As for the arguments for or against UID, i think any system is as goodd or bad as ppl who run it, if the system is run with good intentions then system is beneficial else system is bad .. id'ing ppl , electronic money , electronic telecom and survillance capability which comes with it can be misused by anybody in power, is definitely misused ..

UID is an excellent idea to help poor.
by arnold on Feb 05, 2011 08:01 PM  | Hide replies

UID is an excellent idea to help poor.
UID once linked with bank accounts and property, vehicle registrations can filte out who is real poor and who is fake poor.
I know many fake poors who own lots of properties and get ration card ment for poor by bribing the officers.
These fake poors can really live with out taking benifits ment for poor and Once UID comes in to force these fake poors will be eliminated from BPL schemes and the real benifits will go to the needy people who are Living in Slums/jungles/tribals etc...

UID card must be used to transfer GOVT benifits directly in to the card by eliminating blood sucking middle men who are eating away estimated 90% of the benifits ment for poor(once rajiv gandhi agrred on this).

So, the greatest benifit is avoid greedy middlemen, filter out fake poors and HELP REAL POOR before more real poor becomes maoists etc....

THE NEXT STAGE SHOULD BE:
Link all financial defaults, crminal records, offences etc... so that cheaters could be eliminated from mis using the system again and again.

I think who talk against UID are really worried of thier true color will come out when this card comes in to foorce or they are worried their future planes of corruption will be gone!!!!

PLEASE SUPPORT UID AND SUPPORT POOR (THIS KIND OF IDEA NEVER TOOK SHAPE IN LAST 60 YEARS AND THE POOR ARE LEFT BEHIND).

GOOD BLESS INDIA, GOD BLESS UID.

Link the properties and income of all politicians to UID as minimum requirement for contesting elections or getting a job. Lets see whether UID project will go ahead.

when you link bankc accounts, bank deposits , vehicle registrations and properties registrations to UID the the system will tell even though the person is not working he owns lots of properties... So, he is not poor.
IF some bosy gets salary his job will be linked to UID, then he can't say I have no job etc...
Got the clarification?

UID should be scrapped
by Alamgir Aurangzeb on Feb 05, 2011 07:50 PM  | Hide replies

Dear sir

About 7 per cent of Indians belong to the upper and middle classes according to McKinsey Consulting. The remaining 93 per cent of Indians belong to the lower classes who are offline.

UID will be not effective in providing food, medicine, clothing and shelter to these lower classes. Instead, it will be used by credit card issuers to track location and movement of defaulters via GPS and harass them to suicides.

This project costs $1 billion. It is a waste of taxpayer money.

Rag picker will get a UID card and the benifits can be directly transfered in to the card and he can withdraw benifts from any ATM.

he dont have to beg/bribe greedy middle men.

All politicians should be made eligible if there assets and properties are associated with UID including jobs. Any misrepresentation should lose job or legislature post.

OK. Then what about Provident Fund, which uniquely identify you, should also be scrapped. What about Passport number, given to Indian citizens.. that also should be scrapped. Numbering people has nothing to do. This guy Gopalakrishna is a mad guy and doesnt even understand. In fact, UID card should be such that it identifies everyone at a every transaction level and should ensure that it tracks everyone. It is something similar to Social Security number in USA or Singpaore and it has its own benefits. It will go long way to fight against corruption, if it is implemented in right spirit. People who do not understand this will always criritize UID.

Nandan Nilekani.
by preeti shinde on Feb 05, 2011 06:49 PM  | Hide replies

The headline itself is third rate. Nandan Nilekani is just running the project entrusted with hinm by govt.
moreover this kind of numbering should not be any problem with law abiding citizens. Only the people with ill intentions will fear this.
Very good and essential project.
need to check the intentions of Gopal Krishna and his finances too. May be financed by CIA front organizations.

Junk argument preeti, what Gopal says has some water, look having all details with a centralised agency is a very bad thing, watch the movie enemy of the state(will smith) and you will know. When a centralized data base exists and foreign companies are given access to it its extremely dangerous,u probably work for infosys or something and are propping up nandan, matter of fact is that he is doing a really bad job of aadhar, from the privacy front

Saif - first the article is ridiculous...and then your thoughts ...there is no water in all the stupid arguments this guy is giving, unless he is an illegal bangladeshi or similar or wants to protect more like him

If sometimes there is some good development project happening in this country, why cant ppl like u support it
