Nonsense ! This is most comprehensive & mammooth effort by any country in the world to give some status to its citizens !
Only one doubt ! Will it have details about the SWISS BANK ACCOUNTS of our patriotic ministers, MPS, MLAs and party leaders from CONGRESS, COMMUNIST & BJP parties ???

Intellectuals are polished satans (or shaitans,as you like) twisting good things into demons and making ugly things palatable. this article is the same, which is really deplorable. Aadhar is perhaps a first serious effort by an Indian Government to instill some sense into our chaotic non-sensical world. even after 63 years of independence,we dont have fool proof database of citizens, our best till now is the mobile customers database!!! we dont know how many of our citizens are dying of which diseases, though most of the advanced and not so advanced (read Srilanka) have better healthcare data. before every elections we get a new voter i card--i have 3 till now,all with some or the other mistakes!!! Aadhar with its biometric techniques can help sort these duplicities out and hence should be whole heartedly supported. any suspiciousness by these widely read intellectuals can just marr the success ,already the minority community is suspicious of every good thing---stopped pulse polio programme in UP--doubting it will decrease their children's reproductive potential!! leading to surge and non eradication of Polio. also there are selfish interest peoples(read politicians) who want a part of immigrant population which can be moved at their will to increase their poll chances (see bangladeshi refugee problem in West Bengal).also we have the naxalite problems, which will certainly not want to get personally identified.hence the job is of astronomical proportions and we should support it

UID is dangerous. Its a double edged knife. It can be misused to exploit you. Remember we once had the Emergency in 1975-77 under Smt. Indira Gandhi and his son Sanjay Gandhi. Characters like Sanjay Gandhi would simply go through person details of a person, track him or her and then exploit you much like Hitler did with his men. UID is like phone tapping or a radio collar that tracks tigers on the prowl. However innocent the UID may look its a clear way to exploit the common man. After all its the common man and not the VIP who suffers. Remember Indian politicians, Bureaucrats, Police, Army all can behave like Saitan or Satan. As long as your personal information remains a secret you are the King, the moment others have access to the same you are a slave.

This govt is the most shameless govt in the history of India. I bet they keep some people to think of ideas to keep the public off their tails. Another useless stunt at the cost of public money. All these leaders want is some popularity and votes. They dont have any intention of providing goodwill or sense of practibility. Were the poor all starving when computers were not around in the world? It is all due to the mismanagement policies intentionally adopted by these leaders. Or, America is all free of crime and corruption because it has UID? And this Nilekani stupid thinks his computers can do everything to provide the poor their long awaited financial security in independent India. I think he should issue himself one first and it should be made mandatory to anyone who wishes to contest elections. Leave the people of India alone. They dont want any new experience from the the Indian administrative system and its methods. Just another farce in their political culture.

Hence, this talk of 'inclusivity' ... blah, blah, blah ...

What I guess, the more informations are available for UID the more companies will start marketing by sending offers on your mobile/email with the help of your assets, liabilities, hobbies, health, family related data.

Not possible if there is regulations. You choose Do not disturb and no one can call you. If they call, you're lucky. Can make a lot of money out of them for the mental stress caused by these callers. The agony and pain that you went through etc.

Actually the biggest problem for the current govt is ... the same Community is posing a national threat but at the same time ... this community is their Vote Bank ...

Hence, to distract people of this country ... this govt is trying to fool our brothers !!

Hope friends like Owaisi and others will take up with govt and stop the profiling of their Community.

Typical superficial journalistic bombast
by Ashok Rao on Oct 12, 2010 06:39 PM  | Hide replies

I once knew Nandan Nilekani in the days before he became an icon. I also know many of the people who are working on the technology for the UID.

Most of them are top notch IIT and IIM grads. A large number of them are working FREE, no salary no bonuses, only coverage of direct costs like travel etc.

By no stretch of the imagination can you say that they are motivated by anything except idealism. They are some of the smartest people India has produced, and I am 100% certain they have no intention to take away the rights of millions of Indians.

As people who work in technology, they (and I) understand the importance of accurate data. It is the first step in stabilizing a system. We already have two examples of the successful application of this basic concept of accurate data - the Election Commission and the Census. Both of them are models for the rest of the world.

It is sad to see Praful Bidwai, who for some time was a student of IIT Bombay before opting for his life's calling of journalism, should be so superficial in his analysis.

Don't be sad brother. There are so many anti-nationals. Just ignore them, that's what they deserve. you just concentrate on what you do to make the nation proud and take it forward.

Dear Ashok,

Whether all citizens should be identified with UID or not is the policy decision of the Govt of the day and not of those IIT/IIM grads who merely are helping the Govt execute its policy.

The criticism is driven towards that policy making than towards the policy executioners.

I guess you should have travelled outside India. If you are, you might know that in Singapore a similar UID is accorded to all its citizens and this UID is again linked to all his/her debit/credit cards. The Govt and law enforcing agencies know at all times where you are at a specified time. Doesnt an individual have a right of privacy?

Who is Govt by the way? Isnt just a set of people?

May be there are some safeguards, may be not.

It is the duty of the GOvt to let its citizens in no uncertain terms that these concerns were taken care of and STATE HOW THEY WERE TAKEN CARE OF.

Sadly, except mere denials till now, no clear and verifiable clarification from any authority concerned came so far!

AS Rousseu said-Man is born free, but he is in chains everywhere!

This article is a big hogwash. GOI can use UID information the way it wants. it all depends on the people who are at the helm of affairs. UID will bring a little visibility on the citizens of India. Praful Bidwai is an author who writes for India's neighboring country's media. You can't expect a positive article on a development project like UID.

Even the present ration systems can go wtih this id card where people can be issued coupons and they can purchase stuff when they like it at the stores they like rather than eat rotten stuff from ration shops which also sells good quality stuff in the black market. Some criminals cannot digest the end of Criminal mafias power.

Praful Bidwai
by PR S on Oct 12, 2010 06:37 PM

Praful Bidwai is a person who found fault with everything new the government does. Yes, UID will ensure increased surveillance. But so what? No law abiding citizen need to fear about gov surveillance. In fact, it is the necessity in our times of increasing techno savy terrorism. It is said that in US after the 9/11 the survelliance is so tight that every mosque has one or more police informants who are paid liberally. Thus US has high nos of preemptive arrests based on police-incited crime traps- That is, criminals are caught not when they actually commit a crime, but when they even deem of a crime- and this 'thinking' of crime ( mainly terrorism related) is usually incited by informants on police rolls. The result is very apparent. There is no 9/11 after 9/11. Technology is a very effective instrument for surveillance. For instance, majority of complicated crimes are solved by the increasing use of mobile-tracking. UID definitely will add yet another tool in the law-enforcers stock. It is only to be welcomed. If we want to live peacefully in these times, you need to allow some degree of goverment survelliance to our personal terrain. It is not only desirable, but absolutely necessary. Let Praful Bidwai go to hell!
