Debate on Euthanasia
by Story editor on Mar 08, 2011 12:17 AM

We should not forget that in a country like India Euthanasia can be seriously misused...for example people may get other people killed(old people) for property.

However like death is given for rarest of rare crimes, Euthanasia should be allowed for rarest of rare cases. Aruna's case is definitely one!

Mercy killing is required

Common, our's is country of billions and there are millions w/o food and how can we think of supporting a 'vegetable life' on bed for 30-40 years long. These medicines/costs could have been used to treat poor and needy.
Judiciary should be practical and logical..

I wish you fall ill tomorrow and become a vegetable. What will you prefer to have? A brain destroying virus or a road traffic accident? Or drowning, for a change?

Srinivas,

It is true that she should be allowed to die, but the way you have put your argument is very insensitive buddy.

None of us know what might happen to us, so let us be considerate and pragmatic.

I agree with Srinivas. does this woman have a fami1y? what do they want to do with her life? If not, the caregiver's recommendation should be upheld by SC

This useless Supreme Court has neither "seen" nor "understood" the plight of Aruna.

What a torture to a woman in a vegatative state? I do not know if the Judiciary acted prudent, but just imagine 37 LONG years. Is this the life?

Quality of life is more important than just a life, especially the vegetative. I do not think this judgement would go down well with any of the human beings on this world. India without a law on such cases is still an underdeveloped country. When they can make POTA, TADA, MCOCA in few months why they cant make a law for those whose quality of life is nothing sort of a hell?

I salute the countries who have laws on euthanasia. India is still lagging behind. Where are the Human Rights Commission by the way - Or are they only waiting for the terrorists to be called as Humans alone?

The rapist is out after serving 7 years in jail. He was also employed by AIIMS in New Delhi later. Why the hell do we not have capital punishment for rape? Please wake up at least now!!!

I fully support azmat's views. But when we look at the legality of euthanasia, the state of corruption at all levels in our country does not have 100 percent sureity on "incurable" state.

I dont think any life should depend on possible unethical elements. When so much sureity is required to hang a person, the same amount of sureity can be had via people where there is a high possibility of them having vested interests

Gutless Government

I do not understand why the relatives or people connected to Aruna are even bothering to appeal to the court for mercy killing, because these judges only go by the book and do not think about the physical state she is in and the suffering she is going through since last 37 years.

USELESS JUDICIARY

The judiciary would have re-acted only if someone from their family or corrupt netas family had to go through this ordeal.

For the common man, there is no hope.

If the Judiciary would use emotions in lieu of Law's, it would then be a "USELESS JUDICIARY". Don't get me wrong, I had my fingers crossed that the SC would grant Aruna a peaceful and honourable death. Let us not forget, the judiciary enforces the law and lives by the constitution of India. I feel for Aruna & her family (esp the KEM staff who are no less than family) but unless our politicians (makers of the Law) wake up and pass a bill which will become a law to allow unfortunates like Aruna to end their life with honour, our Honourable courts will have to regrettably follow the law and pass judgements like they have done. I am certain, they as individuals regret having to do so, but there you are.
