this year. and for next year pray for good rains in catchment areas
Every time such issues rises blame game started and politicians are accused at first instance. What these guys could do? They have no convincing answer for their livelihood because scientifically nothing was worked out and supreme court order felt compelling. Cauvery dispute is no way different any other water dispute, as these kind of problem arises in case of deficit only, the time period may be different for different cases influenced no doubt by the command area development. In surplus to normal years the extent of command area survives, whereas in deficit years competition for various users start. This is what is happening now and should be sorted out mutually. In water sharing specifically in country like India, one has to oblige the neighbor, by satisfying his/her thrust. Now for that head of both the state should have friendly relation as it was in the days of MGR and Ramakrishna Hegde. Just now that relationship is at it's lowest with corruption/legal outbreaks. Moreover they have no control from center being from different outfits and water being a state subject, center plays only advisory role in it. Most importantly there is no scientific plan available, on which competent authorities could give judgement and politicians can convince their people suffering from apprehensions out of the verdict. Technology has reached a level where nothing is impossible, however in water cases socio-economic values fluctuates so much and slowly leading to burst ultimately.

I can comment only on the first part of your view. You talk of helplessness of Politicians. What all we can expect Politicians to do is, when they have to vote for increase in heir Salaries & unaccounted perks, they will raise their hand instantaneously. If the issue is anything else, we better not expect any sensible answer from them, simply because most of them dont even know their Constituency and expecting answers on such issues is meaningless. One British MP commented "it is a surprise India goes on despite Government". It speaks more Volumes than the entire books in the Largest Library in the World.
Thank you rediff for this wonderful article which puts the Cauvery dispute in perspective. The Art of Living foundation has done some yeoman work in clearing the silt from rivers in Maharashtra. The best thing would be to bring the farmers from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu together and sort out this issue without bringing the political parties in picture. Cooperation and not confrontation should be the mantra for now and for the future. We owe it to our future generations to show them the right and righteous path, else it will be Armageddon. Else it will be Kaveree teeray karuna viloley.

Dear Iyer, it is not that we do not have perfect solutions for several problems in India. But the main problem is "there is no solution of any kind, let alone perfect, for Politicians not to interfere for every simple problem, to get mileage for their popularity/votes". If we can solve this problem, other problems will not arise at all (most likely) OR can be solved much easily.
