fire in the building run run run
by satya saka on Feb 24, 2010 01:12 PM

It has been a common excuse for most of the accidents. Short circuit. High rise buildings are the fashion of the day with most of them violating all rules and regulations. this is not to blame the builder alone but also the govt which has a short sight about plans but knows how to take mamools.Buildings are without annual maintenance which leave the users high and dry. Its also horrible to note that the fire dept did not respond to the call immediately. India needs to grow not just in quantity but in quality.

Fire in Multi storied bldg
by Hebbar R on Feb 24, 2010 12:59 PM

Reports in Newspapers this morning indicate that the building was not planned well for this kind of a hazard. The issue is how is it that such building existed? How did the civic authorities keep quite and allow such an accident to take place?

Now the Fire Dept says that they prefer annual approvals. This will then be another way of making money for self and the dept.

We should go back to villlages

India is not the right place to ape Western style development. Roads without traffic laws, buildings without codes or fire drills, products without regulation or consumer rights, media without any control. We are destroying ourselves by trying to ape the West at a time when the West itself is realizing the damage their way of life and corporates have caused to the environment and their social life. Let us save our land when we still have some time.

blame the system
by vox populi on Feb 24, 2010 12:16 PM

violations of building laws is rampant and goes on with impunity-any adherence to rules and regulations can be swept aside by simply bribing a few officials--the govt will pretend to order enquiry etc-put the report on a backburner and life will go on till another tragedy strikes.
My condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones in this needless tragedy.

Negligence killed 9
by ajeeth Kumar on Feb 24, 2010 11:11 AM  | Hide replies

The news iscompletely wrong. How will all 9 persons die falling from 8 storeyed bldg. Either all of them have fallen simultaneously. Otherwise this is not possible. The news is fake and the Govt officials want to close this issue from further decay. Check for the fire rescue operations in US,UK. They have choppers who will lift the survivors and save them. Even they save the pets trapped inside. If we collect all the money from temples, churches and Mosques on a daily basis we can run a second Govt in this country with good infrastructure for public.

Firstly, condolences on the tragedy and the lives lost. This is sickening to read, Rex. Our emergency services are woefully inadequate. Many lives can be saved if these guys react instantly. Also, police should cordon off the area and not allow public to block access to sevice vehicles. I am very sad about this situation, also having heard that my brother's friend lost his wife in this fire. The lift she was in got locked and filled with smoke. Are Indian cities geared for multi-storey buildings and the emergency services necessary? Are the building security and maintenance staff for such emergencies?? What is it was a terror attack? Many questions but no answers.
