Welcome
UID is dangerous
by Welcome on Oct 12, 2010 09:04 PM  | Hide replies

The issue is not about honesty, rather it's about stupidity. The decision taken now will effect the future generations for ever. People should think and discuss more openly instead of jumping to a conclusion just because they like a perticular political party or a person associated with the project. If one looks around carefully, there is no political party that opposes this project. They are all united or soldout all together to some vested interests.

There is no govt. in this world that needs a database of DNA, language, religion, caste, etc of every citizen. No government should micromanage individual person, if it does then it's not a democracy anymore. In a democracy govt. should not decide winners and losers. BTW, no one should bet on democracy to stay for ever, it's relatively a new experiment in the human history.

Just imagine what happens if the country goes into an emergency. No government should be given an opportunity to attempt an ethnic clensing. Just imagine what might be the fate of Hindu pandits if this database exists with the J&K govt. Imagine what can happen of if a hardcore MNS comes into power in MH, or what can happen if a hardcode dravedian movement takes over in TN.

Once again this is not about honesty. Also, this is not a law to revoke back.

only anti-nationals will oppose UID
by bala sreenivasan on Oct 12, 2010 08:57 PM  | Hide replies

The trouble in this country is that in the name of debate, every new initiative will be scuttled. The reasons offered are irritatingly the same every time- poverty, civil liberties, farmer suicides, bread and butter issues or possible misuse of a new regulation.
Literally every act in the statute book can be and is being misused. Our Leftist intellectuals will sacrifice sovereignty for their abiding love for freedom. They will fight tooth and nail until all laws aimed at the nation's security are attenuated. Only criminals and terrorists will opposed the UID

Funny, this is same argument used by dictators who in the name of sovereignty has made people slaves in their own countries - be in Generals of Burma, North Korea or Pakistan military.

You buffons will blow Govt's horn and call anyone who questions Congress govt as criminals. You will understand the taste of freedom and democracy only after you lose it to the Govt. You cry & kick later but it will be long gone.

UID for Bangladeshis on a priority basis
by Rana Pratap on Oct 12, 2010 08:42 PM  | Hide replies

Notice - If you are a resident of West Bengal or any of India's northeastern states, who has just entered India illegally from Bangladesh (or Pakistan), please contact your friendly neighborhood Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) to get your UID card even earlier than Indian citizens. This will help you expedite the formalities to get Indian government assistance to your newly "Indian" family at Indian taxpayers' expense... Jai Ho !!

Rubbish
by bala sreenivasan on Oct 12, 2010 08:22 PM  | Hide replies

a typical obscurantist prattle that Leftists have specialized in. This is exactly what the anti-national forces said when Rajiv-Pitroda duo spoke of computers in the mid 80s and today we see Yechuris and Karats going around with the laptops slung across their shoulders. Only one word can sum it up-Rubbish

Don't be too cocky. Even one who questions real reason or benefits of a project or its cost-benefit analysis is not anti-technology, anti-development and so on.

In Democracy, anyone have the right to challenge the Govt and it is Govt's responsibility to respond to the people. This issue is being raised with proper intentions. We should have thorough debate on this before finalizing such huge plan. Don't kill the debate and discussion which are the core of democracy.

I have as much faith in and respect for democracy as you have. But my point is in the name of debate and discussion, one cannot sabotage new initiatives backed by intellectual gymnastics which the Left is good at. Possible misuse of a law cannot be cited for not having one at all. virtually everything in the Cr.PC can be misused. We killed TADA and POTA purely on perceived apprehensions of a few Leftists and terrorist-friendly intellectuals who subverted democracy- ironically exploitng provisions in democracy. If they have the right to do it, I also have the right to point out the mischievous intent behind their objections. Tell me who is cocky now!

Why against this Article????
by Ananthram Sundarababu on Oct 12, 2010 07:13 PM  | Hide replies

I read posts boycotting the Author. Everyone thinks he is against the UID, but not actually so. He is against the loss of privacy through UID, which is actually correct.

Imagine corrupt politicians and corrupt police accessing your wealth and bank balances and plan to extort you? UID will NOT ELIMINATE corruption. How safe is your information in the UID Database is the question raised by the author. He is not against Nandan, at all.

PoC (Proof of Concept) is a must and if it had not been done, then this project is a failed one already.

For example, the data entry operator who will enter the details will make a lot of spelling mistakes and suddenly, you will find yourself not being an Indian Citizen at all. I found this in the Election ID Cards. 90% of the card holders will have their names skewered. If you find your name with a wrong spelling in the UID, and if you want to change it, the Govt will ask you to "Request for name change", which is not the case at all, because your name was only mistyped and you haven't requested for a change at all. They will take bribes for that one too.

With the current nature of the Govt Employees and Politicians, the UID will more expose you than protect any one. If it is implemented and used in Spirit, this is very good. With the current corrupt people everywhere, you can expect a goon or thug at your doorstep demanding money or property the day your details are in the database.

UID is dangerous. Its a double edged knife. It can be misused to exploit you. Remember we once had the Emergency in 1975-77 under Smt. Indira Gandhi and his son Sanjay Gandhi. Characters like Sanjay Gandhi would simply go through person details of a person, track him or her and then exploit you much like Hitler did with his men. UID is like phone tapping or a radio collar that tracks tigers on the prowl. However innocent the UID may look its a clear way to exploit the common man. After all its the common man and not the VIP who suffers.

Many people in the forum has highlighted, that honest people do not worry. But, factually, only these will be the ones who will worry, as they will be exploited by "ALL" forces.

Fact is it is not honest bs dis-honest people's worry. It is poor vs rich people as poor are only ones who HAVE to worry. Main force behind corruption is ignorance of lack of information/knowledge of poor woman/man who approches govt office. Beuracrats abuse their lack of knowledge to benefit themselves. this will be the case with UID. Anyone can be threatened with eliminating their records in UID database and will lose all their rights.
It makes beuracrats mighty powerful against common man.

So, it needs proper planning and checks & balance before being bulldowzed. UID doesn't just needs a corporate CEO, it needs people with social thinking who can cover the bases for the poor people.

Fear the UID!
by Venkatesa Prabhu on Oct 12, 2010 07:12 PM

This article by Praful Bidwai is CERTAINLY NOT ALARMIST! But probably a bit too late. Do pls realize the number of calls you get on your mobile asking for credit cards, personal loans etc ... not to talk of spam mail deliered at your doorstep (and NOT to your computer). All transactions including bank and credit card are already tracked by GOI agencies ... and DO NOT FORGET THE BIG BROTHER USA who sees all things happening all over the world 24x7 and misses nothing in REAL TIME, thanks to his satellites. I also believe that the guys working on this project like nandan nilekani are inspired by idealism ... as was Sam Pitroda. While it may have its deficiencies and the monster that any government in power is will most likely misuse it, there is no escaping such technology advancements. It is simply a matter of time.
